Allergic rhinitis and its impact on asthma (ARIA): achievements in 10 years and future needs

    No full text
Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma represent global health problems for all age groups. Asthma and rhinitis frequently coexist in the same subjects. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) was initiated during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999 (published in 2001). ARIA has reclassified AR as mild/moderate-severe and intermittent/persistent. This classification closely reflects patients' needs and underlines the close relationship between rhinitis and asthma. Patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are confronted with various treatment choices for the management of AR. This contributes to considerable variation in clinical practice, and worldwide, patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are faced with uncertainty about the relative merits and downsides of the various treatment options. In its 2010 Revision, ARIA developed clinical practice guidelines for the management of AR and asthma comorbidities based on the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. ARIA is disseminated and implemented in more than 50 countries of the world. Ten years after the publication of the ARIA World Health Organization workshop report, it is important to make a summary of its achievements and identify the still unmet clinical, research, and implementation needs to strengthen the 2011 European Union Priority on allergy and asthma in children

“Domattina Tahiti sarà un paese immaginario”. Gino Nibbi e il mito delle isole della felicità

    No full text
Within the copious literature on the myth of Tahiti, this essay draws attention to a not very well-known and almost unobtainable book, Nelle Isole della Felicità (1934) , and on its author Gino Nibbi (Fermo, Italy 1896-Grottaferrata, Italy 1969) – a writer, journalist, art expert and voyager who lived in Australia for a long time, spending three months in the Society Islands. A rare Italian account on those Polynesian worlds that would otherwise be the exclusive monopoly of French and American writers, Nibbi’s book stands out for its refusal to surf the epic of denunciation and condemnation so frequent among the desecrators of the South Seas. The author manages – in a fairly original manner for his times – to avoid taking a merely pitying approach to the Tahitians, wiped out by the missionaries’ evangelization and by the devastating French rule, or to simply go along the flow of the “no memory people”, the lyric on “les immémoriaux” sung by Gaugain, Gerbalut, Segalen and the lot. Nibbi rather chooses a different path, equally distant also from the abundant literature on the exotic that systematically avoided any reference to the colonial aspect to insist on the beautiful landscapes, the charming natives, the fertile nature and the marvels of casual and sensual love. While well-aware of the loss of the ancient traditions following the so-called “fatal impact”, Nibbi emphasises the contacts and contaminations, and the Tahitians’ capacity to act upon their impure present of subjugated colonised people – catching glimpses of persistence, complexity and of an unchartered vitality. By doing so the book offers an unusual vision of the Islands of Happiness that deconstructs their stereotypical and reifying representations, and also reveals a remarkable talent in describing the complex western creatures living at or passing-by the end of the romantic-Pacific line

Transforming the old into a foundation for the new - lessons of the Moldova ARIA Project

    No full text
This paper is a case study of what is recognized as one of the more successful projects in any country in the Europe and Central Asia region, not to mention in the poorest country of the region-Moldova. The ARIA project shows new ways to attack some of the most intractable problems of private sector development in Europe and Central Asia: how to facilitate reorganization and liquidation bankruptcies; how to promote small and medium enterprise spin-offs and new start-ups; and how to promote new learning at the enterprise level, both in the form of"Marshall Plan"programs with more advanced post-socialist countries, as well as continuous improvement programs (such as those adapted from Japanese programs). The prime mover for these programs is the quasi-public restructuring agency, ARIA, which was established as part of the Moldova Private Sector Development I loan. ARIA was structured to try to combine private sector entrepreneurship with a public function in the process of restructuring and bankruptcy. The study tries to account for the strategies and innovations that lead to results. And it tries to connect the ARIA strategy to past development literature by viewing the study through Albert Hirschman's work on social learning and change.Enterprise Development&Reform,Public Health Promotion,Banks&Banking Reform,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Small Scale Enterprise,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Banks&Banking Reform,Small Scale Enterprise,Microfinance,Private Participation in Infrastructure

The propagator and transfer matrix for a 3D inhomogeneous dissipative acoustic medium, expressed in Marchenko focusing functions

Standard Marchenko redatuming and imaging schemes neglect evanescent waves and are based on the assumption that decomposition into downgoing and upgoing waves is possible in the subsurface. Recently we have shown that propagator matrices, which circumvent these assumptions, can be expressed in terms of Marchenko focusing functions. In this paper we generalize the relation between the propagator matrix and the Marchenko focusing functions for a 3D inhomogeneous dissipative medium. Moreover, for the same type of medium we discuss a relation between the transfer matrix and the Marchenko focusing functions.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic

Operatic Aria as a Literary Text: the Phenomenon of Intergenre Interaction

    No full text
The article examines the operatic aria as a «synthetic» genre phenomenon based on combination of verbal text and its musical accompaniment. Accordingly, during different periods of the opera art's development, the importance of «verbal» and «musical» components varied in some cases in favor of the precedent literary text, in other cases in favor of the musical framing. Either way, the precedent literary text inevitably plays an important role in the semantic and structural organization of the operatic aria. The article describes the examples of the incorporation of a literary text into the operatic aria, particularly on the examples of elegy and serenade. As an example of matching operatic aria as a serenade was given Don Giovanni's aria by W. A. Mozart. Also the author analyzed possibility of a complex intersection of the elements of different literary genres in a single aria. In this article Lensky's aria from P. I. Tchaikovsky's “Eugene Onegin” was analyzed as a variant of the complex interactions of the elegy and serenade within a single aria.
