    Ritratto del poeta, Alessandro Lami

    No full text
Alessandro Lami is the author of a text surely known by those who deal with Lombard art history of the sixteenth century (his Discorso intorno alla scoltura e pittura, published in Cremona, Cristoforo Draconi, 1584, which is actually the praise of the painter Bernardino Campi, excluded by Giorgio Vasari’s Vite). But he is also a poet, the author, in his youth, of a long poem about the most illustrious Cremonese of all times (Sogno non meno piacevole che morale, Cremona, Draconi, 1572) and, in his late age, of a collection of Rime spirituali (Pavia, per gli heredi di Girolamo Bartoli, 1598). His biographical outlines (e.g. dates of birth and death) as well as the main facts of his life, have always been unknown to scholars. To establish some fundamental turning points in his life (thanks both to unpublished archival documentation and to ancient and modern sources) may be useful to better understand his effective role in the career of Bernardino Campi, one of the most important painters in Milan in the mid-16th century.

Compact stars have a crucial role to play in the understanding of ultra dense and isospin asymmetric matter. Born in the extremely bright explosion of a massive star at the last stage of its life, neutron stars can present masses as high as twice the mass of the Sun, in a radius of around ten kilometers, thus gathering matter in the irinterior in extreme conditions of density and gravity. The nuclear physics probed by observing neutron stars is complementary in terms of density and isospin asymmetry to any terrestrial experiment. Multi-messenger astronomy is used to extract information on the interior of neutron stars, their structure and their composition. Connecting the observation of macroscopic parameters to the equation of state of neutron star matter requires a solid understanding of gravitation theories and modelling of the star’s interior. In this thesis, three aspects of dense matter modelling that are essential to understand neutron star properties and its macroscopic features are discussed. The first point discussed is the construction of the equation of state of dense matter for the lowand the high density parts of the neutron star interior. A common practice within the astronuclear physicists community consists in treating the core and the crust of the star with different nuclear models. However, this non-unified treatment of the equation of state results in errors on the macroscopic parameter modeling which are not negligible in the face of current and near future observational precision. In this thesis, the role of non unified equations of state on the modeling of the mass, the radius, the moment of inertia, and the tidalde formability of a cold neutron star is assessed. Moreover, analytical representations of neutron star’s equation of state based on the piecewise polytropic parametrization are provided for more than fifty modern and unified nuclear models. The second subject presented in this thesis concerns the heat sources triggered deep in the crust of accreting neutron stars. The observed thermal relaxation of a few X-ray transients suggests that the standard approximation considering that the crust is entirely made of accreted material may not be valid for neutron stars that have accreted only small amounts of matter. In this manuscript, the equation of state of anaccreting neutron star which is partly made of a global equilibrium crust under compression, and partly of accreted material, is calculated. Heat sources in the compressed crust are determined and compared to the heatsources deposited in the fully accreted crust approximation. The impact of the kinetics of the non equilibrium reactions leading to the crustal heating, which has been neglected in previously established calculations, is calculated for a few shells of the outer layers of accreting crusts. The reaction rate of electron captures leads to the increase of the heat release in the considered shells of the crust. The final point discussed in this thesis concerns a neutrino emission process in the core of neutron stars, referred to as Modified Urca. Establishing emissivity of Urca processes is important to understand the cooling of cold neutron stars, temperature dependent proto-neutron stars or binary merger remnants. Modified Urca combines the weak interaction and the strong interaction. In this thesis, the hadronic part of the Modified Urca process is derived in the frameworkof Thermal Quantum Field theory for finite temperature neutron star matter. A number of common approximations taken for the distribution of nucleons and the nucleon propagators are alleviated. Thesuppression of the Modified Urca process above the threshold of the weak interaction driven Direct Urcaprocess is discussed for different regimes of temperature and densit

Wing pattern resembles to that of the male. Distribution and habitat. This subspecies is known only from well preserved natural forests in mountainous area of Baisha, Changjiang and Dongfang counties on Hainan Island, China. It prefers shrubs adjacent to bare rock in karst landscape or along stream, where its hostplants present. Host plant. The immature of this subspecies is apparently associated with the family Crassulaceae. Kalanchoe integra and Bryophyllum pinnatum, a naturalised plant with African origin, were utilized by larvae in the wild. Immature bionomics. ovum (Fig. 5) is laid singly on the underside of leaf blade. Once hatched, larva bores into leaf of hostplant as leaf miner and feeds on tissue in mesophyll layer (Fig. 6). Larva does not emerge unless the original leaf is completely consumed. Mature larva pupates on the underside of leaf of hostplant (Figs. 7–8). The entire immature stage, from egg to emergence of adult, takes 61–62 days (n=3) under indoor uncontrolled condition. Voltinism. Multivoltine, adult occurs all year round. Etymology. The name of the subspecies is dedicated to Alexander Lam’s family in Boston, USA, for their love and care to the senior author during his undergraduate study in Boston. Diagnosis. The male genitalia (Figs. 9–12) of T. n. lami resembles that of nominate subspecies and T. n. delhiensis in general, with long and tapering uncus, prominent brachium, broad valvae with harpe modified to long spine-shaped projection. The size of T. nyseus lami is similar to T. n. annamitica and both are the smallest among all subspecies. Interestingly, the wing pattern of T. nyseus lami seems like a combination of several other subspecies. First of all, the wavy outer margin of the orange band on upper hindwing and dark marginal ocelli from cell M1 to 2A on underside hindwing are features only found in three eastern subspecies, T. n. metana, T. n. annamitica and T. n. lami. However, dark spots in the middle of discoidal cell is a trait only shared by T. n. macbethi and T. n. lami. Furthermore, T. n. lami is similar to T. n. burmana the most in that the arrangement of distal band of central symmetry system, but all the spots are detached from the band of element “g” as defined by Nijhout (1991). Six distinctive underside patterns, assigned as A to F hereinto, can be identified among the nine subspecies: three subspecies, macbethi (A), burmana (B) and lami (C), have unique pattern and the rest three patterns are shared by three subspecies pairs, nyseus & delhiensis (D); khasiana & assamica (E); metana & annamitica (F), respectively.Published as part of Lo, Yik-Fui Philip, Li, Fei & Ding, Liang, 2017, Description of a new subspecies of Talicada nyseus (Guérin-Méneville, 1843) from Hainan, China (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), with notes on the genus Talicada Moore, 1881, pp. 586-592 in Zootaxa 4269 (4) on pages 587-589, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4269.4.11, http://zenodo.org/record/58280

Neo-Latin Poetry in the Kyivan Poetics: Ukraine in the European Latinitas

    No full text
In this paper the Author illustrates a few Neo-Latin poetical compositions that are found in the poetics manuals of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (17th-18th century). They pertain to the genus demonstrativum (epideictic genre), one of the genres into which oratory and poetry were divided, and the genre that more than others allowed poets to represent human deeds and exemplary specimens of virtue that the pupils could and should follow. The importance of the genus demonstrativum becomes clear when one takes into account the main end of poetry in the Mohylan poetics, that is the education of pious men and loyal subjects. The author therefore analyzes a few panegyric poems that praise the person and the activity of Rafajil Zaborovs’kyj (1676-1747), one of the most generous benefactors of the Mohyla Academy in the 18th century. The analysis is particularly focused on the rhetorical strategies and the lexical tools adopted to carry out the praise of Zaborovs’kyj. The celebration of this eminent representative of 18th century Kyivan culture, as that of other eminent characters of the time, witnesses to the foundation of a new ‘Parnassus’ on the hills of Kyiv and to the insertion of the Kyiv-Mohylan Academy and Ukrainian culture in the European Latinitas

Modified Urca neutrino emissivity at finite temperature

    No full text
International audienceCharged current neutrino-nucleon reactions, generally called Urca processes, are crucial actors of a neutron star's thermal evolution. The so-called direct processes show a pronounced threshold under which the reaction is kinematically suppressed. This suppression does not apply to "modified" Urca processes which involve interaction with an additional nucleon. Calculations of the modified Urca neutrino rates were established for cold neutron star matter and for dilute hot matter, in both cases under strong assumptions. In this paper, we revise the calculations of the modified Urca neutrino rates for dense and hot matter, and for different compositions. We study the influence of different approximations used in previous computations. We derive expressions for the rates of modified Urca neutrino emissivity within thermal field theory and perform the phase space integration numerically using mainly importance sampling Monte-Carlo techniques. The neutrino emissivity of modified and direct processes are established and compared. We find in particular that the modified Urca process is not necessarily suppressed with respect to the direct process above the threshold of the latter at moderate densities and temperatures, in contrast to what is generally assumed. Numerical results are confirmed by an estimation of the ratio of modified to direct Urca rates with a simple analytic approximation, thereby showing the regimes of suppression for the modified processes depending on temperature and density. These results show that modified Urca rates have to be considered carefully upon evaluating neutrino opacities in dense and warm matter

Guru and Messiah : on the first yoga handbook in Polish language : Wincenty Lutosławski’s The development of the power of will by means of psychophysical exercises (1909)

This chapter provides insight into the wide range of intellectual, social, and spiritual activities of Wincenty Lutosławski (1863-1954), one of the most eminent Polish personalities of his time. An outstanding philosopher and polyglot proficient in international networking, he was a prolific author of books in several languages, among them the first yoga manual to be published in Polish (1909). The principal focus of the analysis is on Lutosławski’s adaptation of yoga in the context of a specific understanding of Polish Romantic poetry following the tradition of the messianist religious leader Andrzej Towiański (1799-1878). Exploring these unique interdependencies, the chapter constitutes a contribution to the history of modern yoga at the beginning of the twentieth century and sheds light on the emergence of Polish neo-messianism

The author takes the 2019 Nobel Prize laureate's lecture delivered in Stockholm as a key to his mindset as a writer and his literary works. Analysing the multilingual aspect of the speech in combination with the novel Repetition (Wiederholung, 1986), she reveals Handke as an author against the background of the Slovene borderlands. Using her expertise in religious studies, she approaches the spiritual dimension of Handke's works, elucidating his ingenious understanding of messianism

Global Coronal Plasma Diagnostics Based on Multi-slit EUV Spectroscopy

    No full text
Full-disk spectroscopic observations of the solar corona are highly desired to forecast solar eruptions and their impact on planets and to uncover the origin of solar wind. In this paper, we introduce a new multi-slit design (5 slits) to obtain extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra simultaneously. The selected spectrometer wavelength range (184-197 \r{A}) contains several bright EUV lines that can be used for spectral diagnostics. The multi-slit approach offers an unprecedented way to efficiently obtain the global spectral data but the ambiguity from different slits should be resolved. Using a numerical simulation of the global corona, we primarily concentrate on the optimization of the disambiguation process, with the objective of extracting decomposed spectral information of six primary lines. This subsequently facilitates a comprehensive series of plasma diagnostics, including density (Fe XII 195.12/186.89 \r{A}), Doppler velocity (Fe XII 193.51 \r{A}), line width (Fe XII 193.51 \r{A}) and temperature diagnostics (Fe VIII 185.21 \r{A}, Fe X 184.54 \r{A}, Fe XI 188.22 \r{A}, Fe XII 193.51 \r{A}). We find a good agreement between the forward modeling parameters and the inverted results at the initial eruption stage of a coronal mass ejection, indicating the robustness of the decomposition method and its immense potential for global monitoring of the solar corona.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables.
