gp100/pmel17 and tyrosinase encode multiple epitopes recognized by Th1-type CD4+T cells.

CD4(+) T cells modulate the magnitude and durability of CTL responses in vivo, and may serve as effector cells in the tumour microenvironment. In order to identify the turnout epitopes recognized by tumour-reactive human CD4+ T cells, we combined the use of an HLA-DR4/peptide binding algorithm with an IFN-gamma ELISPOT assay. Two known and three novel CD4+ T cell epitopes derived from the gp 100/pmel17 and tyrosinase mefanocyte-associated antigens were confirmed or identified. Of major interest, we determined that freshly-isolated PBMC frequencies of Th1-type CD4+ T recognizing these peptides are frequently elevated in HLA-DR4+ melanoma patients (but not normal donors) that are currently disease-free as a result of therapeutic intervention. Epitope-specific CD4+ T cells from normal DR4+ donors could be induced, however, after in vitro stimulation with autologous dendritic cell pulsed with antigens (peptides or antigen-positive melanoma lysates) or infected with recombinant vaccinia virus encoding the relevant antigen. Peptide-reactive CD4+ T cells also recognized HLA-DR4+ melanoma cell lines that constitutively express the relevant antigen. Based on these data, these epitopes may serve as potent vaccine components to promote clinically-relevant Th1-type CD4+ T cell effector function in situ. (C) 2001 Cancer Research Campaign

The biosynthesis of brominated tyrosine metabolites by Aplysina fistularis

    No full text
The biosynthesis of brominated tyrosine metabolites by the marine sponge Aplysina fistularis was investigated. (UU-\sp{14}C) -L-Tyrosine, (UU-\sp{14}C) -L-3-bromotyrosine, and (UU-\sp{14}) -3,5-dibromotyrosine were incorporated into both dibromoverongiaquinol and aeroplysinin-1, and (methyl-\sp{14}C) methionine was specifically incorporated into the O-methyl group of aeroplysinin-1. (Methyl-\sp{14}C) -O-methyltyrosine and (methyl-\sp{14}C) -3,5-dibromo-O-methyltyrosine and several putative nitrile precursors were not significantly incorporated into aeroplysinin-1.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:32:36Z (GMT). Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    No full text
    The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region

The reproductive seasonality and fecundity of yellowtail clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii) in the Philippines

    No full text
Understanding the spawning patterns and egg production of clownfish is important for understanding their life history and the factors contributing to population persistence. The egg production and temporal spawning patterns of eight breeding pairs of yellowtail clownfish, Amphiprion clarkii (Bennett 1830), were observed for a 14-month period on a coral reef in the Central Visayas, Philippines. Spawning events and egg production revealed a peak breeding season from November through May, which coincides with temperatures below 30 °C. Noticeably fewer spawning events and smaller clutch sizes occurred during the warmer months (30 to 31.5 °C) of June through October. Within the spawning season, egg production increased weakly leading up to the new moon and decreased after the full moon. The seasonality of spawning events found in this study were comparable to those of clownfish in temperate regions, and surprisingly unlike findings from other tropical latitudes and climates. These findings suggest that recruitment and larval dispersal in this population will be most sensitive to oceanographic conditions during relatively narrow periods of time each year.Peer reviewe

The significance of Magnus L. Robinson and the national leader to the black community, 1880-1891, 1981

    No full text
In this paper the writer has undertaken the task of bringing to the forefront the contributions of Magnus L. Robinson and his paper, The National Leader, to the Black community during the period of 1880 to 1891. A large part of the paper is based upon data obtained from The National Leader and letters of Frederick Douglass and his son, Frederick Douglass, Jr., to Robinson. Magnus L. Robinson was a black Republican who lived during the period termed by some historians as the "Nadir." He and his paper were situated in the Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, D. C. area. Because of his allegiance to the Republican party, he was appointed to many political offices. This study shows how Robinson used these political appointments to elevate and advance the conditions of Blacks. Another phase of the study analyzes the newspaper, The National Leader. It will show how this black Republican newspaper kept members of the Black community aware and abreast of current day issues that directly or indirectly affected their lives. Some of these issues were lynchings, disfranchisement, education, health and women suffrage. Finally, this study contends that Magnus L. Robinson and his paper, The National Leader, have both been neglected in the study of Afro- American History; and that they deserve recognition along with other Black Americans who devoted their lives to the advancement of the Black race

1^{1}L. B. Knight, JR., W. C. Easley, and W. Weltner, JR., J. Chem. Phys. 52 1607 (1970).""Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of FloridaBO and AlO molecules have been trapped in rare-gas matrices at 4K4^\circ K in their 2Σ^{2}\Sigma ground states. Hyperfine (hf) interactions, g tensor, and matrix effects are strikingly different for these two species. BO exhibits a large unpaired spin density at the boron nucleus, is highly oriented in a ncon matrix, and has g values near ge=2.0023g_{e} = 2.0023 in all matrices. In the ionic AlO molecule, only 20% of the odd electron is on the aluminum atom, and k1k_{1} and A1A_{1} (hf splitting of 27Al^{27}Al) are extremely sensitive to the rare-gas employed.1employed.^{1} 83Kr^{83}Kr hf structure has been resolved in that matrix associated with an extra set of lines that vanish above 35K35^\circ K and reappear upon cooling to 4K4^\circ K. The molecule formed between AlO and one Kr atom is presumably linear and exhibits a high degree of preferential orientation in the matrix. Its Al hfs is greater than that of AlO in a non-complexed lattice site
