Matching random colored points with rectangles

Let R¿B be a random partition, or coloring, of S in which each point of S is included in R uniformly at random with probability 1/2. We study the random variable M(n) equal to the number of points of S that are covered by the rectangles of a maximum strong matching of S with axis-aligned rectangles. The matching consists of closed axis-aligned rectangles that cover exactly two points of S of the same color, and is strong in the sense that all of its rectangles are pairwise disjoint. We prove that almost surely M(n) = 0.83n for n large enough. Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Seara Vermelha: discurso ideológico/partidário e suas implicações no estético
This research analyzes the book Seara Vermelha by the writer Jorge Amado. It attempts to demonstrate that the ideological and political project from the Communist Political Party is explicitly part of the construction of the narrative of the book and it evaluates how much and in what ways this is reflected on the esthetics of the novel. The demonstration of the presence of the communist political project on the narrative is initially done by the analysis
of the extratextual elements of the book: title, theme sentences and dedications. It also shows the infiltration of a political party ideology on the plot of the novel by setting conflicts on the narrative which literarily represent the existing conflict of classes in the capitalist society and by the construction of the character Juvêncio as the typical hero of the socialist realism. On the one hand, it opposes to the view that the presence of the ideological and political speech always jeopardizes the literary value of Jorge Amado s work, and at the same time the study reveals the existence of an esthetic elaborate work in the narrative moments of Seara Vermelha when the ideological and political project is realized explicitly or implicitly. On the other hand, there are also narrative moments when it becomes evident the harm caused by the literary construction in favor of the theses of the Communist Political
Party. By the fact that the ideological and political speech some times damages the esthetics of the narrative construction, and other times it fits accurately to the romantic story without causing any harm to the esthetics of the book, I have come to the conclusion that it is not the presence or absence of the ideological and political speech that makes the work of Jorge Amado better or worse when its esthetics is to be analyzed. In Seara Vermelha , the biggest or the smallest manifestation of the esthetics is, above all, due to the transformation which is done or not with the ideological and political speech as an esthetic literary work.Esta pesquisa realiza uma análise da obra Seara vermelha, do escritor Jorge Amado. Procura demonstrar que o projeto político-ideológico do Partido Comunista manifesta-se explicitamente na construção da narrativa dessa obra e avalia o quanto e de que maneira isso se reflete na elaboração estética da obra. A demonstração da presença da ideologia políticopartidária
na narrativa faz-se, inicialmente, a partir da análise de elementos extratextuais da própria obra: título, epígrafes e dedicatórias. Também é demonstrada a infiltração da ideologia político-partidária no enredo do romance pelo estabelecimento de conflitos na narrativa que representam literariamente o conflito de classes existente na sociedade capitalista e pela construção da personagem Juvêncio como um herói típico do Realismo
socialista. Contrariando a concepção de que a presença do discurso ideológico-partidário compromete sempre o valor literário da obra amadiana, a pesquisa revela a existência de um trabalho de elaboração estética em momentos narrativos de Seara vermelha nos quais o projeto político-ideológico evidencia-se explícita ou implicitamente. Em contrapartida,
também há momentos narrativos em que fica evidente o prejuízo da construção literária em favor da justificação de teses do Partido Comunista. Tendo em vista o fato de a presença do discurso ideológico-partidário ora comprometer o trabalho estético da construção narrativa, ora imbricar-se na trama romanesca sem prejuízo algum para a estética da obra, chega-se à
conclusão de que não é a presença ou a ausência do discurso ideológico-partidário que torna a obra amadiana melhor ou pior trabalhada do ponto de vista estético. Em Seara vermelha, a maior ou menor manifestação do estético deve-se, sobretudo, à mediação que se faz ou que se deixa de fazer, em dados momentos da narrativa, do discurso ideológico-partidário pela
forma literária. Essa mediação é mais intensa ou menos intensa conforme a prioridade que se dá, em momentos distintos da narrativa, ao fato literário ou ao projeto político-ideológico

Modelagem estocástica do algoritmo NLMS: revisão e aprimoramentos

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Elétrica.Este trabalho de pesquisa trata da modelagem estocástica de algoritmos adaptativos com sinal de entrada normalizado. Particularmente, visa se obter um modelo estocástico mais preciso para o algoritmo NLMS (normalized least-mean-square) do que os até então disponíveis na literatura. O modelo aqui proposto considera um problema de identificação de sistema com planta estacionária, apresenta solução analítica e contempla diferentes tipos de sinais de entrada gaussianos (complexos, reais, correlacionados e não correlacionados). A partir das expressões que descrevem o comportamento médio do algoritmo, são derivadas expressões para o valor do erro quadrático médio em excesso em regime permanente e o desajuste. Tais expressões possibilitam uma melhor compreensão de como e quais parâmetros afetam o desempenho do algoritmo em regime permanente. Além disso, considerando sinal de entrada branco, relações que permitem ajustar (através do passo de adaptação) a velocidade de convergência e o erro em regime permanente dos algoritmos NLMS e LMS são apresentadas. Resultados de simulação para diferentes cenários de operação são mostrados, atestando a precisão do modelo proposto frente a outros modelos da literatura
