Further evidence that orthographic rime usage in nonword reading increases with word-level reading proficiency

This research investigated children's use of orthographic rime correspondences in nonword reading in association with word-level reading skills. Experiment 1 demonstrated an increase in the use of orthographic rime correspondences in two independent nonword reading tasks from second to fourth grade. There was no further increase from fourth to sixth grade. In an ambiguous nonword reading task, where graphemephoneme and orthographic rime correspondences yielded conflicting pronunciations, the use of orthographic rime correspondences varied with the orthographic onset employed. The use of orthographic rime correspondences in reading ambiguous non-words was more strongly associated with word-level reading skills than was the use of grapheme-phoneme correspondences. Experiment 2 replicated the main findings of Experiment 1 concerning the association between word-level reading skills and the use of orthographic rime correspondences in nonword reading within second-grade children. These findings suggest that the use of orthographic rime correspondences in the phonological recoding process increases with word-level reading proficiency

SRIME: a strengthened RIME with Latin hypercube sampling and embedded distance-based selection for engineering optimization problems

This paper proposes a strengthened RIME algorithm to tackle continuous optimization problems. RIME is a newly proposed physical-based evolutionary algorithm (EA) inspired by the soft and hard rime growth process of rime-ice, which has a powerful exploitation ability. But in complex optimization problems, RIME will easily trap into local optima and the optimization will become stagnation. Noticing this issue, we introduce three techniques to the original RIME: (1) Latin hypercube sampling replaces the random generator as the initialization strategy, (2) modified hard rime search strategy, and (3) embedded distance-based selection mechanism. We evaluate our proposed SRIME in 10-D, 30-D, 50-D, and 100-D CEC2020 benchmark functions and eight real-world engineering optimization problems with nine state-of-the-art EAs. Experimental and statistical results show that the introduction of three techniques can significantly accelerate the optimization of the RIME algorithm, and SRIME is a competitive optimization technique in real-world applications. Ablation experiments are also provided to analyze our proposed three techniques independently, and the embedded distance-based selection contributes most to the improvement of SRIME. The essay focuses on some portions of the huge corpus of Torquato Tasso’s rime, mainly underlining their relationship with the poet’s biography, as explained through several of them, and reflecting on the composition of his three-part volume of rime (love poems, celebratory poems, sacred poems) and the strategic functions and rhetorical means that the Author uses to mark the unity of his collection of lyric poems as conceived and partially published under his supervision during the last years of his life

    LE RIME DI VITTORIO ALFIERI

This dissertation focuses on the Rime of Vittorio Alfieri (1749-1803), aiming to enlighten, through a thematic, stylistic and philological commentary of the lyrical works in their entirety, the most significant aspects of the corpus, which counts more than 450 texts, composed during the poet's entire life and included for the most part in the two collections of Rime (1789) and Parte seconda (1799) prepared by the author himself. Although selections of Alfieri's poems have been repeatedly and effectively investigated from several perspectives, little has, however, been done to provide an encompassing commentary of the Rime, a lack which can be mainly ascribed to the problematical state of the critical edition, largely outdated by further discoveries of unknown poems after its first publication in 1933 and prepared by collating together only a few of the surviving manuscripts and the editiones principes. The chronological method of analysis, allowed by the constant presence in the autographs of date and time of composition for each poem, and the renewed study of the manuscripts and the first editions have resulted in the overcoming of the issues connected with the complex tradition and in the developing of a wide and detailed analysis of the whole lyrical production, which thus has been profitably read as a diary in verses, a lyrical autobiography formed by fragments written day by day before the Vita scritta da esso

    Lettere e Rime

The commentary of Lettere e rime which Chiara Matraini (1515-1604) published in Venice with the editor Moretti in 1597, when she was 82, intends to provide an organic analysis of the composition, of the relationship between the genres, of the modalities of the “imitatio” and of the philosophical, social and cultural substrate acting as a background in her last chansonnier. The study also focuses on her stylistic changes over a period of forty years (1555-1597), from the adherence to Petrarch and Bembo’s canon to the end-of-the-century Mannerism, as well as on the counter-reformist twist characterizing a parallel writing of philosophical and devotional nature, which can be seen here between the lines. The investigation also takes the liber of Lettere e rime as a deliberately organic and structured whole in the meeting between the letters and the poems. By virtue of its ‘marginality’ as well, this shows a complex work, emerging together with the many afterthoughts which animated the long, almost century-long, life of the author from Lucca

Una riscrittura spirituale femminile dei Fragmenta: le Rime di Lucia Colao

The essay aims to analize the Rime spirituali of Lucia Colao, dedicated to Francesco de’ Medici and Bianca Cappello, and conserved in two working manuscript at the Biblioteca Comunale in Treviso (ms. 3125) and at the Biblioteca Civica of Vittorio Veneto (ms. 683). Colao’s lyric collection represents the rare case of the contribution by a female author to the experience of the religious poetic rewriting initiated in the 1530s by Girolamo Malipiero’ Petrarcha spirituale and Giacomo Salvatorino’s Thesoro de sacra scriptura sopra le rime di Petrarcha, and continued in her own age by writers such as Crisippo Selva (Scelta delle rime del Tasso fatta spirituale) and Giulio Cornelio Graziani (Orlando santo). Colao’s religious contrafactum of Petrarch’s Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta concerns a rewriting of 157 poems, which maintains the original meter and rhyme words but substitutes a new religious subject matter for the original’s profane themes, a new religious subject matter developed from a female point of view

Le Rime di Bernardo Cappello. Edizione critica

Bernardo Cappello (Venezia 1498 ca.-Roma 1560), member of one of the oldest patrician families of Venice, played an active role in the politics of the Venetian Republic, until his exile in 1540. After that, he became a collaborator and a protégé of cardinal Alessandro Farnese, who is one of the most significant figures of the century. Then he took refuge in Rome, where over the years he held varied appointments. Since his youth and in parallel with his political career, Cappello constantly devoted himself to humanistic studies and to rhymes production: pupil of Pietro Bembo, interlocutor of Giovanni Della Casa and close friend to Bernardo Tasso, the author is among the greatest exponents of the sixteenth-century Petrarchism. For the first time the critical edition of Rime by Bernardo Cappello is here given, namely the book of 353 compositions that the author elaborated on the pattern of Bembo’s directives, over a large period of time. In his book of poetry (canzoniere), through lyrical pieces, the author creates his own existential and biographical path. Regarding the evolution of the architecture of Cappello’s collection, four witnesses survived, in which we distinguish different phases: the first one is genetic and manuscript (Roma, Biblioteca Casanatense, 277), with addition of corrections that generally are close to the textual variants of the princeps; the second is the print of 1560 for the press of the Guerra brothers; finally, a further evolutionary stage is represented by two postillated prints. To these witnesses a rich miscellaneous tradition is added, which, for a large number of rhymes, restores the elaborative complexity through multiple genetic forms. Poems ousted from the ancient print, but part of the canzoniere in other phases of composition, are included in this critical edition

Within the theme 'psychotherapy and spirituality in health', this article presents the RIME Intervention (Relaxation, Mental Images and Spirituality) that was developed and perfected by the author for eighteen years, through master's, doctoral and postdoctoral studies, both in patients in palliatives care, in the terminal phase, as well as in patients with possibilities of cure. Our goal is introduce to the reader to the brief psychotherapy by alchemical images RIME, describing the step by step for its application. The methodological approach used for the development of RIME, throughout the studies, comprised the qualitative and the quantitative method. The RIME Intervention is a brief psychotherapy, of a complementary character, developed for a hospital environment, which integrates the techniques of relaxation, directed imagination and elements of spirituality, in a symbolic and transpersonal approach. Although it was developed for the hospital environment, it can be used as an adjuvant technique in the classic psychotherapeutic process in the clinic. It has been observed that RIME promotes the connection with the Inner Wisdom, with the Sacred, in order to minimize anguish, to re-signify psychic pain, spiritual pain, or a focus of suffering, defined by the patient. It allows strengthening the healthy psychic resources and the resilience, promoting the quality of life in the process of the disease. Because it is a brief psychotherapy, it can be applied by all health professionals, both in situations of the palliative care and in situations of healing possibilities.
