Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Multilingualism constitutes an urgent objective for education, which needs to involve teachers and researchers at all levels if we are to promote effective and autonomous learning in the young. Like Daniela Zorzi, the author considers herself a socially engaged linguist, and in memory of her friend’s work, offers a reflection on the key roles of languages and cultures and of multilingualism for professional success and social welfare today
Megaturbidite deposits in the Holocene basin fill of Lake Como (Southern Alps, Italy)
For the first time, limnogeological investigations have been carried out in Lake Como, the deepest lake of the Alps, combining a bathymetric survey (multibeam Simrad 3000) with a high-resolution seismic reflection study (single-channel 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiler) and a coring campaign (gravity corer). This data set enables detailed characterization of the sedimentary subsurface in the western branch of the lake, the Como branch, which has a typical fjord morphology. This paper focuses on the deepest part of the Como branch (Argegno basin), in which up to 3.5-m-thick turbidite deposits are identified. The basin fill of the Como branch is characterized by well-layered draping and onlapping pelagic sediments that are locally affected by creeping and that are intercalated with mass-wasting deposits, in particular with two large debris-flow deposits evolving into megaturbidites in the deepest part of the basin. The multibeam data together with the acoustic-facies distributions and the volumes of these two major sedimentary deposits MT1 ( 3 × 106 m3) and MT2 ( 10.5 × 106 m3) indicate that they resulted from large slides at the northern tip of the Como branch along the steep slopes of a sub-lacustrine plateau. The estimated ages of these events, around the mid-12th (MT1) and early 6th (MT2) centuries, are extrapolated from mean sedimentation rates based on radiocarbon (14C) and radionuclide (137Cs) analyses from short cores in the Argegno basin. Possible trigger mechanisms leading to these catastrophic events in the Como branch include a combination of steep-slope overloading, with significant lake-level fluctuations related to Holocene climate change and/or earthquake shaking. The tentative age assignment places the age of both major mass movements near two other events: MT1 near the occurrence of a major earthquake in the Po Plain in 1222 AD (Intensity IX MCS, macroseismically derived magnitude 6.2) and MT2 near a megaturbidite triggered in 700 AD in a proglacial lake in southeastern Switzerland [Blass, A., Anselmetti, F., Grosjean, M., Sturm, M., 2005. The last 1300 years of environmental history in the sediments of Lake Sils (Engadine, Switzerland). Eclogae Geologicae Helvetiae 98, 319–332]. Since dangerous, tsunami-like waves (seiches) can be generated by large sub-aqueous landslides leading to such megaturbidites in this fjord-like basin, future studies are required: 1) to constrain the age of these catastrophic events; 2) to document the stabilities of the steep slopes in the Como branch, 3) to assess the expected frequency of such catastrophic events and 4) to model the propagation of large waves in the Como branch and their potential damage along the highly populated lake shore
Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções
This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance
in terms of environmental planning and management.AlBan Programme - n. E05M053040B
Jak rozumieć „historyczność” biblijnego Daniela? Różne kierunki wyjaśniania orędzia Księgi Daniela
The subject of this article is the issue of the historicity of the figure of Daniel, who is the main character of the biblical book bearing his name. The question of whether Daniel is a historical or just a literary figure is important because it influences the exegesis of the text of the Book of Daniel. First, the author will indicate the reasons for questioning the historicity of Daniel, and then he will present different approaches to interpreting the content of the Book of Daniel.
Minor thiols cysteine and cysteinylglycine regulate the competition between glutathione and protein SH groups in human platelets subjected to oxidative stress
Changes in the concentrations of protein-mixed disulfides (XS-SP) of glutathione (GSH), cysteine (CSH), and cysteinylglycine (CGSH) were studied in human platelets treated with diamide and t-BOOH in timecourse experiments (time range, 1-30 min) in order to understand the contribution of minor thiols CSH and CGSH to the regulation of glutathione-protein mixed disulfides (GS-SP). Diamide was much more potent than t-BOOH in altering the platelet thiol composition of XS-SP (threshold dose: diamide, 0.03 mM; t-BOOH, 0.5 mM) and caused reversible XS-SP peaks whose magnitude was related to the concentration of free thiols in untreated cells. Thus maximum levels of GS-SP (8 min after 0.4 mM diamide) were about 16-fold higher than those of controls (untreated platelets, GS-SP = 0.374 nmol/109 platelets), whereas those of CS-SP and CGS-SP were only 4-fold increased (untreated platelets, CS-SP = 0.112 nmol/109 platelets; CGS-SP = 0.024 nmol/109 platelets). The greater effects of diamide with respect to t-BOOH were explained on the basis of the activities of fast reactive protein SH groups for diamide and glutathione reductase (GR) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) for t-BOOH. The addition of cysteine (0.3 mM, at 4 min) after treatment of platelets with 0.4 mM diamide increased the rate of reversal of GS-SP peaks to normal values, but also caused a relevant change in CGS-SP with respect to that of platelets treated with diamide alone. An increased γ-glutamyltranspeptidase activity was found in platelets treated with diamide. Moreover, untreated platelets were found to release and hydrolyze GSH to CGSH and CSH. Ratios of thiols/disulfides (XSH/XSSX) and activities of GR and G-6PDH were also related to a high reducing potential exerted by GSH but not by minor thiols. The lower mass and charge of minor thiols is a likely requisite of the regulation of GS-SP levels in platelets. (C) 2000 Academic Press

Interactions between Reflection and Praxis in the History of Economic Thought. The case of the Franciscan Cicles from XIII Century Assisi to the Present
Abstract: Daniela Parisi analyses the impact of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, from the perspective of the history of economic thought.
The research seeks to understand the relationship between the different forms that the city has acquired over time and contemporary forms of appropriation, based on a theoretical discussion of concepts and criteria of authors who discuss the performance of the form of the city in relation to the appropriation of public spaces. Based on this debate, we selected criteria related to appropriation, both at the scale of city structure and at the scale of place configuration, and proceeded to the characterization and analysis of the contemporary city of Quito in a search to identify spatial patterns directly associated with a positive appropriation of the city in Quito´s culture. The selected criteria and the positive patterns identified oriented the design guidelines here proposed for the architectural design of the Paróquia of Cumbayá - an area of expansion in the city of Quito, Ecuador - in an attempt to comply with the criteria of good urban form performance so as to enhance the appropriation of its public spaces
