Statistical analyses to validate the WHO/ISH risk prediction charts for Sri Lanka
The WHO/ISH (WHO/ International Society of Hypertension) risk prediction charts have been used widely by South East Asian Countries. The WHO/ISH risk prediction charts provide approximate estimates of cardiovascular risk in people who do not have established coronary heart disease, stroke or other atherosclerotic diseases. Based on the 10-year risk of fatal or non-fatal major cardiovascular events according to age, gender, smoking status, systolic blood pressure, presence or absence of diabetes and total serum cholesterol level. However, it has not been validated for the Sri Lankan population. Thus this study was initiated to validate the above mentioned WHO/ISH risk prediction chart for cardiovascular diseases using the database maintained at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya for 10 years (2007 - 2017). The major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are age, gender, higher blood sugar level and higher systolic blood pressure when considered individual effect on cardiovascular(CV) diseases from each risk factor. In both risk prediction methods (risk prediction with serum cholesterol readings and without serum cholesterol readings), the majority of the population had a <10% risk of a fatal or non-fatal cardiovascular event. Risk of cardiovascular diseases in the same population increased with age. Males had a significantly higher cardiovascular risk than females. The risk classification using total serum cholesterol was a better prediction chart than the one without it
PCNA Ubiquitination Is Important, But Not Essential for Translesion DNA Synthesis in Mammalian Cells
Translesion DNA synthesis (TLS) is a DNA damage tolerance mechanism in which specialized low-fidelity DNA polymerases bypass replication-blocking lesions, and it is usually associated with mutagenesis. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae a key event in TLS is the monoubiquitination of PCNA, which enables recruitment of the specialized polymerases to the damaged site through their ubiquitin-binding domain. In mammals, however, there is a debate on the requirement for ubiquitinated PCNA (PCNA-Ub) in TLS. We show that UV-induced Rpa foci, indicative of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) regions caused by UV, accumulate faster and disappear more slowly in Pcna(K164R/K164R) cells, which are resistant to PCNA ubiquitination, compared to Pcna(+/+) cells, consistent with a TLS defect. Direct analysis of TLS in these cells, using gapped plasmids with site-specific lesions, showed that TLS is strongly reduced across UV lesions and the cisplatin-induced intrastrand GG crosslink. A similar effect was obtained in cells lacking Rad18, the E3 ubiquitin ligase which monoubiquitinates PCNA. Consistently, cells lacking Usp1, the enzyme that de-ubiquitinates PCNA exhibited increased TLS across a UV lesion and the cisplatin adduct. In contrast, cells lacking the Rad5-homologs Shprh and Hltf, which polyubiquitinate PCNA, exhibited normal TLS. Knocking down the expression of the TLS genes Rev3L, PolH, or Rev1 in Pcna(K164R/K164R) mouse embryo fibroblasts caused each an increased sensitivity to UV radiation, indicating the existence of TLS pathways that are independent of PCNA-Ub. Taken together these results indicate that PCNA-Ub is required for maximal TLS. However, TLS polymerases can be recruited to damaged DNA also in the absence of PCNA-Ub, and perform TLS, albeit at a significantly lower efficiency and altered mutagenic specificity
Evaluation of the UB-Tree with consideration of sorting
Der Autor erstellte die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit als Mitglied der Mistralgruppe bei FORWISS.Complex business applications like SAP R/3, statistical databases, data warehousing and data mining have created a strong demand for efficiently processing complex queries on huge relational databases. By using the multidimensional index UB-tree as access structure to execute range queries a performance enhancement of factor 10 could be achieved. Additional improvements were carried out by integration in the database system Transbase of TransAction. This thesis analyses the usability of the Z-partitioning of the UB-Tree for query processing and bulk loading. The author of this thesis develops several algorithms that process efficiently a Z-order to a one dimensional order or reverse. The result is an efficient bulk load algorithm (TempTris-Algorithm) as well as a join and group algorithm (Tetris-Algorithm, UBG-Algorithm). These algorithms reduce the I/O-cost for the sort phase at least of 50% according to the external sorting. For each algorithm a cost model is presented. The author presents performance measurements that proved our predicted speed up factor. The performance measurements are conducted on artificial data as well as on the TPC-H benchmark. To show the potential impact on real database scenarios, measurements were performed on a real data warehouse from the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK). This thesis concludes with a new processing technique of the CUBE-operator and the impact on the relational algebra. The author develops the results of this thesis as a member of the research group MISTRAL at FORWISS
Effektivität und Effizienz von Online-Hilfesystemen in deutschen Universitäts-OPACs
Today, almost always Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) are the only way to access library collections, but practical experience shows that users have problems dealing with electronic catalogues. The author therefore recommends that any good OPAC needs an elaborated online help system. The present master thesis surveys implemented online help systems in German university OPACs and gives a critical discussion. Beyond the variety of help texts, the author also includes help systems like spell check, search filters for results and recommender. On one hand, the analysis is based on a function-related classification of those help systems and on the other, the introduction of the terms effectiveness and efficiency serve as parameters to determine the usefulness of a help system. As a result, the author presents basic principles for an efficient help system that are based on the findings of this master thesis
Physical dance performance: An investigation into the development of a performance technique based on the integration of certain Korean dance technique and contemporary Western styles of dance and physical theatre
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 04/10/2001.This development of a performer practice that integrates elements of traditional Korean dance technique and Western forms of physical theatre and contemporary dance is based on an approach to internal understanding and external execution. Central to the work is the concept of body energy, or Ki. This ancient Eastern term is translated into a contemporary practice that enables a performer to engage mental and physical training. Breath and the use of breath in performing are the principal means of achieving this level of engagement

ABSTRACT This research seeks to study measures and hampering factors in terms of implementation of economic rights of a creator in agreement of book publishing in UB Press and Instrans Publishing and to study protection for economic rights of the creator. The agreement contains clausal which regulates the economic rights especially regarding royalty and right conveyance. However, the clausal does not seem to protect the economic rights owned by the creator and it is not relevant to the provisions regulated in Act concerning Copyright. The author employed empirical juridical research method along with socio-juridical approach. Primary and secondary materials were obtained from interviews, literature reviews and documentation, followed by descriptive qualitative analysis of the materials, aimed to provide easier data interpretation and to allow easier understanding of the data. The aims of this research based on the research problems are to 1) find out measures and impeding factors regarding implementation of economic rights of creator in publication book agreement in UB Press and Instrans Publishing, 2) reveal that legal protection given to economic rights of the creator is preventive one. Unmasking biases in design education
This paper presents two master graduation design projects that address unconscious biases (UB) in the context of design education related to two topics: gender and skin colour. In addition to their sensitivity to exclusion and injustice, two design students brought in their analytical, design research and creativity skills to find solutions for design education. The projects revealed UB regarding the two topics of both teachers and students. The databases with examples from the real world and a poster campaign helped them to unlock these biases, and to understand that implications of prejudice are critical. The developed model, method, and guidelines provided them with lenses to discover biases, and also to have opportunities to find solutions by design. Evaluation of training material showed the need to have a language to talk about these sensitive topics in a nuanced way. Finally, these cases show the possibility of involving students in the development of curricula that strive to unmask biases.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Design Aesthetic
