Search for the decay Bs0→D*∓π±

    No full text
A search for the decay Bs0→D*∓π± is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0  fb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help us to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs0→π+π- and Bs0→DD̅ . Systematic uncertainties are minimized by using B0→D*∓π± as a normalization channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Bs0→D*∓π±)<6.1(7.8)×10-6 at 90% (95%) confidence level

A new species of Musschia Dumort. (Campanulaceae), endemic from Madeira Archipelago (Portugal), is described as Musschia isambertoi M. Seq., R. Jardim, M. Silva & L. Carvalho. Both vegetative and reproductive structures have been studied and are remarkably distinct from the recognized species [M. aurea (L. f.) Dumort. and M. wollastonii Lowe]. A full description and a diagnosis are included as well as line art, color drawings and pictures. Diagnostic characters are discussed and compared with those of the closely related species. The new species has a very restricted distribution occurring in two isolated populations in the Deserta Grande Island (Madeira Archipelago, Portugal). Nomenclatural aspects on the genus Musschia Dumort. are discussed and a diagnostic key for the species is also includedSe describe una nueva especie de Musschia Dumort.

Phytochemical characterization of the berry like fruits of tutsan (Hypericum Andrsaemun L.).

Hypericum androsaemum L. (family Hypericaceae, Fig. 1) is a small evergreen shrub, fairly common in damp woods and hedgerows within the Mediterranean Basin, mainly in Western and Southern Europe, South-Western Asia, North Africa, while it has been introduced elsewhere. [1,2]. Among Hypericum species, H. androsaemum has the peculiarity to produce fleshy ‘berry-like’ fruits that ripen from red to shiny black. The plant is also known as ‘tutsan’, meaning ‘tout-saine’, i.e. ‘all-heal’, name given for its supposed medicinal properties. In fact, it has been used for its diuretic effect and infusions of the leaves were used for liver, kidney and bladder ailments[3]. In the present work, we reported a comprehensive analysis on the chemical composition, secretory structures, nutritional values and antioxidant potential of the ‘berry-like’ fruits of H. androsaemum collected both from wild and cultivated plants in central Italy. The phenolic profile of methanolic extracts and infusions of red and black fruits was obtained by HPLC-DAD, and correlated with their antioxidant properties which were evaluated by the DPPH, β-Carotene/linoleic acid and hypochlorous acid tests. Moreover, the main polar compounds of the berries were isolated by column chromatography and structurally elucidated by NMR. The red berries showed higher levels of phenolic compounds such as shikimic and chrlorogenic acids with respect to black berries. In addition, the infusion obtained from red berries gave the highest values of antioxidant activity. The composition of the essential oil and aroma components of the fruits were investigated by GC-FID, GC-MS, and HS-SPME-GC-MS. It was found that red fruits have higher content of essential oil and of monoterpene hydrocarbons with respect to black fruits (0.3 vs 0.1%, and 84.0 vs 78.8%, respectively). To complete the work, we performed a morphological and histochemical study on H. androsaemum berries to provide new insights on fruit anatomy, and on the histolocalization of the complex metabolite mixture produced. A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    No full text
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
