Photoelectrochemical study of modified Ag doped ZnO photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of Reactive Red (RR4) dye

    No full text
In this study, Ag-ZnO photocatalysts were prepared with 1%,3%,5%,7% and 9% of Ag loading. All Ag-ZnO photocatalysts undergoes photo deposition under the irradiation of 250-W metal halide lamp to dope Ag nanoparticles onto the surface of ZnO with AgNO3 acting as the Ag precursor. The prepared Ag-ZnO samples were characterized using FTIR and PEC analyses. Photocatalytic activity of these modified Ag-ZnO samples were evaluated under photodegradation of Reactive Red (RR4) dye with an initial concentration of 25 mg L-1, under the irradiation of 55-W household fluorescent lamp for a duration of 60 minutes. It was found that modified Ag-ZnO prepared slightly higher photodegradation rate of RR4 in comparison to the unmodified ZnO. The optimum photocatalytic activity of the modified Ag-ZnO under photodegradation of RR4 was found at 7% Ag-ZnO with rate constants of 0.0975 and follows by 0.0742 min-1 for 9% Ag-ZnO respectively. The results of FTIR and PEC analyses showed the presence of Ag inside the ZnO lattice indicating the doping of Ag nanoparticles onto unmodified ZnO under photo deposition method is successful

Unlocking the aromatic compound in spent coffee ground (SCG) potential of aromatherapy candles

    No full text
This study explores the viability of spent coffee grounds (SCG) as an eco- friendly source of aromatic compounds for aromatherapy candles, tackling the issue of waste associated with coffee production and the demand for sustainable fragrance options. The research objectives include identifying aromatic compounds within SCG extracts, evaluating their physicochemical characteristics, and assessing the effectiveness of SCG-based candles in enhancing user well-being. To achieve these goals, the study utilizes Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Total Phenolic Content (TPC) analysis for compound identification, along with controlled experiments and surveys involving students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Findings demonstrate that SCG can be effectively transformed into candles with beneficial aromatic properties, resulting in increased relaxation and decreased stress levels among participants. The study concludes by emphasizing the advantages of utilizing SCG, which not only aids in waste reduction but also offers a natural means of improving well-being, thereby supporting sustainability in the aromatherapy industry

A review on recycling and upcycling of plastic waste to value-added products

    No full text
Plastic is a common material that has been used widely, consequently has caused adverse effect human health and environment. Global plastic production was estimated to be 311 million tonnes in 2014 and has been predicted to be double in 20 years and getting to increase towards 2050. The presence of plastic waste can give detrimental impact to human health such as disruption of the endocrine system, reproductive problems, and respiratory issues. Other than that, plastic waste will also have a negative impact on the ecological environment. The existence of plastic waste in the environment may degrade soil quality in terms of soil structure and fertility. The negative effects of plastic waste have sparked interest in developing focused research and development into recycling and upcycling as ways to bring about a more circular economy for plastics. The objective of this study is to overview the recent technologies for recycling and upcycling methods for plastic waste. This study provides an assessment of the plastic waste problem, inquiring about the occurrence and popularity of plastic pollution, the unfavourable effects on human health and ecological environments, as well as evaluating recent recycling methods and approaching upcycling technologies that transform discarded plastics into value-added products. The findings of this study provide astute information to guide the future direction of plastic waste management and technological advancements to address the accelerating environmental and public health challenges posed by global plastic pollution

Enhancing stability and functionality of macrocyclic schiff base ligands with salicylaldehyde-derived compounds

    No full text
This review explores the stability and functionality of macrocyclic Schiff base (MSB) ligands and their salicylaldehyde-derived compounds. Acyclic ligands used in metal-ligand complexation suffer from kinetic lability and weak structural rigidity, making them inefficient for long-term applications such as heavy metal removal, medicinal chemistry, and chemosensing. Macrocyclic Schiff base ligands offer a promising solution by enhancing stability and selectivity through their pre-organized cyclic structures and azomethine (-C=N-) functional groups. However, further improvements in solubility, metal affinity, and structural adaptability are required for broader industrial applications. The main objectives of this review are to analyze the properties, synthesis methods and modifications of MSB ligands and their salicylaldehyde-derived compounds to enhance ligand stability and to explore their effectiveness in medicinal, water treatment, and chemosensor applications. Drawing from an extensive collection of literature, this review provides insights into how macrocyclic structures and Schiff base functionalities synergistically improve ligand performance. Salicylaldehyde-derived MSB ligands, with strategic structural modifications, exhibit enhanced stability, solubility, and structural diversity. Key findings highlight the applicability of these ligands in fields such as medicinal chemistry, water treatment, and chemosensors, demonstrating their effectiveness in practical applications
