A espécie M y rciaria dubia (H.B.K.)

Continuous production and in situ extraction of isovaleraldehyde in a membrane bioreactor

    No full text
Bioconversions are generally low productivity processes when compared to chemical synthetic reactions. The productivity of a bioconversion can be maximized if it is carried out in the presence of substrate/product concentrations at which the biocatalyst shows optimal activity and stability. One way to achieve this is to develop a process with continuous addition of the substrate and selective removal of the product. The microbial oxidation of isoamyl alcohol to isovaleraldehyde by a newly isolated Gluconobacter oxydans strain has been reported recently. High conversion yields (>90%) and good rates (maximum yield after 90 min) were obtained in a batch mode. With this strain, although aldehyde dehydrogenase(s) leading to acid formation are present, further oxidation of the aldehyde to acid is significantly slower so that transient accumulation of the aldehyde is possible. The productivity of this bioconversion can be improved by setting up a continuous process with addition of substrate at an adequate flow rate. In situ removal of the aldehyde is imperative to avoid acid production and to reduce evaporation of the product. This chapter describes a membrane-based extractive procedure to achieve an in situ, nondispersive recovery of the aldehyde

Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

This dataset is comprised of keylogging data from the author C M Taylor captured October 2014; Keystroke files: 17/10/2014 – 07/11/2014. This data was created using keylogging software Spectre Pro (SpectreSoft) installed on a dedicated IBM Thinkpad laptop and then exported as TXT and RTF files. They can be used for image and text analysis, teaching, art projects, or anything else of inspiration

Malgrange's vanishing theorem for weakly pseudoconcave CR manifolds

    No full text
The authors prove the following CR version of Malgrange's theorem: Assume MMM is a smooth, non-compact, weakly pseudoconcave CR manifold of type (n,k)(n,k)(n,k) of finite kind. Then the highest M\overline{\partial}_M∂−M cohomology HMp,n(M)H^{p,n}_{\overline{\partial}_M}(M)Hp,n∂−M(M) vanishes for 0pn+k0\le p\le n+k0≤p≤n+k. This generalises a similar result for real analytic CR manifolds by the third author [in Hyperbolic problems and regularity questions, 137--150, Birkhäuser, Basel, 2007; MR2298789 (2008d:32034)]. Furthermore, they prove the following approximation theorem: If MMM is as above and UVMU\subset\subset V \subset\subset MU⊂⊂V⊂⊂M are two open sets such that V\sbs UV∖U has no compact connected component then for 0pn+k0\le p\le n+k0≤p≤n+k the restriction map Zp,n1(V)Zp,n1(U)Z^{p,n-1}(\overline{V})\to Z^{p,n-1}(U)Zp,n−1(V−)→Zp,n−1(U) has dense image, with respect to the \scr C^\inftyC∞ topology on UUU.
