A critical analysis of Christian responses to Islamic claims about the work of the Prophet Muhammad, ‘the Messenger of God’.

The aims of this study are to analyse critically the different Christian responses to the Islamic understanding of the work of Muhammad. Chapter one consists a short introduction leading to an appraisal of Muhammad which incorporates historical, hagiographal and Quranic source material, and in the light of relevant Christian and Muslim scholarship. The second chapter presents a summary critical analysis of Muhammad in Christian theological perspective, from 661 A.D. to modern times. Chapter three presents a critique of Christian responses to the Muslim allegations that the text of the Bible has been infected with corruption; and that Muhammad's advent and status are foretold in the unadulterated' scriptures, and in the Gospel of Barnabas. Chapter four examines the theological significance of the work of Muhammad for Christians. Thus, Jesus and Muhammad are critically assessed and contrasted in order to ascertain the importance, for Christians, of the Muslim claims in respect of Muhammad as ’the messenger of God’. Chapter five provides a critical evaluation of the various Christian responses to Muhammad. It is argued that many of the said responses have been entangled in myths and misperceptions which have severely distorted the true account of Muhammad's work. Consequently, many Christians have failed to appreciate the divine legitimacy of Muhammad's call to prophethood. Further, it is argued that Christians should accept that Muhammad is a genuine prophet, and the messenger of God. However, Muhammad's use of the power-structure in order to maintain Islam is in sharp contrast to Jesus’ decision to face the consequences of his ministry passively through faith in God. Accordingly, orthodox Christian belief in the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus provides another dimension to prophethood, where the messenger and the message become one, an identification which finds no parallel in Islam, and which, in the nature of the case, cannot find a parallel

Rabbani Education: Basic Concepts, Design and Implications of Rabbani Education Learning

    No full text
Rabbani education is a basic concept to overcome various problems in human life. This concept is understood as a process that actively develops human potentials through the process of purification, instilling and incarnation into a generation of rabbani. From this understanding, there are three core processes of rabbani education, namely the process of purification, instilling, and incarnation. The design of rabbani education learning is centered within Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Alaq verses 1-5. This surah is the first revelation revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Not only this revelation signifies that the prophet as an Apostle or messenger, but also as a student who was educated by God and became an educator for all humanity. This first revelation contains the core theory of learning design. Therefore, the basic concept and design of rabbani education learning has several implications that can be actualized in the context of Islamic education in this century, namely: 1) rabbani education empties and ends at the peak of a life mission, which is divinity or monotheism; and 2) rabbani education that had been through by the Prophet Muhammad is a reflection of the ideality of an Islamic education process

HHuseyin Gursoy (Ashik Huseyin) is an important figure of ashik tradition whose fame spread from Sivas-Sarikaya to the rest of Anatolia. Ashik Huseyin who was born in 1907 in Sivas-Sarkisla-Sarikaya has a powerful and effective style, extemporary sayings and simple and sincere utterance in his poems like his contemporaries Ashik Veysel and Haji Fedai. In his poems he uses a plain language and he expresses his loyalty to the Prophet Muhammad, his household, the Twelve Imams and the Anatolian Dervishes. Because his poems haven't been collected and compiled yet, some minstrels have claimed that some of his poems belonged to them and they published the poems as if they belonged to them. This causes some problems in researches about him. Another important problem is that the fluency of these poems are ruined as they were transferred from language to language into new generations and the structural elements of the poems (measure, rhyme, etc.) were destroyed in time. These poems compiled from Ashik Veysel and Vahit Poyraz who are the symbols of Sivas and Anatolia, must be compared with Ashik All Izzet's, Karacaoglan's and Pir Sultan's poems in accordance with scientific criteria

Analytical Review of Craig Considines, The Humanity of Muhammad: A Christian View (December 2020) This book, in particular, published in 2020, aims to create stronger bonds of understanding and peace between Christians and Muslims whose common human values continue to be promoted and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is protected. The author discusses several aspects of the Prophet’s life, religious pluralism, social justice, women’s rights, and the importance of knowledge, explaining these as remedies for our contemporary challenges. It references Quranic verses, Hadith, historical events and Sufi poetry as supplementary evidence in order to support its main arguments, that the basis of Islam is founded atop compassion and justice. It gained widespread acclaim but faced criticism for deviations from traditional Islamic teachings, including its unique interpretation of the finality of Prophethood. This review investigates where the book contributes to interfaith harmony as well as academic discourse in the field while also accounting for its limits

Isolated Bangla handwritten character recognition with convolutional neural network

    No full text
The handwritten character recognition (HCR) problem has been studied extensively during the last few decades with varying level of success. Although one of the earliest optical character recognition work was done using an artificial neural network, due to low computational speed and other computational resource constraints, researchers had to move away to formulate the HCR problem of different languages (including Bangla) using the hand crafted features based classification methods. The recent progress of deep learning technologies and significant developments of parallel computing hardware have established a solid platform for the researchers in producing state-of-the-art reliable performance in many fields. Even though deep learning is proving its applicability in different computer vision problems since AlexNet was proposed in 2012, due to lack of significantly large Bangla handwritten character dataset, Bangla HCR could not progress far. Recently, a few initiatives have been taken to build large scale Bangla handwritten character datasets and made them available for public use. In this paper, we propose a modified ResNet-18 architecture (a convolutional neural network architecture) in recognizing Bangla handwritten characters. The proposed method is applied to two recently created isolated Bangla handwritten datasets. The used datasets are relatively large and practical to apply deep learning. Using the proposed method, we achieve the state-of-the-art recognition performance
