Implementation of the Duties of the Village Consultative Body in the Interim Village Head Election in Bondowoso
This study examines the implementation of Article 37 letter h of the Bondowoso Regency Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2020 concerning the duties of the Village Consultative Body (BPD) in holding special village deliberations for the Election of the Interim Village Head (PAW). The background of this research departs from the gap between the normative framework that requires inclusive, democratic, and representative participation and the empirical reality that often shows the dominance of local elites and the lack of community involvement at large. The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent to which BPD's duties in PAW are carried out effectively in accordance with regulatory provisions, as well as to identify obstacles faced in their implementation. This study uses a normative juridical method combined with historical and conceptual approaches. The normative approach is carried out through the study of relevant laws and regulations, a historical approach tracing the development of PAW governance, and a conceptual approach examining academic views and participatory democratic theory. The findings of a case study in Pelalangan Village, Cermee District, show that although procedurally the implementation of PAW has been in accordance with applicable regulations, it still substantially does not meet the principle of fair representation. Village deliberative forums are dominated by certain community leaders, while women's groups, youth, marginalized communities, and the general public are less involved. The causative factors include low public legal literacy, the absence of clear technical guidelines regarding the composition of representation, and the lack of public information disclosure. This study concludes that the implementation of PAW requires regulatory reform, the preparation of technical guidelines for inclusive participation, and sustainable community empowerment to ensure democratic legitimacy. Strengthening structural and cultural aspects is the key to realizing a fair, participatory, and reflective PAW that reflects the aspirations of the entire community
From Convenience to Concern: Exploring AI Paraphrasing Tools in Academic Writing Practices across Indonesia
Increasing numbers of educational institutions are using artificial intelligence (AI) tools, especially paraphrasing software. This technology is beneficial; however, it also raises concerns about its potential impact on writing development, originality, and creative thinking in higher education. Therefore, this qualitative exploratory study examines perspectives and usage patterns of paraphrasing tools among 25 lecturers at universities from eight regions across five islands in Indonesia. It further explores how lecturers keep students engaged, encourage creative thinking, and maintain academic integrity when AI support is available. The data collection process employed open-ended questions, enabling participants to provide detailed accounts of their experiences with paraphrasing tools, frequency and duration of use, underlying motivations, and pedagogical strategies used to promote critical thinking. The results show that most participants believe paraphrasing tools can help overcome writer’s block and reduce excessive textual similarity in academic submissions. Nonetheless, participants expressed concerns about possible over-reliance, superficial revisions, and diminished idea generation, which could hinder the creation of original arguments and an authentic authorial voice. Participants therefore recommend project-based learning (PjBL), problem-based learning (PBL), authentic writing tasks, and a process-based approach, complemented by explicit guidance on ethical AI use. This study concludes that although AI tools can provide substantial support, lecturers should integrate them through pedagogies that emphasize authentic writing processes, reflective practice, and independent thinking. Therefore, universities should set clear AI-use policies and train lecturers to integrate paraphrasing tools through authentic, process-based PBL/PjBL to support originality, critical thinking, and academic integrity

Pesantren are Islamic educational institutions that have played a historical and strategic role in shaping children’s character and instilling Islamic values. In the modern era, children’s education faces multidimensional challenges arising from globalization, the rapid development of digital technology, and shifts in social and cultural values. This article aims to systematically examine the role of pesantren in children’s education in the modern era, with a particular focus on the integration of Islamic values, character formation, institutional challenges, and strategies for strengthening the role of pesantren. This study employs a qualitative approach using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, drawing on relevant scholarly sources, including journal articles, academic books, and policy documents. The findings indicate that pesantren function as value-based educational institutions that integrate religious education, formal education, and daily life guidance through a boarding school system. This educational model enables the consistent internalization of Islamic values and character development in children. Nevertheless, pesantren face significant challenges, including the rapid advancement of digital technology, changes in students’ characteristics, and increasing demands for educational quality improvement. Therefore, strengthening integrative curricula, enhancing educators’ competencies, and the wise utilization of technology are key strategies to maintain the relevance of pesantren in children’s education in the modern era
Strategi Meningkatkan Skill Communication Santri Melalui Kegiatan Muhadharah di Ma’had Ulul Albab MAN 2 Lamongan
This research is motivated by the importance of communication skills in shaping the personality of students (santri) to face 21st-century challenges. At Ma’had Ulul Albab MAN 2 Lamongan, muhadharah (public speaking activities) serves as the primary strategy for training students to speak in public. However, several obstacles persist, such as low self-confidence, over-reliance on scripts, and difficulties in interaction. This study aims to describe the implementation, strategies, and benefits of muhadharah activities in improving students' communication skills. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with a field study approach. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The strategies used include continuous training, personal mentoring, motivation, and variations in delivery methods, such as memorizing and understanding the material. Students demonstrated improvements in courage, speaking fluency, and the ability to convey ideas systematically. In conclusion, muhadharah activities are effective as a strategy to enhance students' communication skills. This study suggests that the ma’had should continuously evaluate and develop muhadharah methods to be more varied and adaptive to modern needs, while providing intensive assistance for students who still face communication barriers
Mapping the Challenges: An In-Depth Analysis of Common Flaws in Six Undergraduate ELT Research Proposals
Research proposal writing constitutes a critical gateway to independent scholarly inquiry in English Language Teaching (ELT) undergraduate programs, yet a significant number of proposals fail to meet academic standards due to recurrent structural and rhetorical weaknesses. This study addresses the gap in fine-grained, holistic analyses of undergraduate ELT proposals by conducting an in-depth qualitative document analysis of six research proposals submitted for a proposal seminar at an Indonesian university. Employing genre analysis and academic literacies as theoretical lenses, the study systematically mapped common flaws across three intercon nected analytical categories: content and argumentation, methodology, and rhetorical and formal conventions. Data analysis followed an iterative thematic analysis procedure using NVivo software, with investigator triangulation enhancing credibility. Findings revealed pervasive and systemically interconnected weaknesses: all six proposals exhibited descriptive rather than analytical literature reviews, leading to vague problem statements and poorly formulated research questions. Methodologically, four proposals demonstrated critical misalignment between research questions and design, while all six suffered from insufficient operational detail in sampling, data collection, and analysis procedures. Rhetorically, the absence of coherent logical flow, inconsistent terminology, and pervasive citation errors compromised scholarly credibility across the sample. These findings demonstrate that flaws are not isolated but cascading, with weaknesses in problem framing precipitating methodological confusion. The study contributes empirical, text-based evidence to inform targeted pedagogical interventions in research methodology courses and supervisory practices, ultimately strengthening the foundational research competencies of future ELT professionals
