L’INVISIBLE ET LE VISIBLE SELON ALAIN ROBBE-GRILLET (The Invisible and the Visible in the Work of Alain Robbe–Grillet)
The present text is an attempt to re-read Robbe-Grillet’s Jealousy in the perspective of what modern psychology calls “the theory of mind”. The author attempts to show that Robbe-Grillet’s literary procedure consists, at least in part, in presenting the characters as deprived of inner mental states, thus approaching the theory of “mindblindness”, presented in a different context, by the psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen
Abstract: We will try to analyze the space’s and the object’s representation in Alain Robbe-Grillet’s works as part of a problem about the identity. If the nouveau romancier breaks with the traditional representation forms of the novel’s universe, it’s because he plays constantly with the signs that enable to determine the identity of the décor’s elements. Thus, we will expose some dialectical tensions by which the author perceive and conceive the space and its objects, in order to show that his techniques constitute a poetics of the reconstruction. Afekt a exteriorita: Robbe-Grilletova sartrovská inspirace || Affect and Exteriority: Sartrian Inspiration of Alain Robbe-Grillet
In the present text, the author focuses on Sartre’s influence on the work of Alain Robbe-Grillet. Sartre’s text that seems to have represented a major source of inspiration for Robbe-Grillet’s writing is
a short 1939 essay entitled „Intentionality: A Fundamental Idea of Husserl’s Phenomenology“, where
Sartre refuses the idea of knowledge as an absorption of objects in subject’s interiority. In the second
part of the present paper, the author offers a close reading of Robbe-Grillet’s Jealousy to support this
view, concentrating in particular on the problem of affectivit
Literatura francesa. This paper intends, starting with the Analysis of the Discourse (FIORIN, 1999), to reflect about transformations in the Alain Robbe-Grillet’s poetic, celebrated author of the Nouveau Roman. We analyse his vinculations with the modern writing and her auto-reference, in spite of the entirety of his work, which permits an understending of a growing referenciality. Key words: Robbe-Grillet. Pacemaker guided screening for severe sleep apnea, a possible option for patients with atrial fibrillation: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Introduction Obstructive sleep apnea is often underdiagnosed in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients although it is an important risk factor. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to assess which techniques cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) and Holter monitors use to screen for sleep apnea (SA), and to evaluate if these are suitable for AF patients from a diagnostic accuracy perspective. Methods The search was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-guidelines. PICO was defined as (P) patients with AF, (I) Holter monitors or CIED suitable for screening for SA, (C) overnight polysomnography (PSG), (O) positive screening with subsequent positive polysomnographic diagnosis of SA. Optimal index test cut-off points corresponding to reference test cut-off for severe SA (PSG-AHI >= 30) were compared. Meta-analysis was conducted for the diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), with forest plot and ROC-curve for summary DOR.Results A total of five prospective cohort studies (n = 192) were included in the systematic review of which four studies (n = 132) were included in the meta-analysis. All included studies use transthoracic impedance measurement as a screening parameter. No studies evaluating Holter monitors were included. The population consisted of patients indicated for pacemaker implantation. The summary DOR was 27.14 (8.83; 83.37), AUC was 0.8689 (0.6872; 0.9456) and Q* was 0.8390 (0.7482; 0.9013).Conclusion At optimal pacemaker-cut-off, pacemaker-guided screening for severe SA in patients with AF can be an effective triage tool for clinical practice. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to strengthen the evidence for this conclusion. This study is part of Limburg Clinical Research Center, supported by the foundation Limburg Sterk Merk, province of Limburg, Flemish government, Hasselt University, Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg and Jessa Hospital
Alain Robbe-Grillet. Les Sables mouvants du texte
Alain Robbe-Grillet is often regarded as the leader of the French New Novel, a 20th century literary movement breaking with literary realism. A former scientist, Robbe-Grillet invents a new Real, where imagination, memories, fantasies and dreams are given a power somehow superior to that of tangible reality. The text becomes a laboratory, where the author performs experiments with language. Runs, a proliferating intertextuality and constant slidings in the text often mislead the reader. Moreover, and especially since the publishing of three pseudo-autobiographical books, Robbe-Grillet blurs the relation between the concepts of author, narrator and character, making it difficult to seize the Subject at work in an often ironical text. This text appears as a protective and self-defensive envelope of words, and recalls a motherly entity, a fantasy of self-engenderment.Nevertheless, self-defense underlies a feeling of guilt. According to Roland Barthes, writers, handling the mother-tongue, could be regarded as playing with the body of the mother, an activity that criticism often connects to what psycho-analysis calls an OEdipus complex. However controversial the psycho-analytical approach of literature may be, the Robbe-Grillet text invites and justifies such a reading. Sado-erotic fantasies, fetishism, clear allusions to Freudian or Lacanian themes reinforce the idea that psychoanalysis is one of the main threads in the Robbe-Grillet discourse. Meanwhile, many traps in the text tend to deconstruct psycho-analytical criticism. Robbe-Grillet claims he is conscious that he lives in what he calls a "post-freudian society" and denies psycho-analysis as an authority. One could consider psycho-analysis as religion, another target of the Robbe-Grillet text, patriarchal authorities defining a certain number of taboos, among them that of incest. Yet, the attacks against them can be understood as an ultimate attempt to destroy the father-image, and expose a genuine search for the lost paradise of the womb.Through an analysis of the relation to the Real, the function of intertextuality, guilt and the psychoanalytical discourse in Robbe-Grillet's works from Un régicide to Les Derniers Jours de Corinthe, this study tries to establish that the exposition of incest, even under cover of an implicit critique of psychoanalysis, is still a way to keep the fantasy alive; in other words, to go from the couch to the bed and not the opposite.</p
Robbe-Grillet in Barthes. Not so close, not too far
Pourtant, si Barthes avait “tué” l’auteur –encore qu’il a lui-même permis son retour textuel–; si Robbe-Grillet l’avait bien dissimulé dans ses romans, les deux vont cheminer ensemble vers le “romanesque”.Barthes was one of the first to support Robbe-Grillet's first texts, just as Robbe-Grillet was one of the first to publicly highlight the status of Barthes' as a writer, non only critic and semiologist. From 1945 to 1980, the year of Barthes' premature death, the presence of Robbe-Grillet's writing in Barthesian reflections will be evident, not only in the articles included in the Critical Essays, but in 29 texts by Barthes. The objective in this study is to show the different modulations of this critical-literary approach, and to address the misunderstandings that have arisen. Barthes would have liked the primacy of the object to be maintained, devoid of any psychology, the annulment of meaning, in the way proposed in Degree zero. However, although Barthes has “killed” the author –although he himself allowed his textual return–; although Robbe-Grillet has hidden it well in his novels, the two will walk together towards the “Romanesque”
Fantasy and representation in Robbe-Grillet's work
The aim of this Thesis is to examine and interpret the two main notions of Robbe-Grillet’s overall work which are “Fantasy” and “Representation”. This will mainly be demonstrated by the different relationships that are developing between the two concepts and the way they edify the work of the Nouveau Romancier. The fashion in which Robbe-Grillet characterizes fantasy will be the central argument of this Thesis Dissertation, but we will also discuss the idea of representation through the motive of theatre. In fact, the characters of Robbe-Grillet’s movies and books keep on playing stereotypical roles (a spy, a prostitute, a sadist doctor etc…) and the places represented at the beginning of the story frequently transform the scene as a spectacle. For the author of Jalousie, fantasy is strongly dramatized as shown by the omnipresence of the sadomasochism thematic. Since the work of Robbe-Grillet offers a place where everything is possible, it fantasizes its own gestation. Pictured by the text he engendered, the Nouveau Romancier became an object of self-representation within his own work. Open to multiple metamorphoses, his work, as playful as complex, does not try to display the ensemble of its inside mechanisms and leaves the reader the possibility to create his own interpretation by accepting or not the lecture’s path offered by the author. The readerspectator is both at the center and exterior to everything he can read and see, he finds himself at the heart of a representation that is as much his own as the author’s
The Posthumanist Vision of Alain Robbe-Grillet
Alain Robbe-Grillet has long been a favorite object of investigation of literary criticism within French studies. A prolific writer, filmmaker, and theorist, he is often considered as the primary member of the group known as the New Novel, a collection of mostly French authors active in approximately the 1950s-1970s who sought to reinvent the novel through innovative narrative structures. While critical interest on Robbe-Grillet has slowed in recent years, he retains the reputation within literary criticism of being difficult to solve.
Robbe-Grillet’s project, both literary and theoretical, is characterized by opposition to what he sees as the humanism of nineteenth-century literary realism. He seeks to invent narrative structures and elaborate a theoretical vision that would: (1) move away from humanism as a narrative and epistemological model, (2) invent a new conception of the human subject, and (3) more accurately reflect the state of the postwar Western world, which he views as being characterized by complexity, continual change, and technoscientific innovation.
Critical posthumanist theory, which coalesced as a relatively coherent theory primarily in Anglophone humanities departments in the 1990s, addresses many of the same issues and adopts many of the same approaches as Robbe-Grillet. In my dissertation, I argue that Alain Robbe-Grillet should be considered a posthumanist author because of the a-humanist bent of his literary and theoretical project and the similarities that exist between his vision and that of posthumanist scholars. Furthermore, contemporary posthumanist scholars such as Stefan Herbrechter and Mads Thomsen have argued for the use of literature as a field for further development of the theory, as well as for use of the theory as an investigative tool for literary studies. Despite this, only a handful of full-length texts have been published on the link between narrative and posthumanist theory, and I have found no full-length studies produced on French-language texts. In this way, this dissertation provides a new understanding of Robbe-Grillet, contributes to the development of posthumanist critical theory, and demonstrates the potential utility of this theory as a tool for literary criticism in an interdisciplinary approach that combines French literary criticism with Anglophone theory
Alain robbe-grillet and the modernist resignification of catharsis
In a passage from Alain Robbe-Grillet’s Projet pour une révolution à New York, one of the characters enunciates a revolutionary program whose objective is “d’operer une catharsis générale des désirs inavoués de la société contemporaine”. A priori, the concept of “catharsis” supposes a foreign turn to RobbeGrillet’s modernist rhetoric, however, that mention reappears in several essays from the seventies when the author seeks to specify a particular type of aesthetic experience. The objective of this paper is therefore to analyze Robbe-Grillet’s concept of catharsis in order not only to unravel the aesthetic-political project of the novel, but also to rethink the relationship between theory and praxis, liberation from energy and moral effect, aesthetic education and intensification of the pleasure derived from his texts.
