This text is a transcription of presentation made by Dr. iur. Tonio Borg at the meeting of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals (http://www.animalwelfareintergroup.eu/) to the European Parliament on September 18, 2013. In the text, the author outlines a list of challenges and proposals in relation to improving animal welfare in the EU. The speaker highlights the need to improve education, enforcement and a reorientation of focus in order to achieve 'a more holistic' approach to animal welfare. The approach is intended to be proactive and preventive rather than a more reactive approach which has frequently been in force. The author stresses that this new approach would favor animal welfare while improving Europe's competitiveness in agricultural markets, and help foster cohesiveness within the Unio

Slumber under divine protection: from vague pagan hopes to Christian belief

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from de Gruyter via the link in this record. This paper focusses on the most popular Christian and non-Christian images from the funerary realm in order to explore the relationship between Christian and non-Christian Roman art, and to discuss methodological issues related to modern attempts at establishing their meaninng. At a methodological level, it argues for an approach that cautions against giving primacy to texts, and that takes the images and their language seriously as a source for a better understanding of ancient thought in a range of contexts and across a range of lay people. At a thematic level, it argues that Christians and non-Christians shared key ideas about what may come after death. They hoped for peaceful rest, for delivery from the toil and pain of earthly existence, and for divine presence and protection. This state was often illustrated by sleeping figures, who constituted the single most popular narrative subject in both Christian and non-Christian funerary art

In 'Modern slavery: a comparative study of the definition of trafficking in persons' Dominika Borg Jansson discusses why, despite international anti-trafficking efforts, there are so few trafficking convictions worldwide. In an easily accessible language, the author explains why international legal harmonization in this area has been difficult. Making use of the concept of legal transplants, Dominika Borg Jansson compares experiences from Sweden, Poland and Russia offering insights into especially Russian legislation that are not widely available. The problems concerning the implementation of the international definition of trafficking are here divided into country-specific challenges and obstacles attributable to the original source. Jansson also addresses the effectiveness of criminalization of trafficking and offers suggestions on how future trafficking legislation might be framed
