This work analyses the novel El album de Amada Díaz by Ricardo Orozco, with the goal to present from a different perspective, the eyes of its protagonist, Amada Díaz, Porfirios daughter, the two most relevant historical periods in Mexico: La Revolución and El Porfiriato. In other words, the novel does not seek only unification and re-signification of both periods, instead, the author manages a reconstruction of Mexico City, which was silenced by the absolutist voice of the patriarchal groups.

Saudadades da Minha Terra Amada: Brazilian Immigrants in Utah

    No full text
“We are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but not quite knowing what or where home is,” author Madeleine L’engle once wrote (L’engle 1993). The Portuguese language has a word for this feeling - saudade. Saudade is hard to describe in English, but it is often described as a feeling of longing, or nostalgia that is supposedly characteristic of the Brazilian temperament. Brazilian immigrants are familiar with this feeling. Though generally grateful for new opportunities, they often describe the saudades that they have for their terra amada, or “beloved homeland,” after coming to America. Saudades are not reserved for people with Portuguese ancestry, however. Anyone who has lived away from home, or traveled, or has simply grown up, has experienced saudades for people and experiences they have left behind. If we reflect on the things for which we feel saudades, we can understand what matters most to us, and this self-reflection helps build our self-identity. By reflecting on the saudades that we share with others, we can become more empathetic, generous, and kind to those who may be different than us. The goal of this project is to increase empathy and focus on individual experiences of Brazilian immigrants in Cache Valley. Unfortunately, due to discrepancies in data and lack of understanding, the Brazilian population in America, and Utah in particular, is vastly underestimated and misunderstood. I interviewed four Brazilian immigrants living in Utah in the hopes of sharing their stories to help educate the public on the unique Latino community that we have in Utah. I compiled the interviews into a short radio piece on saudade to be aired on Utah Public Radio, in the hopes that increased knowledge will lead to increased empathy and understanding towards the Brazilian community and immigrants in general

Medeia escrava. Sobre Amada de Toni Morrison

    No full text
The essay proposes a lecture of Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved, keeping the focus on the evident resemblance that exists between the story written by the contemporary author and the classical myth of Medea, and highlighting the distinctions of each one. The comparison between the two protagonists has already been drawn, more than once, and it is not the first time that a novel, whose protagonist is a woman who has killed her own offspring is compared to the mythical Greek personage. Women’s appeal to the horrible infanticide as a reaction to a tragic situation has been recurrent throughout history and throughout stories. And it is in the dialectic between reality and fiction that it is possible to notice the first big different among the two narratives. While Medea is a mythical character, Sethe – the character created by Toni Morrison – is a fiction based on a real person, on Margaret Garner, who has really killed her daughter, and because of this gesture became an important and almost mythical personage in the struggle of North American abolitionists. The second difference to be highlighted lies in the motivation of the act around which the story revolves: Self-love, in one case; maternal love in another. The third and last ma- jor outstanding distinction is directly linked to the first, that is, to the dialectic between fiction and reality. For coming from a story that really happened, the character of Toni Morrison has to face the reaction to her murderous act in the so-called real world, serve sentence in jail and suffer for it in her life. The deus ex-machina solution is reserved for mythical heroines. If there is a god able to save Sethe, it is a quite phenomenal one and goes by the name of Eros.O ensaio traz uma leitura do romance Amada, de Toni Morrison, tendo como foco a evidente semelhança existente entre a história escrita pela autora contemporânea e o mito clássico de Medeia, e ressaltando as distinções de uma em relação a  outra.

    No full text
This work aims to observe the construction of motherhood in a context of slavery in the novels Beloved and A Mercy, by Toni Morrison. At first is outlined a brief contextualization of the analyzed books, taking into consideration elements of the narrative and the importance of the role played by the author. Then, the analysis is directed towards the elaboration of the concept of maternity itself, starting from different perspectives presumed in the narrative. Finally, it\u27s verified the unequal character of the maternal experience by the characters, just as the role of historical resignification played by the novel by confronting the colonizing logic and bringing up debates about race and class still very much discussed in contemporary times.O presente trabalho tem como objetivo observar a construção da maternidade em um contexto de escravidão nos romances Amada e Compaixão de Toni Morrison.
