The subject of this thesis is the Khozhenie za tri morya, an account of a journey to India by a 15th century Russian merchant, Afanasy Nikitin, of his sojourn there and of his return thence. After a brief introduction the author examines the history of this document both with regard to early copies of the text and to more recent attitudes towards the work. The second section consists of a translation into English of the fullest version of the text which has been obtained by taking the fullest extant copy and adding to it various words, phrases and passages which only occur in other versions. The third section of the work consists of commentary notes on the translation with particular emphasis on the vocabulary used by Nikitin and on points of general interest. In the fourth section, "Notes on the Historical and Geographical Background to the Khozhenie", the author examines the history of the various regions through which Nikitin passed, thereby building up a picture of the conditions which he encountered. There are notes on the location and character of the various towns through which he passed. The next section, "Russian Awareness of India before Nikitin", examines the question of how much was known of India in medieval Russia. The author makes the point that it was not an entirely unknown land and that certain connections had existed between the two countries prior to Nikitin's visit. In the sixth section, "Nikitin - a Traveller among Travellers", Nikitin's work is contrasted with the works of other travellers to the East who had preceded him. It is pointed out that, whilst his account is perhaps less important than some Russian commentators maintain, it is worthy of more consideration than it has generally been granted in the West. A reference section, bibliography and glossary complete the original work in this thesis. Copies of several versions of the text are included in the appendices, as is a map showing Nikitin's route

Information acquisition and financial contagion.

This paper incorporates costly voluntary acquisition of information à la Nikitin and Smith (2007) [Nikitin, M., Smith, R.T., 2007. Information acquisition, coordination, and fundamentals in a financial crisis. Journal of Banking and Finance, in press, doi:10.1016/j.jbankfin.2007.04.031], in a framework similar to Allen and Gale (2000) [Allen, F., Gale, D., 2000. Financial contagion. Journal of Political Economy 108, 1–33], without relying on any unexpected shock to model contagion. In this framework, contagion and financial crises are the result of information gathering by depositors, weak fundamentals and an incomplete market structure of banks. It also shows how financial systems entering a recession can affect others with apparently stronger economic conditions (contagion). Finally, this is the first paper to investigate the effectiveness of the Contingent Credit Line procedures, introduced by the IMF at the end of the nineties, as a mechanism to prevent the propagation of crises.Central Bank; Contingent credit line; Financial contagion; Fundamentals; Verification equilibrium;

Mutual capture of dipolar molecules at low and very low energies. II. Numerical study.

No full text
The low-energy rate coefficients of capture of two identical dipolar polarizable rigid rotors in their lowest nonresonant (j(1) = 0 and j(2) = 0) and resonant (j(1) = 0, 1 and j(2) = 1, 0) states are calculated accurately within the close-coupling (CC) approach. The convergence of the quantum rate coefficients to their quantum-classical counterparts is studied. A comparison of the present accurate numerical with approximate analytical results (Nikitin, E. E.; Troe, J. J. Phys. Chem. A 2010, 114, 9762) indicates a good performance of the previous approach which was based on the interpolation between s-wave fly wheel quantal and all-wave classical adiabatic channel limits. The results obtained apply as well to the formation of transient molecular species in the encounter of two atoms at very low collision energy interacting via resonance dipole-dipole interaction.Deutsche Forschungsgemeindschaft [TR 69/17-1

Název práce: Strukturování plazmových polymerů: nové metody přípravy tenkých vrstev s nano-architekturou Autor: Daniil Nikitin Katedra/Ústav: Katedra Makromolekulární Fyziky/Univerzita Karlova Vedoucí doktorské práce: Doc. Ing. To zásadně ovlivnilo bio-rezistentní vlastnosti poly(ethylen oxidu). Samostatná kapitola je věnována studiu vzniku, růstu a transportu nanočástic uvnitř zdroje. Měděné a stříbrné nanočástice byly detekovány in situ v plynné fázi buďto pomocí maloúhlového rozptylu rentgenového záření, nebo pomocí UV-Vis spektroskopie. Vůbec poprvé bylo zjištěno zachytávání kovových nanočástic v plazmatu. Navíc byla potvrzena částečná re-depozice nanočástic na terč a...Title: Structuring of plasma polymers: new methods for fabrication of nano-architectured thin films Author: Daniil Nikitin Department / Institute: Department of Macromolecular Physics/Charles University Supervisor of the doctoral thesis: Doc. Ing. Andrey Shukurov, PhD, Department of Macromolecular Physics/Charles University Abstract: The PhD thesis aims at the investigation of nanostructures based on plasma polymers. The main attention is paid to the combination of a gas aggregation cluster source with plasma-assisted vapor phase deposition for the fabrication of metal-polymer nanocomposites with bactericidal potential. Copper nanoparticles were incorporated into a biocompatible matrix of plasma polymerized poly(ethylene oxide) (ppPEO). The efficiency of such nanocomposite against multi-drug resistant bacteria was demonstrated. It was found that the segmental dynamics of the plasma polymer significantly changed in the presence of nanoparticles as revealed by the measurements of the dynamic glass transition temperature. The nanoscale confinement crucially influences the non-fouling properties of poly(ethylene oxide). A separate chapter is dedicated to the examination of the nanoparticle formation, growth and transport inside the source. Copper and silver nanoparticles were detected in situ in the gas phase...Katedra makromolekulární fyzikyDepartment of Macromolecular PhysicsMatematicko-fyzikální fakultaFaculty of Mathematics and Physic

Observations of Bºs→ψ(2S)η and Bº(s)→ψ(2S)π+π- decays

First observations of the B0s →ψ(2S)η, B0 →ψ(2S)π + π − and B0s →ψ(2S)π + π − decays are made using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 7 TeV. The ratios of the branching fractions of each of the ψ(2S) modes with respect to the corresponding J/ψ decays are B(B0s →ψ(2S)η) ÷ B(B0s →J/ψη) = 0.83± 0.14 (stat)±0.12 (syst) ±0.02 (B), ; B(B0→ψ(2S)π + π − ) ÷ B(B0→J/ψπ + π − ) = 0.56± 0.07 (stat)±0.05 (syst)± 0.01 (B), ; B(B0s →ψ(2S)π + π − ) ÷ B(B0s →J/ψπ + π − ) = 0.34± 0.04 (stat)±0.03 (syst)± 0.01 (B), where the third uncertainty corresponds to the uncertainties of the dilepton branching fractions of the J/ψ and ψ(2S) meson decays

Charm production at the LHC in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The decays D0→K−π+, D+→K−π+π+, D⁎+→D0(K−π+)π+, D+s→ϕ(K−K+)π+, Λ+c→pK−π+, and their charge conjugates are analysed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 nb−1. Differential cross-sections dσ/dpT are measured for prompt production of the five charmed hadron species in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0<pT<8 GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5. Theoretical predictions are compared to the measured differential cross-sections. The integrated cross-sections of the charm hadrons are computed in the above pT-y range, and their ratios are reported. A combination of the five integrated cross-section measurements gives σ(cc¯)pT<8 GeV/c,2.0<y<4.5=1419±12(stat)±116(syst)±65(frag) μb, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the fragmentation functions

A Novel Approach for Investigation of Chain Transfer Events by Pulsed Laser Polymerization

No full text
Pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) with subsequent analysis of molecular mass distribution (MMD) is used to determine the rate coefficient of chain transfer to an agent A, k(trA), by varying pulse repetition rate such that the contributions of PLP-induced and chain-transfer-induced peaks to the MMD change to a significant extent. It is shown by simulation that the relative heights of these peaks may be used to estimate k(trA). The method is applied to evaluation of the rate coefficient of chain transfer to dodecylmercaptan with butyl methacrylate polymerizations at -11, 0, 20 and 40 degrees C. The Arrhenius parameters for this coefficient are determined to be: A(k(trA)) (2.2 +/- 0.6) x 10 6 L.mol(-1).s(-1) and E(a)(k(trA)) (22.1 +/- 0.7) kJ.mol(-1)
