It is true that only a language is a universally recognized means of speech through which an author strives to pour in the rich pearls of his imagination and the great struggle to find compromise through uncompromising wilderness, making the real tale of true identity literature ,Kamala Das protested against the society\u27s prevailing systems. Her insulted feminine self went on emotional wanderings seeking to discover an identity and liberation expressly for her own and for the entire tradition of women in general. Her compassionate interpretation and description of the Indian woman\u27s problem generally naturally turn her into a feminist. The world of "vacant ecstasy" and sterility was vividly visualized by Kamala Das through numerous functional images and symbols in her poetry. She finds herself catapulted into a series of situations where in the hands of male dominance she became merely a puppet.Being bold, through the medium of poetry and writing, she protested and expressed her frustrations, rancor and loneliness. Her poems epitomize the dilemma of modern Indian women trying to liberate her from the role bondage that patriarchal society sanctioned her sexually and domestically Therefore, Kamala Das\u27s voice to seek her own identity is women\u27s voice to fight for better living conditions and equal human rights

An Analysis of the Treatment of Love and Sexuality in the Poems of Kamala Das

    No full text
Kamala Das, a renowned Indian author and poet, has been widely acclaimed for her bold and confessional style of writing. The research article aims to explore the multidimensional portrayal of love and sexuality in her works, juxtaposing them with the social norms and cultural backdrop of postcolonial India. In fact, everything else is secondary and this subject takes center stage. In reference to Kamala Das’ poetry, the term “love” refers to both passions, which her husband and a number of other men were fully and even excessively satisfied, as well as real love, which she never experienced. Her poetry primarily expresses her dissatisfaction with love. The spectrum of her writings is laden with autobiographical elements. In her works, love is depicted not only as an emotion but also as a tool for self-discovery and liberation from the shackles of conventional society. Despite fully meeting her sexual desires, her husband never believed that a woman should expect true love from her spouse, which is why their marriage failed. There were several sexual partners for her, but none of them ever showed her true affection. Kamala Das discusses her unfulfilled love often in her poems, and she repeatedly confesses her longing for love. At this point, Kamala Das admits that love is a strong emotional connection between a man and a woman, and she also thinks that their physical relationship is significant but secondary. The sexuality of a woman is addressed by Kamala Das, who views it as a crucial component of her overall physical and psychological composition. The article further explores how Das’s portrayal of female sexuality acts as a rebellion against the traditional gender roles and societal expectations placed upon Indian women during her time. The intimate and sensual expression in her works is not only a testament to her unique voice but also reflects the underlying themes of self-assertion and search for identity. It brings to light how her exploration of female empowerment through sexual liberation was both groundbreaking and controversial within the context of Indian society. It highlights her as a trailblazer in bringing the discourse on female sexuality into the mainstream and as a proponent of women’s agency in postcolonial Indian literature. The article illuminates the enduring relevance and the multifaceted nature of Das’s writings

Abstract: English, as it does not have roots in Indian territory, has become the vehicle through which Indian authors are able to express what in their mother tongue would perhaps be considered taboo. Using this powerful tool, as an instrument of protest amidst the precarious conditions in which they found themselves, Kamala Das (1934-2009) and Eunice de Souza (1940-2017) were the feminist voices in Indian society against the patriarchy. Even though they belonged to different religions and castes, they both fought for the same cause, and making their voices to resonate as far as the Tupiniquim voices that decades later are still fighting for the same issues, seems relevant. To introduce the authors' works to the Portuguese-speaking public, work proposes to translate and comment on poems selected under the thematic framework of patriarchy. The corpus will consist of 12 poems, six by each author. In order to compare and analyze the meaning of feminism in India and the West, we will raise a discussion based on the existentialist theory of Beauvoir (1949), adding the thoughts of Nye (1988) and Lerner (2019). The non-Western theoretical framework will be composed of Narayan (1997), Mohanty (2009), and Chaudhuri (2004). The theoretical framework of Translation Studies will analyze how the manipulation of a narrative through translation can generate the misrepresentation of the feminine throughout history. To this end, the theoretical framework will rely on Venuti (1995), Tymoczko (2000), and Aslanov (2015). In the scope of the commented translation, we will use the theories of Torres (2007) and Abes (2023). In addition to the research?s intention of presenting Kamala Das and Eunice de Souza to the Brazilian public, the aim is, through the translation of the poems, to unveil the world of Indian women and analyze how history of translation is linked to the maintenance of patriarchy

Wizerunek mówcy: Kamala Harris i budowanie tożsamości retorycznej w kampanii prezydenckiej 2024 (część 1)

    No full text
This study investigates how Kamala Harris constructed her rhetorical ethos in 2024 presidential campaign rally speeches through the lens of Aristotle’s three dimensions of ethos: arete, phronesis, and eunoia. It explores both the balance among these dimensions and the rhetorical strategies through which they are discursively realized. Specifically, drawing on Herman’s typology, the study examines an interplay between direct (said) and indirect (shown) ethos as it manifests itself through the ethotic subtypes: community, contrario, borrowed, confronted, and neutralized. This approach allows one to fully map the rhetorical techniques that shape her character as perceived by the audience. Each ethos dimension was operationalized using clearly defined indicators – specific personal traits drawn from Pew Research Center Report (2024), which the author interprets as expressions of arete, phronesis and eunoia. These traits served as coding criteria for identifying and annotating relevant rhetorical strategies in the speeches, enabling a consistent and replicable method for analyzing ethos-driven appeals and their relationship to Harris’s projected presidential character.  Niniejszy artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób Kamala Harris konstruowała swój charakter retoryczny (etos) w przemówieniach wyborczych podczas kampanii prezydenckiej w 2024 roku, korzystając z perspektywy trzech wymiarów etosu Arystotelesa: arete, phronesis i eunoia.
