OXIDATION OF SILICON - THE VLSI GATE DIELECTRIC
Silicon dominates the semiconductor industry for good reasons. One factor is the stable, easily formed, insulating oxide, which aids high performance and allows practical processing. How well can these virtues survive as new demands are made on integrity, on smallness of feature sizes and other dimensions, and on constraints on processing and manufacturing methods? These demands make it critical to identify, quantify and predict the key controlling growth and defect processes on an atomic scale.The combination of theory and novel experiments (isotope methods, electronic noise, spin resonance, pulsed laser atom probes and other desorption methods, and especially scanning tunnelling or atomic force microscopies) provide tools whose impact on models is just being appreciated. We discuss the current unified model for silicon oxidation, which goes beyond the traditional descriptions of kinetic and ellipsometric data by explicitly addressing the issues raised in isotope experiments. The framework is still the Deal-Grove model, which provides a phenomenology to describe the major regimes of behaviour, and gives a base from which the substantial deviations can be characterized. In this model, growth is limited by diffusion and interfacial reactions operating in series. The deviations from Deal-Grove are most significant for just those first tens of atomic layers of oxide which are critical for the ultra-thin oxide layers now demanded. Several features emerge as important. First is the role of stress and stress relaxation. Second is the nature of the oxide closest to the Si, both its defects and its differences from the amorphous stoichiometric oxide further out, whether in composition, in network topology, or otherwise. Thirdly, we must consider the charge states of both fixed and mobile species. In thin films with very different dielectric constants, image terms can be important; these terms affect interpretation of spectroscopies, the injection of oxidant species and relative defect stabilities. This has added importance now that P-b concentrations have been correlated with interfacial stress. This raises further issues about the perfection of the oxide random network and the incorporation of interstitial species like molecular oxygen.Finally, the roles of contamination, particles, metals, hydrocarbons etc are important, as is interface roughness. These features depend on pre-gate oxide cleaning and define the Si surface that is to be oxidized which may have an influence on the features listed above
Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV
The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region
The Sofield-Millar operation in osteogenesis imperfecta
We have reviewed the results of the Sofield-Millar operation on 58 long bones in ten patients. If more than three osteotomies were undertaken the time to union of the bone was significantly prolonged (p< 0.001) with significant thinning of the bone (p< 0.02). We have used a modified technique in order to minimise surgical trauma and devascularisation of the bone. The rod is introduced under the control of an image-intensifier. Small surgical exposures are made only at the sites of corrective wedge osteotomies. The number of osteotomies is kept to the minimum. </jats:p
Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′
First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)
Measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B0 -> J/ψ KS0 decays
This Letter reports a measurement of the CP violation observables SJ/ψK0S and CJ/ψK0S in the decay channel B0→J/ψK0S performed with 1.0 fb−1 of pp collisions at s√=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The fit to the data yields SJ/ψK0S=0.73±0.07(stat)±0.04(syst) and CJ/ψK0S=0.03±0.09(stat)±0.01(syst). Both values are consistent with the current world averages and within

Outside the net: Kiribati and the knowledge economy
The Information and Communications Technologies of the last three decades have revolutionized the way in which societies and economies interact on both a global and a domestic scale, with concomitant impacts on the ways in which business is conducted and people and communities interact. A series of studies undertaken by the World Bank from 1997 to the present suggest that those countries which do not take up to the fullest possible extent the technologies now available and enter what has been termed the 'Knowledge Economy' will be 'left behind' in the same way as the Third World which did not experience the industrial revolution. Two of the distinguishing characteristics of the Knowledge Economy however are that first, unlike the industrial revolution it does not require the same massive injections of capital into physical plant and R&D, and second, that countries may 'leapfrog' into the Knowledge Economy without having gone through industrialization. Many such developing countries (Mauritius is a prime example) have taken that leap and are now functioning effectively in and with cyberspace. However, not all countries are participating equally in this interconnected world and this paper examines one country which has not taken up the challenge of the Knowledge Economy -the Republic of Kiribati which straddles the equator in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. Kiribati is an island nation, and its people are of the sea, with fishing as the mainstay of their subsistence lifestyle. Nets are part of every-day life - but the Net is outside their world. It is suggested that the combination of a conservative culture and a paternalistic form of government -itself a reflection of Micronesian cultural values -combine to create an environment where ITC is not pursued actively - or indeed at all. There are significant cultural and socio-political barriers that inhibit the uptake of ITC and some of these factors are explored in this paper
Acute Ethanol Administration Rapidly Increases Phosphorylation of Conventional Protein Kinase C in Specific Mammalian Brain Regions in Vivo
Background
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of isoenzymes that regulate a variety of functions in the central nervous system including neurotransmitter release, ion channel activity, and cell differentiation. Growing evidence suggests that specific isoforms of PKC influence a variety of behavioral, biochemical, and physiological effects of ethanol in mammals. The purpose of this study was to determine whether acute ethanol exposure alters phosphorylation of conventional PKC isoforms at a threonine 674 (p-cPKC) site in the hydrophobic domain of the kinase, which is required for its catalytic activity.
Methods
Male rats were administered a dose range of ethanol (0, 0.5, 1, or 2 g/kg, intragastric) and brain tissue was removed 10 minutes later for evaluation of changes in p-cPKC expression using immunohistochemistry and Western blot methods.
Results
Immunohistochemical data show that the highest dose of ethanol (2 g/kg) rapidly increases p-cPKC immunoreactivity specifically in the nucleus accumbens (core and shell), lateral septum, and hippocampus (CA3 and dentate gyrus). Western blot analysis further showed that ethanol (2 g/kg) increased p-cPKC expression in the P2 membrane fraction of tissue from the nucleus accumbens and hippocampus. Although p-cPKC was expressed in numerous other brain regions, including the caudate nucleus, amygdala, and cortex, no changes were observed in response to acute ethanol. Total PKC? immunoreactivity was surveyed throughout the brain and showed no change following acute ethanol injection
