To vitalize a language is to give strength or vigor to the dynamics of its existence. It means having the language in the rituals of the shamans, in playground, in the telling of traditional stories, in the dances, in the songs, in the crafts, in the traditional clothing, in the paintings, in the everyday life of the community, even if it is used as a second language. This process has been experienced by the Kokama people of Brazil and Peru, through decisions that lead the language of their ancestors to occupy communicative spaces inside and outside the villages. In this paper, I describe the work for the vitalization of the Kokama language, which was presented in the “Viva Língua Viva” conference as part of the celebrations of the International Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019. I show how vitalization is linked to the conquest of our traditional land through language, as well as the occupation of physical and digital spaces in the 21st century. I describe several initiatives, like the Kokama Traditional Knowledge and Science and Knowledge Centers (known as Museu Vivo), the Lua Verde and Antonio Samias Centers, and the Atawanã Kuarachi Kokama and Tsetsu Kamutun Indigenous Education Centers, which are places that contribute to vitalize the language. I also discuss the development of digital applications  created in collaborations with Kokama people from different generations, and have the goal of bringing the language to new domains. In this way, these initiatives can aid in the vitalization of the language, where children, young people and adults find the social function of language when expressing their culture through their speech.

The content of this thesis is included in the Language Policy research line, developed in the Lexical and Terminological Studies Center (Lexterm Center), from the University of Brasilia (UnB). The object of study is the Kokama language. The goal of the research is to present the political and cultural reordering of Kokama people: the reconquest of the language and the territory beyond the borders between Brazil and Peru. The empirical field is Kokama people across borders. In this reordering, social actors organize themselves to form a collective movement for reaffirmation of identity, reconquest of the territory and vitalization of the language. In this sense, the main objective was to analyze the different processes of territorialization of Kokama language in the Amazon and its effects on the consolidated organizational forms primarily on the language, from ethnic mobilization of its people. The field research was carried out in three stages, in the periods 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon. The methodology considered principles of ethnography, according to Almeida (2014), who depicts the situational mapping, in view of a new cartography, which breaks with the ways of mapping the territories held by geography; also Calvet (2007), Morello (2015) and Oliveira (2015) who based his thoughts on Language Policy. Hinton (2007) directs us to the language revitalization endangered method, by the method called Master- Apprentice; and that one by Vallejos Yopán and Yuyarimam Chota (2002) provided us with rich information about the preparation of materials prepared by Formabiap that focus on teaching methodology of Kokama language as a second Language (L2). From this perspective, these methodologies guided the preparation of teaching materials of Kokama language contained in this thesis and the political decisions taken. The result was the creation of the collection with three volumes, called "Yawati Tinín", with eight comic books and two paradidactic books. In addition to the methodological approach to Kokama language teaching and learning, we have developed an android mobile application called “Kokama translator”. The materials produced in this research fill part of the gap of a language policy focused on a language in vitalization and also helps to encourage other people to a decision-making to have their languages back to daily life, as well as draw attention to the lack of Language Policy for languages in danger of extinction.IKUAKƗRATUPA : Ajanka ikuatupakɨra Wɨkan Kumitsa Kokama, ajanka Centro de Estudos Lexicais e Terminológicos (Centro Lexterm) Ikua Uka Brasiliakuara. Indigenous teacher and process of territorialization in the city of Manaus/AM/Brasil

    No full text
Indigenous peoples in the Amazon are in constant movement, from their lands in the heart of the Amazon to the cities, mainly to the great metropolis called Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. Arriving to the big city, they usually live in the peripheries and become exposed to the problems experienced by ethnic minorities, leading them to a crucial decision point regarding the organization of indigenous peoples in the city. This article deals with indigenous cultural diversity in Manaus / AM / Brazil. It presents the making of the indigenous teacher identity in a new process of territorialization to which the empirical field was the city of Manaus. In this new process, social agents reorganize themselves forming a collective movement with different ethnicities, in favor of specific claims, re-elaborating and re-signifying concepts, imposing their own classification. In this sense, the main goal of this study is to give visibility to the collective identities of the city, to the processes of social reorganization of indigenous communities which delineate their specific territorialities in the city, and to the demands for a Differentiated School.

    Get PDF
Currently, the Kokama population is estimated at approximately 19,052 individuals (SIASI/SESAI, 2020), and this number has been increasing. For example, the COPIME report (2022) states that around 10,000 Kokama live in Manaus (AM) alone. The presence of the Kokama extends across several regions, including the Upper, Middle, and Lower Solimões, the Lower and Middle Rio Negro, as well as other states in Brazil, such as Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, many others. The topic chosen for my dissertation is the linguistic resources activated by the Kokama language to express the unique conception of the transformation processes of beings, here referred to as "Indigenous Epistemologies: The Kokama Language Beyond Lexicon and Syntax." It is a specific way of thinking about cognition, conceptions of image, color, and the definition of the elements that make up the language—what is truly extralinguistic. In this sense, we start from the concept of language-spirit, a union, an existence, a statement that leads us to consider a new epistemic reality. Since it is not visible, it compels us to adopt new forms of understanding because "the spirit" cannot be seen; however, it is always present in rituals, songs, birds, animals, rivers, forests, traditional knowledge, and the worldview of Indigenous peoples. In every healing, in every teaching, the spirits of languages are present. The terms ‘spirit’ and ‘spirituality’ are present in various religious conceptions. However, the notion of spirit presented here is that of the original peoples of the Abya Yala continents (Amazonian, Andean, and Mesoamerican). The interweaving of language and spirit forms the foundation of the concept of an Indigenous person among many Amerindian peoples. The objective is to analyze the linguistic forms mobilized to describe the transformation processes of beings in the Kokama language beyond lexicon and syntax, demonstrating that, at a conceptual and logical level, Kokama follows the structure of "Amerindian thought" developed by the Tupí peoples, in which mythological, shamanic, cosmological, and linguistic systems share common principles, just as the struggle for land does. Thus, the research will involve firsthand data collection of the Kokama language and bibliographic material concerning linguistic resources (semantic fields, syntagms, morphology) used to express processes related to development, state change, and transformation in humans and non-humans. This will be supported by ethnographic research concerning the ontology of the Indigenous people. As a result, this research will produce a didactic unit for the teaching and learning of the Kokama language.

Abstract: This work presents a proposal of didactic material development in Kokama, a tupí-guaraní language spoken through the Amazon river, specifically for the community of Nova Esperança Kokama of Brasileirinho neighborhood (Manaus-AM). Since the 80s the Kokama language in Brazil is undergoing a process of empowerment through language policy projects mainly because Kokama leaders seek support to not let their language die. From 2005 on the revitalization of this language was strengthened by a series of actions, like the one developed by teachers of the Nova Esperança Kokama community, which began to develop teaching and learning textbooks on this language. As one of the first results, a collection composed of three comics was created, called "YAWATI Tinín, I, II and III" and drawn up for the Amazon Kokama schools. We stress here the significant contributions that this work offers to the community, taking examples from it to illustrate our reflections. It must be said that there is a strong hope for the linguistic strengthening of the Kokama language, an endangered language that are still in need of policies that respects the traditional knowledge and learning processes of Kokama people

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
