La peine de mort en Yugoslavie socialiste et le conflit des sources normatives

    No full text
The author analyses a discussion on death penalty that took place in Belgrade, at the end of the socialist era, between Igor Primorac and Ivan Jankovic. Primorac attacked the utilitarian justification of the socialist penal system, though he agreed on different, retributive grounds that death penalty for premeditated murder should be preserved. Jankovic advocated utilitarian ideas and rejected the death penalty as an atavistic aberration. In the first part of the article, their main arguments are presented and their contextual meaning is being explained. In the second part of the article, the author analyses those arguments and concludes that a) retributivism has not been the philosophy of death penalty during its history, b) that retentionist conclusions do not follow from retributive premises, c) that utilitarianism, in spite of its historical connection with abolitionism, can justify death penalty, d) that since the problem cannot be resolved on moral grounds alone, it should be resolved on political grounds, and e) that political considerations require the abolition of death penalty

    African city textualities

    No full text
The stereotype of Africa as a predominantly 'natural' space ignores the existence of vibrant and cosmopolitan urban environments on the continent. Far from merely embodying backwardness and lack, African cities are sites of complex and diverse cultural productions which participate in modernity and its dynamics of global flows and exchanges. This volume merges the concerns of urban, literary and cultural studies by focusing on the flows and exchanges of texts and textual elements. By analysing how texts such as popular and canonical fiction, popular music, self-help pamphlets, graffiti, films, journalistic writing, rumours and urban legends engage with the problems of citizenship, self-organisation and survival, the collection shows that despite all the problems of Africa, its cities continue to engender forward-looking creativity and hope. The texts collected here belong to several different genres themselves, and they are authored by both distinguished and younger scholars, based in and outside of Africa. The volume explores the textualities emerging from the cities of Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Above all, it calls for an end to disabling hierarchical categorisations of both texts and cities.Table of Contents1. Introduction: City, text, future Ranka Primorac 2. Ivan Vladislavic and the possible city.

The chapter explores the literary significance of Johannesburg in the writing of Ivan Vladislavić in the context of recent debates about how to read the African city. In his most recent work, Portrait with Keys: The City of Johannesburg Unlocked (2006), Vladislavić opens his personal archive of everyday life in the city to imaginative reinterpretation by readers. To read Vladislavić's “portrait” is to imagine the city as a space that might be written, read and experienced differently - to imagine it as a possible city. The self-reflexive nature of this project throws into critical relief recent calls to read Johannesburg as an “aesthetic project” rather than a “space of division” (Mbembe and Nuttall 353)

This text reveals the identity of the hitherto unknown author one of the oldest known ethnographic record from the island of Korčula. The manuscript titled “Narodne pjesme junačke i žetelačke” (Folk Songs of Heroes and Harvesters) dates back to 1892 and is preserved in the Archive of the Ethnology Division at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. Although the author of the manuscript is signed as “Ivan Žuvela, legal scholar,” his precise identification has remained elusive, with incorrect assumptions and even speculation about a possible pseudonym. Through research of available sources and newspaper records, it has now been conclusively determined that the author is indeed Ivan Žuvela from Vela Luka, a member of the Šabo family, and a law student who passed away at the age of 23, just a year after creating this manuscript. In addition to introducing the author, this text provides a detailed exploration of the manuscript and its exceptional significance for studying the everyday life of the past, particularly the harvesting customs on the western part of the island of Korčula

Towards an Augmented Reality Game for Learning about Ivan Vazov's Literary Works

    No full text
This paper presents a concept for a serious game based on an augmented reality representation of a mural artwork located in the National Library “Ivan Vazov” in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The mural features the renowned Bulgarian author Ivan Vazov in the center, surrounded by characters from his literary works. By using a head-mounted display in front of the mural, the players would see movement of the characters and will be able to interact with them in a gamified augmented reality environment. The serious game proposed in this paper offers a solution to the engagement of players with literature and textual heritage within a broader cultural context
