Carine Lounissi, Thomas Paine and the French Revolution.
Carine Lounissi’s study of the ‘French Paine’ is a highly valuable and necessary contribution to the wealth of scholarly work devoted to the self-styled citizen of the world. The author builds on her more theoretical study of Thomas Paine’s writings, published in 2012, to construct a contextualized portrait of the international revolutionary during the years he spent in France as an observer, commentator and agent of the French Revolution between 1787 and 1802. In doing so, she has addressed ..
Anarchival Practices
Launch of the publication series ‘Worlding Public Cultures: The Arts and Social Innovation’, featuring Carine Zaayman (author of the premiering WPC book, Anarchival Practices: The Clanwilliam Arts Project as Re-imagining Custodianship of the Past, WPC / ICI Berlin Press 2022) in conversation with Wesley C. Hogan In this chapbook, Carine Zaayman instantiates the Anarchive as a means to reimagine how custodianship of the past is practiced. The Anarchive constellates archives and the absences that attend them in a manner that both centralizes the vastness of absence, and leaves it unreconstructed. The chapbook articulates the implications of the Anarchival constellation for scholarship and artistic practices that draw on archival material. Her argument is founded on an engagement with colonial archives that hold strands of Southern African pasts, and demonstrate its implications by examining the Clanwilliam Arts Project. Through an analysis of this case study, she argues that the Anarchive facilitates a privileging of decolonial forms of custodianship of the past that can lead to communal, co-designed and embodied forms of historical narration

Thomas Paine’s democratic linguistic radicalism: a political philosophy of language?
Carine Lounissi’s premise in this chapter is that characterising Thomas Paine’s radicalism is a challenge, which she takes up by focusing on his “democratic style” as a way to make his ideas accessible to the common man. The author thus studies Paine’s “democratic style”, for which he was harshly criticised, as being part and parcel of his inherently republican and democratic radicalism. She argues that in his writings Paine sought to deconstruct the discourse of the political elite of his time, associated with the trappings of royalty, and promoted the language of common sense instead as an instrument of resistance predicated on the universality of human nature. He invented a radical linguistics whereby he wished to go back to the roots of words.</p

Dynamic pricing with demand learning under competition
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Operations Research Center, 2007.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 199-204).In this thesis, we focus on oligopolistic markets for a single perishable product, where firms compete by setting prices (Bertrand competition) or by allocating quantities (Cournot competition) dynamically over a finite selling horizon. The price-demand relationship is modeled as a parametric function, whose parameters are unknown, but learned through a data driven approach. The market can be either in disequilibrium or in equilibrium. In disequilibrium, we consider simultaneously two forms of learning for the firm: (i) learning of its optimal pricing (resp. allocation) strategy, given its belief regarding its competitors' strategy; (ii) learning the parameters in the price-demand relationship. In equilibrium, each firm seeks to learn the parameters in the price-demand relationship for itself and its competitors, given that prices (resp. quantities) are in equilibrium. In this thesis, we first study the dynamic pricing (resp. allocation) problem when the parameters in the price-demand relationship are known. We then address the dynamic pricing (resp. allocation) problem with learning of the parameters in the price-demand relationship. We show that the problem can be formulated as a bilevel program in disequilibrium and as a Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints (MPECs) in equilibrium. Using results from variational inequalities, bilevel programming and MPECs, we prove that learning the optimal strategies as well as the parameters, is achieved. Furthermore, we design a solution method for efficiently solving the problem. We prove convergence of this method analytically and discuss various insights through a computational study.(cont.) Finally, we consider closed-loop strategies in a duopoly market when demand is stochastic. Unlike open-loop policies (such policies are computed once and for all at the beginning of the time horizon), closed loop policies are computed at each time period, so that the firm can take advantage of having observed the past random disturbances in the market. In a closed-loop setting, subgame perfect equilibrium is the relevant notion of equilibrium. We investigate the existence and uniqueness of a subgame perfect equilibrium strategy, as well as approximations of the problem in order to be able to compute such policies more efficiently.by Carine Simon.Ph.D
Euroscepticism in the political culture of Norway and Switzerland: A Comparative Case-Study Analysis
This bachelor thesis is a qualitative, comparative paper on Euroscepticism in the political culture of Norway and Switzerland. The questions I seek to answer are What kind of Euroscepticism exists in Norway and Switzerland? To what extent is Euroscepticism prevalent in the political culture of these two countries? And if it is prevalent, why is that? I analyse this using multiple comparative case study analysis and motivational typologies of Euroscepticism. The motivational typologies I focus on are political- and cultural Euroscepticism. Based on the results from the European Values Study 2017, I find that both types can be found in both cases based on political systems, political history, and national identity. My discussion leads me to conclude that Euroscepticism is prevalent in both Norway and Switzerland, although they differ in reasons

Considerations on the principles of development and manufacturing qualities of challenge agents for use in human infection models
A consortium of international experts with experience in the production of challenge agents, performance of challenge studies, and/or good manufacturing practices (GMP) was established to draft a considerations document, intended to discuss fundamental principles of selection, characterisation, manufacture, quality control and storage of challenge agents for international reference. In the absence of clear international guidance on this topic, the principles outlined in this document should be considered for implementation with the context of the pathogen and setting taken into consideration and for the purposes of improving volunteer safety, model reliability, and for interactions with regulatory agencies or other bodies which oversee human challenge studies. This document can be utilised across high-, middle- and low-income countries and can be applied whether the agent is manufactured in a certified GMP facility or in an academic laboratory by trained personnel with sufficient facilities, appropriate quality control measures and other best practices.

Plastic representation of the author (1648-1778). Repertoire and studies)
The current doctoral thesis is focused on the use of portraits of authors in Spain as a strategy to seek for recognition, between 1648 and 1778. The complexity of the recovery of the sense of the author is treated taking into account the way the literary field functions and the existing mechanisms in the literature institutionalization. The investigation is based on a methodologic development proposal that enters into the market networks sociology field. The study is developed within an international co-tutorship framework in place between the University of Córdoba and the University of Bordeaux Montaigne. Prof. Pedro Ruiz Pérez (PHEBO-SILEM) and Prof. Jean- Marc Buiguès (AMERIBER) are the co-advisors. The thesis maintains a strong interdisciplinary character as it combines Literature, Fine Arts and Digital Humanities fields. The link that is originated during the Spanish literature Golden Age “Siglo De Oro” between Art and literature, together with the Research and Development, is considered as an unbreakable pair along the research, considering the appearance of new sociability plots in the literary environment. The core of the investigation is therefore concentrated in two fundamental aspects. On one hand, the constitution of a catalog of author portraits that originates from Quevedo’s Parnaso and that is finalized with Lopez de Sedano’s portraits Parnaso. On the other, different case studies in which the authors we take as a reference contribute to the establishment of a canon as an authorial positioning strategy using artistic representation. A comparison is made between these central axes of the study and on one side the earlier portraits that take as a starting point the Book of portraits of Pacheco (1599-1644), and on the other, with subsequent portraits, which culminate in the gallery of portraits of author of 1780
