A light in the dark: using cabled seafloor observatories to study abundance and behaviour of seafloor megafauna in response to environmental change
Surface primary productivity forms the base of most marine food webs and contributes
significantly to global carbon cycling, providing a key link from surface to seafloor. High
seasonal primary productivity along temperate latitude coastlines provides crucial nutrients for
seafloor communities, driving spatiotemporal patterns in abundance, behaviour, biodiversity, and
distribution of benthic megafauna. Many factors, including ocean warming, deoxygenation, and
increasing frequency and duration of marine heatwaves (MHW), may alter the dynamics
governing primary production, threatening benthic organisms that depend on the seasonal input
of phytodetritus for food. The focus of this thesis is to make use of two seafloor observatories,
NEPTUNE near Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and a new platform in Conception Bay,
NL, to examine variability in abundance, behaviour, and composition of seafloor communities in
response to environmental change across temporal scales. First, the response of the deep-sea pink
urchin Strongylocentrotus fragilis to a recent MHW on the continental margin off the coast of
Vancouver Island was investigated using a combination of benthic trawls (2004-2018) and
seafloor observatory data (2013-2020). Sea urchin density declined during the MHW, likely in
response to reduced kelp subsidies from coastal waters. Next, the new Holyrood Underwater
Observatory in Conception Bay was used to study benthic community response to the spring
phytoplankton bloom. High-frequency variability in seafloor environmental dynamics was
documented during the winter-spring transition, and the unexpected emergence of >200 sea
cucumbers (Psolus sp.) coinciding with the arrival of phytodetritus at the seafloor was observed.
These data will provide a baseline against which to monitor changes in phenology as climate
change progresses. This work comes at a critical point in ocean observing as we approach global
climate tipping points. Now more than ever, it is essential to document the current state of
marine communities to understand and predict community responses to changing ocean
conditions, and to sustainably manage ocean resources.Includes bibliographical reference
Temporal dynamics of the deep-sea pink urchin Strongylocentrotus fragilis on the Northeast Pacific continental margin
We are thankful for the support from ONC’s marine and digital operations staff for servicing and maintaining the NEPTUNE observatory and for the curation and quality control of all oceanographic data streams used in this study. We also thank the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS), in Sidney, BC, Canada, for the publicly and freely available data from the long-term Line P monitoring program. The Northeast Pacific continental margin is characterized by strong seasonal upwelling, which drives high primary productivity, and supports high diversity and biomass of benthic megafauna. The recent occurrence of a marine heat wave (“The Blob”, sensu Kintisch, 2015) in 2013–2016 resulted in changes to phytoplankton community composition and loss of coastal kelp abundance and diversity, reducing gross primary productivity in the region. However, cumulative effects of marine heat waves and ongoing basin-scale deoxygenation in deepsea ecosystems remain poorly understood. Here, we use a 7-year time series of physicochemical and video imagery data from Ocean Networks Canada’s NEPTUNE observatory to investigate temporal dynamics of the deepsea pink urchin Strongylocentrotus fragilis in relation to multi-year environmental variability. Using generalized additive models, we show that local S. fragilis density at Barkley Upper Slope (420 m) fluctuated over time and was partially explained by changes in dissolved oxygen concentration and suspended particulate matter in the benthic boundary layer (ADCP backscatter), with high urchin density corresponding to high oxygen and low backscatter. Seafloor dissolved oxygen ranged from 0.80 to 1.89 mL/L and varied seasonally, exhibiting a clear negative correlation with sea surface primary productivity (MODIS satellite Chl-a data), corresponding with the onset of yearly upwelling conditions. However, during the anomalously warm years affected by ‘The Blob’, dampened upwelling maintained higher dissolved oxygen conditions near the seafloor. S. fragilis density declined during ‘Blob’ conditions, likely in response to reduced kelp and phytodetritus subsidies from coastal waters. We propose a foraging-respiration trade-off hypothesis, whereby S. fragilis forages in deeper water during weak upwelling and migrates to shallower habitats during low oxygen conditions. S. fragilis is an important bioturbator and detritivore; changes in the density and distribution of this species may directly affect sediment turnover rates and nutrient cycling on the continental margin, with consequences for surface and coastal productivity.Ocean Networks Canada is funded through the Canada Foundation for Innovation-Major Science Initiative (CFI-MSI) fund 30199. Infaunal community responses to ancient clam gardens
Aquatic ecosystems have been managed for millennia. Indigenous communities in North America pioneered numerous marine resource management strategies to ensure food security and support thriving economies, which have been active throughout the Northwest Coast of North America for over 14 000 years. Developed to increase shellfish productivity, clam gardens have been active for millennia. The diverse infaunal communities within these ecosystems can act as indicators of habitat alterations and provide an opportunity to study ecological community responses to seascapes shaped by millennia-old resource management structures. To determine how community structure differs between clam gardens and unmodified areas, we assessed infaunal diversity and density between intertidal mudflats, sandflats, and clam gardens. Differences in community composition were found among site types, with certain taxa, including culturally important species increasing within clam gardens. Per cent similarity analyses indicated that infaunal communities were more dissimilar among, than within site types. Furthermore, regression trees indicated that increases in diversity and density were closely correlated with the amount of shell and gravel within each habitat, which are associated with clam garden function and management practices. Species-specific and environmental responses to clam gardens indicate that human modifications in nearshore habitats created novel and distinct types of soft sediment communities. This research was supported by the Hakai Institute, the Canada Research Chairs Program, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Liber Ero Foundation, Mitacs, The PADI Foundation (Grant/Award No. 29000), the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund.FacultyReviewe
Open Problems in Technical AI Governance
AI progress is creating a growing range of risks and opportunities, but it is
often unclear how they should be navigated. In many cases, the barriers and
uncertainties faced are at least partly technical. Technical AI governance,
referring to technical analysis and tools for supporting the effective
governance of AI, seeks to address such challenges. It can help to (a) identify
areas where intervention is needed, (b) identify and assess the efficacy of
potential governance actions, and (c) enhance governance options by designing
mechanisms for enforcement, incentivization, or compliance. In this paper, we
explain what technical AI governance is, why it is important, and present a
taxonomy and incomplete catalog of its open problems. This paper is intended as
a resource for technical researchers or research funders looking to contribute
to AI governance.Comment: Ben Bucknall and Anka Reuel contributed equally and share the first

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!
Take care,
Ken Pon

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control
Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/)
Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the
message being shared. Enjoy! 5

A Message ■
from ou„r awth^lOtiC DiPOCtO
It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Taber Thrashers get a season after all! With vaccinate numbers up and COVID cases dropping substantially
after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and
Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. But considering
^ey were up against teams with many more years experience, the Thrashers had a phenomenal season!

Global COVID-19 lockdown highlights humans as both threats and custodians of the environment
The global lockdown to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic health risks has altered human interactions with nature. Here, we report immediate impacts of changes in human activities on wildlife and environmental threats during the early lockdown months of 2020, based on 877 qualitative reports and 332 quantitative assessments from 89 different studies. Hundreds of reports of unusual species observations from around the world suggest that animals quickly responded to the reductions in human presence. However, negative effects of lockdown on conservation also emerged, as confinement resulted in some park officials being unable to perform conservation, restoration and enforcement tasks, resulting in local increases in illegal activities such as hunting. Overall, there is a complex mixture of positive and negative effects of the pandemic lockdown on nature, all of which have the potential to lead to cascading responses which in turn impact wildlife and nature conservation. While the net effect of the lockdown will need to be assessed over years as data becomes available and persistent effects emerge, immediate responses were detected across the world. Thus initial qualitative and quantitative data arising from this serendipitous global quasi-experimental perturbation highlights the dual role that humans play in threatening and protecting species and ecosystems. Pathways to favorably tilt this delicate balance include reducing impacts and increasing conservation effectiveness
