Piano Sonata No 1, opus 6

Digital copies were provided by John Simon as part of the John Simon collection held in DOMUS in the Stellenbosch University Music Library.Piano Sonata No 1 (op.6) (12’47’’), Sonata in F sharp major, written 1965-66, was initially a through-composed piece, but later reworked into its present four-movement/four-section form. The first section or movement begins with a musical introduction. The highly rhythmical first theme, which follows, is marked ‘jazzistico’. The second theme, probably the work’s most significant idea, is marked ‘religioso’. After the exposition of these ideas, an introspective development section, which has the character of a fantasy, dominates the remainder of the movement. The boisterous second section, marked ‘scherzando’, is derived from the ‘jazzistico’ theme. The second half of the movement consists of a lyrical exploration of the ‘religioso’ theme, acting as a trio. The third section, marked ‘lento’, sees the ‘religioso’ idea transformed into a yearning meditation which extends into the upper reaches of the piano. Towards the end of the movement the jazzistico theme is alluded to, so linking the lento to the ‘finale’. The main idea of the finale is marked ‘seducente’ (seductively). The second theme, ‘un poco agitato’, is an expansion of a brief figure heard in the sonata’s first movement (bar 109). These themes are followed by the reintroduction of the ‘jazzistico’ theme in its original form as well as the ‘religioso’ idea, which provide the sonata with a sense of finality. The closing pages see a bravura mood taking hold, with the religioso theme becoming fast and jazzy. This religioso theme started life as a choral setting of the ‘Nunc Dimittis’, which the composer wrote while studying for his economics honours degree at the University of Cape Town in 1965. The ‘jazzistico’ theme owes something to sixties ‘Swinging London’ where the sonata was completed the following year. Piano Sonata No 1 is tonal throughout, with melody and pianistic colour its most noteworthy features.Score. 'Completed London 1966. Extant score July 1975, Walton on Thames.
