Which Poverty Line? A Response to Reddy
Some years ago a consensus emerged in the development community on the idea of an international poverty line of around 1 a day poverty rate by 2015. In a recent IPC One Pager, ?Are Estimates of Poverty in Latin America Reliable??, Sanjay Reddy asserts that this poverty line is ?arbitrary? and ?unreliable.? He feels that the line is too low to reflect well the cost of not being considered poor in Latin America.(...)Some years ago a consensus emerged in the development community on the idea of an international poverty line of
Teacher formative assessment: the missing link in response to intervention
Response to Intervention (RtI) focuses on the assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring of student academic performance and social behavior. Despite requiring highly-qualified personnel for successful implementation, the implementation of Rtl has not focused on applying its foundational principles towards promoting teacher effectiveness through assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring of teacher classroom practice. Compounding this problem is the lack of availability of reliable and valid teacher assessments to apply in an Rtl model for teacher professional development. This chapter provides a rationale for applying RtI principles to teacher professional development and how teacher formative assessment can improve educator effectiveness, student learning, and social behaviors. The Classroom Strategies Scale (CSS, Reddy & Dudek, 2014), a new multidimensional assessment of instructional and behavioral management practices is discussed as an example of one promising tool for promoting teachers professional development within an Rtl model. We offer a synthesis of the theory, research, and evidence of reliability and validity of the CSS. The application of teacher formative assessment in job-embedded professional development/coaching models for schools is discussed. Finally, implications for practice and research are outlined.Peer reviewe
Escape from Insignificance: How Moroccan youths radicalize in Europe
In this Working Paper, Lalla Amina Drhimeur, a member of the Prime Youth ERC Research undertaken by the European Institute of Istanbul Bilgi University, elaborates on the ways in which Moroccan-origin youth in Europe radicalize over the last few decades. The author has compiled a very nuanced and detailed body of existing literature on the radicalization processes of self-identified Muslims in Europe with a specific focus on the Moroccan-origin youth residing in European cities. She successfully reveals socio-economic, ideological, and psychological drivers of radicalization as well as the role of migrant-sending states (i.e., Morocco in this case) and migrant-receiving states. This paper derives from the ongoing EU-funded research for the “PRIME Youth” project conducted under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Prof. Dr. Ayhan Kaya, and funded by the European Research Council with the Agreement Number 785934
A critical and textual history of Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh, with two editions of “Paradise and the Peri.”
The purpose of this three-part thesis is to construct a study which outlines the composition, publication and reception history of Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh, and to create two closely linked scholarly editions of “Paradise and the Peri.” The first part of the thesis is a Critical and Textual History of Lalla Rookh. This study includes an examination of Thomas Moore’s compositional practices from the beginnings of his work on Lalla Rookh in 1811 to its publication in 1817. There follows a thorough assessment of the circumstances of the work’s publication in various editions by Longman between 1817 and 1880, and commentary on the significant changes to the publication format and text during this period. The critical reception of Lalla Rookh upon its publication is also discussed, and the final chapter examines a variety of different media and formats which adapted Lalla Rookh, and contributed to its reception and its position in the cultural consciousness of the nineteenth century. This Critical and Textual History takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining a literary text, incorporating perspectives from Literary Theory, Bibliography and Textual Studies, and Book History to present a holistic picture of the literary, publishing and cultural significance of Lalla Rookh. The second part of the thesis comprises an annotated edition of “Paradise and the Peri,” which contains all of Moore’s original textual notes as well as the annotations of the current editor, bibliographies and an appendix of contextual information on the sources that the author used in preparing the text. This edition is informed by traditional editorial practices, and recognises that scholars and general readers often require an edition in this format, without the features that the third part of this thesis offers. The third part is a hypermedia genetic edition of Moore’s “Paradise and the Peri” which is encoded in XML to the recommended standards of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI P5). This edition is based on the three extant manuscript drafts of Lalla Rookh, its corrected proof copy and its first edition, and its aim is, on the one hand, to provide the user with a Documentary Edition of Lalla Rookh, but also to assist the user in tracing the textual development of the work and examining Moore’s compositional practices. The edition includes facsimile reproductions of the manuscript drafts and printed texts along with annotated transcriptions; these are encoded and displayed in a manner that amounts to a genetic edition, enabling the user to dynamically examine the text and compare textual variants of individual verse lines from any point in the edition. This is accompanied by a document detailing the Editorial Methodology and Encoding Standards that were undertaken in preparing the edition
"Novel of Images". Lalla Romano and the Autobiographical Phototext
The thesis examines the role of photography, initially in its social use, then moving on to its presence in literature, the function of the image within the text and how the visual part is linked to the verbal one.
After this analysis the focus shifts to the life of Lalla Romano and in particular to one of her works, the autobiographical phototext entitled: “Novel of figures”. In it, the author recounts her childhood through photographs accompanied by short comments.
It is a novel through images in which the reader must pay attention to both the images and the words, as they hold the same importance and work together to create a new meaning
a author’s trip to Greece with her husband in
1957, the subjective dimension prevails over the
objective description of the locations she visited:
we are not so much faced with travel literature as
with the pages of a diary where, as noted by Mon tale, the author reports her private confessions.
For Romano, Greece represents both the different
(the seascapes, rocky and sunny, are an absolute
otherness for her, compared to the mountains of
Cuneo) and the identical: unexpectedly, in the lo cation she visited, the author sees traces of events
she has already experienced. Seen up close Greece
overlaps with the Greece represented in the books,
where the author's cultural roots are found: dur ing the journey the image of bookish Greece is torn
apart, not in a unpainful way, to give space for a
Greece made of stone, solid, whose beauty, says
Romano, is as real as bread

Advancing instructional coaching with teacher formative assessment and input
With increased attention to teacher quality and accountability, instructional coaching has emerged as a popular form of teacher support and professional development in literacy and other areas of instruction. Despite significant interest from school personnel, researchers, and federal funders, there remains a lack of consensus around the key components and activities of instructional coaching. To that end, studies that use quantitative and qualitative methods can offer valuable information on the development and validation of coaching practices. This chapter briefly describes the Classroom Strategies Assessment System Coaching Model that draws on the adult learning and formative assessment literature. We offer key observations of educators' knowledge of and experience in instructional coaching from focus groups conducted with teachers in high-poverty, urban elementary schools. Directions for practice and research are discussed.Peer reviewe

Decentralized Combinatorial Auctions for Dynamic and Large-Scale Collaborative Vehicle Routing
While collaborative vehicle routing has a significant potential to reduce transportation costs and emissions, current approaches are limited in terms of applicability, unrealistic assumptions, and low scalability. Centralized planning generally assumes full information and full control, which is often unacceptable for individual carriers. Combinatorial auctions with one central auctioneer overcome this problem and provide good results, but are limited to small static problems. Multi-agent approaches have been proposed for large dynamic problems, but do not directly take the advantages of bundling into account. We propose an approach where participants can individually outsource orders, while a platform can suggest bundles of the offered requests to improve solutions. We consider bundles of size 2 and 3 and show that travel costs can be decreased with 1.7% compared to the scenario with only single order auctions. Moreover, experiments on data from a Dutch transportation platform company show that large-scale collaboration through a platform results in system-wide savings of up to 79% for 1000 carriers.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Transport Engineering and LogisticsAlgorithmic
