    Primary total hip replacement in childhood, adolescence and young patients: Quality and outcome of clinical studies

    Objective: The present meta-analysis illustrates relevant information about hip replacement in young patients that has been published during the past 3 decades. Material and methods: Based on a MedLine literature review a total of 95 studies were evaluated. Parameters for evaluation of study quality and outcome were implant survival rates (ISR), number of patients, indications, follow-up, surgical approaches and number of surgeons. Results: Most studies consider patient numbers <50. In 33 studies one implant system was applied compared to 65 studies in which more than one system was used. Most studies include different surgical approaches. 20% of all studies contained neither the number of surgeons, nor the type of surgical approach. The overall ISR could be evaluated in 67 studies. Sufficient data about the ISR of stem and/or sockets were available in 50 papers.     The idea of human dignity in American doctrine and legal culture

    Neither in the Constitution of the United States nor in the later enacted Bill of Rights, does the term “human dignity” occur. Therefore the thesis that was established in the early 90s of the 20th century by Ronald Dworkin and William J. Brennan Jr. may come as a surprise. Both of them – an eminent philosopher of law and a judge of the Supreme Court, recognized human dignity as a fundamental value declared by the American constitution and its complementary Bill of Rights. After closer recognition with American legal culture, this thesis no longer raises such controversies. Despite the fact that the Founding Fathers of the United States did not care so much about dignity as they did about other values, this idea nevertheless appeared in their publications and personal letters. Moreover, in the first Supreme Court ruling on Chisholm v. Georgia, the state, as a product of the human being and its importance, took the view that the right to human dignity was innate. Of course, the American doctrine and its legal culture have been evolving for two hundred years, changing under the influence of a number of important social phenomena. As key topics for the article the following are recognized: abolitionism and the fight against slavery, the suffrage movement and the struggle for women’s rights and the civil rights movement and the fight against racial segregation. All of them undoubtedly have impacted the American idea of dignity, and they certainly have played a significant role in the changes that have occurred over the years in the United States. In European legal culture dignity similarly plays a crucial role, both in individual countries as well as at supranational level.     Comparação entre imagem digital convencional e invertida na detecção e estimativa da profundidade de cáries próximais

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Odontologia.O presente trabalho teve como propósito comparar o desempenho diagnóstico da imagem digital convencional (modalidade 1), imagem digital invertida (modalidade 2) e a análise simultânea de ambas (modalidade 3) no diagnóstico e estimativa da profundidade de lesões cariosas proximais. Imagens digitais diretas de 41 dentes posteriores foram utilizadas neste estudo. Vinte observadores, dois radiologistas, doze alunos de curso de Pós-Graduação em Radiologia Odontológica e seis clínicos gerais, foram treinados e calibrados para a interpretação dos dois tipos de imagens digitais quanto à presença ou ausência de cárie e determinação da profundidade da lesão quando presente, utilizando para isto duas escalas de cinco pontos. As respostas dos observadores, obtidas em três sessões de observação, uma para cada modalidade, foram comparadas ao estado real das superfícies dentais conhecido pelo exame histológico. Curvas ROC e Valores de sensibilidade, especificidade e acurácia foram utilizados como medidas do desempenho dos observadores na detecção de lesões cariosas, e o teste estatístico Kappa ponderado como medida do desempenho dos observadores na tarefa da estimativa da profundidade das lesões cariosas. Todos os valores foram avaliados por análise de variância (ANOVA). Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as três modalidades de imagem testadas

    Substrate-induced Strain Effects On Pr0.6ca 0.4mno3 Films

    We report the characterization of the crystal structure, low-temperature charge and orbital ordering, transport and magnetization of Pr 0.6Ca0.4MnO3 films grown on LaA1O3, NdGaO3 and SrTiO3 substrates, which provide compressive (LaAlO3) and tensile (NdGaO3) and SrTiO3) strain. The films are observed to exhibit different cristallographic symmetries from the bulk material and the low-temperature ordering is found to be more robust under compressive-as opposed to tensile - strain. In fact, bulk-like charge and orbital ordering is not observed in the film grown on NdGaO 3, which is the substrate that provides the least amount of measured, but tensile, strain. This result suggests the importance of the role played by the Mn-O-Mn bond angles in the formation of charge and orbital ordering at low temperatures.     MULTIWAVELENGTH OBSERVATIONS OF A TeV-FLARE FROM W COMAE

    We report results from an intensive multiwavelength campaign on the intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object W Com (z = 0.102) during a strong outburst of very high energy gamma-ray emission in 2008 June. The very high energy gamma-ray signal was detected by VERITAS on 2008 June 7-8 with a flux F(>200 GeV) = (5.7 +/- 0.6) x 10(-11) cm(-2) s(-1), about three times brighter than during the discovery of gamma-ray emission from W Com by VERITAS in 2008 March. The initial detection of this flare by VERITAS at energies above 200 GeV was followed by observations in high-energy gamma rays (AGILE; E(gamma) >= 100 MeV), X-rays (Swift and XMM-Newton), and at UV, and ground-based optical and radio monitoring through the GASP-WEBT consortium and other observatories. Here we describe the multiwavelength data and derive the spectral energy distribution of the source from contemporaneous data taken throughout the flare

    Trade and Business-Cycle Comovement: Evidence from the EU

    This paper is an empirical study of the determinants of business-cycle comovement. Using a panel of European countries (1972-2004) it is found that bilateral trade intensity is a robust determinant of real comovement in Europe, this confirming the seminal study by Frankel and Rose (1998). It is also found that convergence in macroeconomic policies (especially fiscal policies) is associated to high degree of intra-european business-cycle correlation. Moreover, having controlled for policy convergence, the effect of bilateral trade on business cycle comovement weakens on average by a factor of 36%-33% with respect to that estimated according to Frankel and Rose’s econometric specification, this suggesting the potential endogeneity of the set of instrumental variables adopted by the two authors (Gruben, Koo and Millis, 2002).
