    Porter Hypothesis states that environmental regulation may lead to win-win opportunities, that is, improve the productivity and reduce the undesirable output simultaneously. Based on directional distance function, this paper proposes a novel dynamic activity analysis model to forecast the possibilities of win-win development in Chinese Industry between 2009 and 2049. The evidence reveals that the appropriate energy-saving and emission-abating regulation will result in both the improvement in net growth of potential output and the steadily increasing growth of total factor productivity.     The problem is to determine the number of ‘cops’ needed to capture a ‘robber’ where the game is played with perfect information, the different sides moving alternately. The cops capture the robber when one of them occupies the same vertex as the robber at any time in the game. A copwin graph is one in which one cop can always capture the robber. A graph is cop-win edge-critical with respect to edge contraction (CECC) when the original graph is not cop-win, but the contraction of any edge results in a cop-win graph. In this paper, classes of CECC graphs are determined, and k-regular CECC are characterized for k ≤ 4

    Bit Error Probability for Optimum Combining of Binary Signals in the Presence of Interference and Noise

    We derive an exact bit-error probability (BEP) expression for coherent detection of binary signals with optimum combining in wireless systems in the presence of multiple cochannel interferers and thermal noise. A flat Rayleigh fading environment with space diversity, uncorrelated equal-power interferers, and additive white Gaussian noise is considered. The approach is to use the chain rule of conditional expectation together with the joint probability density function (pdf) of the eigenvalues of the interference correlation matrix. This joint pdf is related to the Vandermonde determinant. Let NA denote the number of antennas and NI the number of interferers. We consider both the cases of an overloaded system, in which NI≥NA, and an underloaded system, in which NIA. Using averaging techniques that make use of the properties of the Vandermonde determinant, we obtain in each of the two cases a closed-form BEP expression as a finite sum, and the only special function that this expression contains is the Gaussian Q-function. This makes it a powerful tool for analysis and computation

    Differences in male and female athletes and their perceptions of an ideal coach with respect to locus of control, competitiveness, goal-orientation and win-orientation

    Plan BThe current study examined differences between male and female athletes and their perceptions of an ideal coach. The study focused on internal vs. external locus of control, competitiveness, goal-orientation and win-orientation as a basis to determine possible differences in an ideal coach. An paired-samples t-test was run to test the similar-to-me effect that states that people will choose a leader or manager like themselves. 104 female and 98 male athletes participated in the study from track and field, baseball, softball and basketball. Results indicated that men preferred a more internal locus, competitive and win-oriented coach than women did. Analysis of the self-reports of the athletes reflected these same findings with men scoring significantly higher on internal locus of control, competitiveness and win-orientation. Analysis of the similar-to-me effect indicated that the athletes did not prefer a coach that is similar to themselves. Each variable in this analysis was significantly different at the .001 level from the ideal coach scale to the self-report scale. Findings thus indicate that men and women will prefer different coaches, but will not choose that ideal coach according to their own personality

    VVV WIN 1733−3349: a low extinction window to probe the far side of the Milky Way bulge

    Windows of low extinction in the Milky Way (MW) have been used along the past decades for the study of the Galactic structure and the stellar population across the inner bulge and disc. Here, we report the analysis of another low extinction near-IR window discovered by the VISTA Variables in the Viá Láctea Survey (VVV). VVV WIN 1733-3349 is about half a degree in size and is conveniently located right in the MW plane, at Galactic coordinates (l, b) = (-5.2,-0.3). The mean extinction of VVV WIN 1733-3349 is AKmathrmsA-{K-{mathrm{ s}}} = 0.61 ± 0.08 mag, which is much smaller than the extinction in the surrounding area. The excess in the star counts is consistent with the reduced extinction and complemented by studying the distribution of red clump (RC) stars. Thanks to the strategic low-latitude location of VVV WIN 1733-3349, we are able to interpret their RC density fluctuations with the expected overdensities due to the presence of the spiral arms beyond the bulge. In addition, we find a clear excess in the number of microlensing events within the window, which corroborates our interpretation that VVV WIN 1733-3349 is revealing the far side of the MW bulge

    Depolarization and decreased surface expression of K+ channels contribute to NSAID-inhibition of intestinal restitution

    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to gastrointestinal ulcer formation by inhibiting epithelial cell migration and mucosal restitution; however, the drug-affected signaling pathways are poorly defined. We investigated whether NSAID inhibition of intestinal epithelial migration is associated with depletion of intracellular polyamines, depolarization of membrane potential (Em) and altered surface expression of K+ channels. Epithelial cell migration in response to the wounding of confluent IEC-6 and IEC-Cdx2 monolayers was reduced by indomethacin (100μM), phenylbutazone (100μM) and NS-398 (100μM) but not by SC-560 (1μM). NSAID-inhibition of intestinal cell migration was not associated with depletion of intracellular polyamines. Treatment of IEC-6 and IEC-Cdx2 cells with indomethacin, phenylbutazone and NS-398 induced significant depolarization of Em, whereas treatment with SC-560 had no effect on Em. The Em of IEC-Cdx2 cells was: −38.5±1.8mV under control conditions; −35.9±1.6mV after treatment with SC-560; −18.8±1.2mV after treatment with indomethacin; and −23.7±1.4mV after treatment with NS-398. Whereas SC-560 had no significant effects on the total cellular expression of Kv1.4 channel protein, indomethacin and NS-398 decreased not only the total cellular expression of Kv1.4, but also the cell surface expression of both Kv1.4 and Kv1.6 channel subunits in IEC-Cdx2. Both Kv1.4 and Kv1.6 channel proteins were immunoprecipitated by Kv1.4 antibody from IEC-Cdx2 lysates, indicating that these subunits co-assemble to form heteromeric Kv channels. These results suggest that NSAID inhibition of epithelial cell migration is independent of polyamine-depletion, and is associated with depolarization of Em and decreased surface expression of heteromeric Kv1 channels.ID: S0006295207001931; M3: Article; Accession Number: S0006295207001931; Author: L.C.     First observation of the decay Bs0→K*0K*0

    The first observation of the decay B0s→K∗0K∗0 is reported using 35 pb−1 of data collected by LHCb in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of 49.8±7.5 B0s→(K+π−)(K−π+) events are observed within ±50 MeV/c2 of the B0s mass and 746 MeV/c2 < mKπ < 1046 MeV/c2, mostly coming from a resonant B0s→K∗0K∗0 signal. The branching fraction and the CP-averaged K∗0 longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be B(B0s→K∗0K∗0)=(2.81±0.46(stat.)±0.45(syst.)±0.34(fs/ fd))×10−5 and fL =0.31±0.12(stat.)±0.04(syst.)
