This article shows the first results of a research project that attempts to analyse the relations between the business groups, the institutional framework and the economic development in 20th century Spain. It employs a microeconomic perspective, a historical-institutional analysis and private archival sources. The article focuses on the businesses of the Aznar family from 1937 (when they took over the management of the firms that formerly belonged to the Sota and Aznar group) to 1983 (when Naviera Aznar, the most important firm of the group, broke out and ceased business). Out of this empirical evidence, the article tries to underline the consequences that an industrial organization based on business groups and on an institutional framework characterized by the State's extreme interventionism and discretionality had on the capabilities and the competitiveness of Spanish firms and industries, and, by extension, on the economic development of Spain during the Franco's regime and the first Governments of the transition to democracy.Publicad
Assessing the eco-efficiency of inter-municipal waste management services in France
International audienceWe assess the eco-efficiency of French inter-municipal cooperation entities in charge of waste management. We employ a conditional order-m approach to (i) estimate their eco-efficiency considering variables characterizing their environmental context, (ii) evaluate the effect of these contextual variables on the eco-efficiency. Our results demonstrate that the population size, the type of area (e.g., tourist, rural), and the waste pricing systems significantly influence eco-efficiency. These findings underscore the importance of tailoring local waste management policies to the specific characteristics and available resources of each area. They provide valuable insights for local authorities seeking to enhance eco-efficiency and optimize waste management practices. © 2025 The Author

One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Spain: Nationalism and the Rejection of the Morisco "Other"
Degree awarded: Ph.D. Spanish. The Catholic University of AmericaBefore August 8, 2013, this dissertation can be viewed by CUA users only. [6 months embargo]In the latter half of the sixteenth century, Spain's Catholic rulers faced a problem of their own making: having forced Spain's remaining Muslim population to convert to Christianity, these rulers now suspected that these converts, known as Moriscos, were not faithful to the crown or to their newly-adopted Catholic faith. Decades of political and theological debate concerning the Moriscos' ensued, only to be resolved when King Philip III, in 1609, finally determined to expel the Moriscos, aiming to rid the Iberian Peninsula of their purportedly destabilizing influence. The decision was not universally popular, and out of concern that the expulsion could be undone, several clerics and men of political influence became apologists for the massive deportation campaign, justifying the expulsion and glorifying its results. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how the treatises of the apologists Pedro Aznar Cardona (Expulsión justificada de los Moriscos españoles), Damián Fonseca (Justa expulsión de los moriscos de España), Marcos de Guadalajara y Javier (Memorable expulsión y justísimo destierro de los Moriscos de España and Prodición y destierro de los moriscos de Castilla hasta la Valle de Ricote), and Jaime Bleda (Crónica de los Moros de España) provide a foundation for the formation of a Spanish national identity based on a shared Catholic faith. This study specifically examines the apologists' rhetorical strategies and goals, exploring the ways in which they seek to establish Morisco otherness as a means of reinforcing the institutional hegemony of the Catholic faith. The apologists hope to persuade their Catholic audience of the risks to their physical and spiritual safety if Moriscos were to return to the Peninsula, thereby safeguarding their ideal Spanish Catholic nation from future contamination.Made available in DSpace on 2013-02-08T16:05:56Z (GMT). Pyrethroids levels in paddy field water under Mediterranean conditions: measurements and distribution modelling
[EN] The cultivation of rice (Oriza sativa L.) under Mediterranean conditions regularly requires the use of
treated wastewater due to shortage of freshwater. As a consequence, the intensification of rice production to supply the uprising demand of grain could break the stability between agriculture and environment. In this work, we studied the occurrence and distribution of pyrethroids in surface water and groundwater collected during two periods (flooding and dry soil conditions) in paddy fields located in the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Pyrethroids were detected at concentrations ranging from 14 to
1450 ng L-1 in surface water and from 6 to 833 ng L-1 in groundwater. The results obtained were valuated statistically using principal component analysis, and differences between both sampling campaigns were found, with lower concentrations of the target compounds during the flooding sampling event. Moreover, a geographic information system program was used to represent a model distribution of the obtained results, showing wastewater treatment plants as the main sources of contamination and the decrease of pyrethroids during flooding condition when water flows over the paddy fields. The impact of these compounds on water quality was discussed.Authors wish to thank INIA for the predoctoral fellowship (R. Voxel-based analysis: Roadmap for clinical translation
International audienceVoxel-based analysis (VBA) allows the full, 3-dimensional, dose distribution to be considered in radiotherapy outcome analysis. This provides new insights into anatomical variability of pathophysiology and radiosensitivity by removing the need for a priori definition of organs assumed to drive the dose response associated with patient outcomes. This approach may offer powerful biological insights demonstrating the heterogeneity of the radiobiology across tissues and potential associations of the radiotherapy dose with further factors. As this methodological approach becomes established, consideration needs to be given to translating VBA results to clinical implementation for patient benefit. Here, we present a comprehensive roadmap for VBA clinical translation. Technical validation needs to demonstrate robustness to methodology, where clinical validation must show generalisability to external datasets and link to a plausible pathophysiological hypothesis. Finally, clinical utility requires demonstration of potential benefit for patients in order for successful translation to be feasible. For each step on the roadmap, key considerations are discussed and recommendations provided for best practice. © 2023 The Author(s
Role of Oxidative Stress on the Etiology and Pathophysiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Its Relation with the Enteric Nervous System
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting motor neurons in the spinal cord, cerebral cortex, and medulla oblongata. Most patients present a clinical phenotype of classic ALS—with predominant atrophy, muscle weakness, and fasciculations—and survival of 3 to 5 years following diagnosis. In the present review, we performed a literature search to provide an update on the etiology and pathophysiological mechanisms involved in ALS. There are two types of ALS: the familial form with genetic involvement, and the sporadic form with a multifactorial origin. ALS pathophysiology is characterized by involvement of multiple processes, including oxidative stress, glutamate excitotoxicity, and neuroinflammation. Moreover, it is proposed that conditioning risk factors affect ALS development, such as susceptibility to neurodegeneration in motor neurons, the intensity of performed physical activity, and intestinal dysbiosis with involvement of the enteric nervous system, which supports the existing theories of disease generation. To improve patients’ prognosis and survival, it is necessary to further deepen our understanding of the etiopathogenesis of ALS
