This thesis was started with the aim of compiling a thematic catalogue of Armin Kaufmann’s work, of collecting a biographical survey of his life and of illustrating his creative work as it appeared to his contemporaries. The music material found in the inheritance of Armin Kaufmann is partly available in the “Musiksammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek” (collection of music belonging to the Austrian National Library) and served as the basis of the thematic catalogue. Another part is available in the “Armin Kaufmann Dokumentationszentrum” (Armin Kaufmann documentation centre) in Stift Ossiach (monastery of Ossiach, Carinthia), which was inaugurated in summer 2009; these sources have also been considered. All “incipits” were not just reproduced mechanically but have been produced personally by the author of this thesis. Thus it was possible to locate obvious mistakes in some beats of the “incipits” – even in printed works – and to correct them in the reproduction. A catalogue of his works arranged according to opus numbers, produced in 1992 by Mrs. Leonore Endreß in commemoration of Armin Kaufmann’s 90th birthday and edited by the Austrian National Library “Musikalische Dokumentation”, was an important basis for preparing further systematic catalogues. Incorrect details discovered by the author of this thesis in the course of his research have also been corrected. The biographical information was gained from a family chronicle dating back to 1684 that was kindly placed at my disposal by Mrs. Elisabeth Kaufmann-Troppina, daughter of Armin Kaufmann, as well as from documents and diaries. Conversations with members of the family also helped to clear up details of his curriculum vitae. A great number of concert programmes document the performances of his works. As far as they were available they have been listed chronologically. From these programmes it was also possible to compile a catalogue of performers. 1696 How contemporaries, especially experts, reacted to the works of Armin Kaufmann becomes visible in the great number of critical reviews which, however, have mostly been reduced to passages concerning Armin Kaufmann. Forming an opinion on these articles is left to the reader. Last but not least: abstracts of memorial addresses have been included in my thesi

Three-Dimensional Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Arm Therapy Robot (ARMin)

    No full text
Rehabilitation robots have become an important tool to complement rehabilitation training in patients with neurological disorders such as stroke and spinal cord injury. Arm rehabilitation robots can create a motivational, activity-based environment supporting an intensive rehabilitation training with frequent and numerous repetitions. Therefore, robots have the potential to improve the rehabilitation process in patients with lesions of the central nervous system. In this chapter, the three-dimensional, multi-degree-of-freedom ARMin arm robot, and the related ChARMin and Armeo Power robots, are presented. The devices have an exoskeleton structure that enables the training of activities of daily living. Patient-responsive control strategies assist the patient only as much as needed and stimulate patient activity. This chapter covers the mechanical setup, the therapy modes, and the clinical evaluation of the exoskeleton robots. It concludes with an outlook on ongoing developments

ARMin: a robot for patient-cooperative arm therapy

Task-oriented, repetitive and intensive arm training can enhance arm rehabilitation in patients with paralyzed upper extremities due to lesions of the central nervous system. There is evidence that the training duration is a key factor for the therapy progress. Robot-supported therapy can improve the rehabilitation allowing more intensive training. This paper presents the kinematics, the control and the therapy modes of the arm therapy robot ARMin. It is a haptic display with semi-exoskeleton kinematics with four active and two passive degrees of freedom. Equipped with position, force and torque sensors the device can deliver patient-cooperative arm therapy taking into account the activity of the patient and supporting him/her only as much as needed. The haptic display is combined with an audiovisual display that is used to present the movement and the movement task to the patient. It is assumed that the patient-cooperative therapy approach combined with a multimodal display can increase the patient's motivation and activity and, therefore, the therapeutic progress

    Compendium of theoretical physics

    No full text
Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics comprise the canonical undergraduate curriculum of theoretical physics. In Compendium of Theoretical Physics, Armin Wachter and Henning Hoeber offer a concise, rigorous and structured overview that will be invaluable for students preparing for their qualifying examinations, readers needing a supplement to standard textbooks, and research or industrial physicists seeking a bridge between extensive textbooks and formula books. The authors take an axiomatic-deductive approach to each topic, starting the discussion of each theory with its fundamental equations. By subsequently deriving the various physical relationships and laws in logical rather than chronological order, and by using a consistent presentation and notation throughout, they emphasize the connections between the individual theories. The reader’s understanding is then reinforced with exercises, solutions and topic summaries. Unique Features: Every topic is reviewed axiomatically-deductively and then reinforced through exercises, solutions and summaries Each subchapter ends with a set of applications, making the Compendium an ideal review of theoretical physics for physicists working in industry or research A Mathematical Appendix covers vector operations, integral theorems, partial differential quotients, complete function systems, Fourier analysis, Bessel functions, spherical Bessel functions, Legendre functions, Legendre polynomials and spherical harmonics Armin Wachter holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) / Research Centre of Jülich, Germany. His research interests include theoretical elementary particle physics, heavy quark physics, heavy meson spectroscopy, algorithms on parallel computers, and lattice gauge theory. He is presently writing a textbook on relativistic quantum mechanics for Springer. Henning Hoeber received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and has since held research positions at the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) / Research Centre of Jülich, Germany and the University of Wuppertal, Germany. His research interests include elementary particle physics, lattice gauge theory, and computational physics, and since 1998 he has done extensive work in the fields of seismic processing, time series analysis, statistical and transform methods for seismic signal processing, and elastic wave propagation
