The use of electronic information services by students at Glasgow Caledonian University: background to the project and introductory focus groups

    No full text
This paper reports on the first stage of a study on the usage of electronic information services (EIS) by staff and students at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU). The study used by qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The questionnaires used at GCU were modeled on those developed at LMU. The project aimed to monitor off-campus usage of EIS, the use of passworded databases, and the freely available internet. The volume of electronic citations in students’ course work and the possibility of developing routine performance indicators were also examined. Focus Groups were conducted with both staff and students between November 2001 and March 2002. These suggested, inter alia, that paramedics are the heaviest users of EIS and that paramedicine is the subject area where EIS are most integrated into the curriculum. Attitudes to the internet are extremely varied. Mode of attendance and workplace usage are important factors

Profiling and understanding student information behaviour: Methodologies and meaning

    No full text
This paper draws on work conducted under the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) User Behaviour Monitoring and Evaluation Framework to identify a range of issues associated with research design that can form a platform for enquiry about knowledge creation in the arena of user behaviour. The Framework has developed a multidimensional set of tools for profiling, monitoring and evaluating user behaviour. The Framework has two main approaches: one, a broad‐based survey which generates both a qualitative and a quantitative profile of user behaviour, and the other a longitudinal qualitative study of user behaviour that (in addition to providing in‐depth insights) is the basis for the development of the EIS (Electronic Information Services) Diagnostic Toolkit. The strengths and weaknesses of the Framework approach are evaluated. In the context of profiling user behaviour, key methodological concerns relate to: representativeness, sampling and access, the selection of appropriate measures and the interpretation of those measures. Qualitative approaches are used to generate detailed insights. These include detailed narratives, case study analysis and gap analysis. The messages from this qualitative analysis do not lend themselves to simple summarization. One approach that has been employed to capture and interpret these messages is the development of the EIS Diagnostic Toolkit. This toolkit can be used to assess and monitor an institution's progress with embedding EIS into learning processes. Finally, consideration must be given to integration of insights generated through different strands within the Framework

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Effect of Corrosion on the High Cycle Fatigue Strength of Martensitic Stainless Steel X12CrNiMoV12-3

This paper addresses the effects of corrosion on the high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength of a high mechanical strength martensitic stainless steel (X12CrNiMoV12-3) that is used in aeronautic applications. HCF tests (between 105 and 107 cycles) were carried out in two environments: (i) in air and (ii) in an aqueous solution (pH = 6) of 0.1 M NaCl + 0.044 M Na2SO4 at a loading frequency of 120 Hz. Surface crack initiation is observed in air, whereas in solution, the crack initiated at corrosion defects. The decrease observed in the corrosion fatigue strength of specimens at 107 cycles was 33% of that of similar specimens tested in air. The electrochemical behaviour of the passive film was investigated during fatigue testing in a NaCl aqueous solution by monitoring the free potential and through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Based on fractography analysis and the EIS tests results, fatigue crack initiation mechanisms in air and in the NaCl aqueous solution were identified. A scenario for fatigue crack initiation is proposed based on the physical evidence. Local passive film ruptures are the cause of the corrosion fatigue crack initiation. The film is broken by material strain from the applied cyclic stress during fatigue testing, causing increased local corrosive attack. This effect has been shown at 10 Hz and 120 Hz because the characteristic time for repassivation for the steel is very low compared to the period of the cyclic loading

A label free electrochemical nanobiosensor study

Nano-porous silicon (PS) is an attractive material for incorporation into biosensors, because it has a large surface area combined with the ability to generate both optical and electrical signals. In this paper, we describe a label-free nanobiosensor for bovine serum albumin (BSA). Nano-porous silicon produced in our laboratory was functionalized prior to immobilization of anti-BSA antibody on the surface. Reaction with BSA in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) buffer resulted in an impedance change which was inversely proportional to the concentration of the analyte. The system PBS buffer/antigen-antibody/PS constitutes an electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) structure, thus furnishing an impedance EIS nanobiosensor. The linear range of the sensor was 0-0.27 mg mL-1 and the sensitivity was less than 10 µg mL-1

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

This writing works with a curriculum and didactics of the translation. This act of writing join the poetic image to think about displacements of the seven elements that constitute the blocks of thought about a curriculum (EIS) and didactics (AICE). The writing comes from the body of the thought and the language that they clash at time to think of creation, under the philosophical concepts of Deleuze and the philosophy of difference. The meanings of the words transcend the literal meaning, when they are get using as poetic images and recreated in an Dancing of EIS AICE. It produces poetics in the at tempt to put, agoing, texts of the eisaiceanas images when they are operat ionalized with materials developed in the Escrileituras Project: um modo de ler e escrever em meio à vida, Obeduc / CAPES / INEP (2011-2014), problematizing the teaching activity in spaces of the curriculum and didactics by showing their experiments in three writing blocks. So that the words move through a dancing becoming, seeking a void of speech, of an author and of a writreading to come. The writing proposes to provide, before the operative archives, different ways of thinking about the block of thought of EIS AICE
