Effect of a perturbed acoustic-phonon distribution on hot-electron transport: a Monte Carlo analysis

    No full text
A Monte Carlo simulation code has been developed to study the effect of phonon perturbations in hot-electron transport in semiconductors. The modifications of carrier drift velocity and mean energy induced by the perturbed acoustic-phonon distribution are studied at low temperatures in p-Ge. Under appropriate conditions, current saturation is obtained as a result of the steady-state phonon perturbation. The Monte Carlo analysis has been complemented and compared with an analytical approach based on a heated and displaced Maxwellian distribution for the electron gas

Tracer sa voie/x : une ethnocritique du cycle indochinois de Marguerite Duras

    No full text
This ethnocritic research aims at exploring the cultural poetry existing within Marguerite Duras’ Indochinese cycle. Our text corpus is composed of Un Barrage contre le Pacifique (1950), L’Eden Cinéma (1977), L’Amant (1984) and L’Amant de la Chine du Nord (1991), and follows the « autobiographical » narrative path of Duras’colonial childhood through the reminicence of constantly reworked themes and patterns. The purpose of our work is to question the expression of a pluralistic culture. Cultural practices, language polyphonies, cultural dialogics, intertextualities and interpenetrations between diverse cultures are fundamental issues to understand Duras’ writings. Furthermore, my thesis is based on a cultural hermeneutic approach, so as to grasp the symbolic systems of the texts and by that means shine a light on the ritual structure of the narration. According to our perspective, Duras’ characters and their trajectories are intimately connected to the notion of initiation. What’s more, this essay argues that initatory issuues impacts the narrator (as a fictional projection of the author) as well as her real and historical creative journey. Analyzincontinua and belligerences between literacy and orality (and thus corporeality) eventualy leads to a better understanding of the creative process.

Collaborative Active Learning Method (CALM): A Case Study of USIU Post Graduate Course

    No full text
According to Cooperstein and Kocevar-Weidinger (2003), constructivist learning moves from experience to knowledge. Prince (2003) differentiates traditional learning with four common forms of effective learning and several studies have focused on active learning (Paulson and Foust, 1998; Mascarenhas, 1991; Aison, 2010; and Carlson and Winquist; 2011); and effective learning approaches (FAO, 1991; Defoer, 2009; Shen, Wu, Achhpiliya, Bieber and Hiltz, 2004). This presentation assess effectiveness of collaborative active learning method under development for a research methods course premised on three key activities; assessment of effectiveness of cooperative learning; review of incremental learning; and evaluation of participatory learning experiences by collecting feedback from participating students. The analysis will constitute both simple descriptive research design and qualitative assessment. Student’s group research project is the basis for learning concepts. Students assess extent to which the university is achieving its learning outcomes by collecting data from first year experience and capstone classes through triangulation of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Their research design approaches and rationale become the basis for class discussion of various research methods and presentation at end of semester. Presentation to involve discussion of similar methods by participants

Healthcare Utilisation and Costs Associated with Adding Montelukast to Current Therapy in Patients with Mild to Moderate Asthma and Co-Morbid Allergic Rhinitis: PRAACTICAL Study

Objective: To evaluate the healthcare resource use and costs associated with adding montelukast to therapy in patients with mild to moderate persistent asthma and co-morbid seasonal allergic rhinitis whose asthma is inadequately controlled by their current asthma therapy. Methods: A multicentre, pre-post retrospective cohort study was conducted in three European countries (Italy, Poland and Spain). Consecutive patients who were receiving inhaled corticosteroid therapy (monotherapy or combination therapy with long-acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonists) and who started concomitant treatment with montelukast between January 1999 and December 2002 were identified from clinical charts. Asthma/seasonal allergic rhinitis-related concomitant medications and asthma-related outpatient care, ED visits and hospitalisations for the periods 12 months before and 12 months after montelukast initiation were recorded from patient charts and combined with country-specific published unit costs (adjusted to 2004 values). The analysis was performed from a third-party-payer perspective and thus direct healthcare resource utilisation due to asthma/seasonal allergic rhinitis and associated costs for each country were estimated. Results: A total of 98 physicians provided data for 696 asthmatic patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (Italy: n = 158; Poland: n = 334; and Spain: n = 204). The mean age of patients was 32.7 years, 57.5% were female and patients had asthma that was considered either mild-persistent (54.5%) or moderate-persistent (45.5%) according to the Global Initiative for Asthma classifications. The introduction of montelukast (10 mg/day daily cost range _0.8-1.68) was associated with increases in the total annual mean healthcare cost per patient of 11.9%, 60.4% and 5.5% for Italy, Poland and Spain, respectively. However, mean annual costs for asthma-related outpatient care, ED visits and hospitalisations dropped significantly in all three countries (Italy: from _805.00 to _281.60 [p_Allergic-rhinitis, Asthma, Cost-analysis, Montelukast, Resource-use

Allergic rhinitis and its impact on asthma (ARIA): achievements in 10 years and future needs

    No full text
Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma represent global health problems for all age groups. Asthma and rhinitis frequently coexist in the same subjects. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) was initiated during a World Health Organization workshop in 1999 (published in 2001). ARIA has reclassified AR as mild/moderate-severe and intermittent/persistent. This classification closely reflects patients' needs and underlines the close relationship between rhinitis and asthma. Patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are confronted with various treatment choices for the management of AR. This contributes to considerable variation in clinical practice, and worldwide, patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals are faced with uncertainty about the relative merits and downsides of the various treatment options. In its 2010 Revision, ARIA developed clinical practice guidelines for the management of AR and asthma comorbidities based on the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. ARIA is disseminated and implemented in more than 50 countries of the world. Ten years after the publication of the ARIA World Health Organization workshop report, it is important to make a summary of its achievements and identify the still unmet clinical, research, and implementation needs to strengthen the 2011 European Union Priority on allergy and asthma in children
