    The NA60 experiment readout architecture

    No full text
The NA60 experiment was designed to identify signatures of a new state of matter, the Quark Gluon Plasma, in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton. The apparatus is composed of four main detectors: a muon spectrometer (MS), a zero degree calorimeter (ZDC), a silicon vertex telescope (VT), and a silicon microstrip beam tracker (BT). The readout of the whole experiment is based on a PCI architecture. The basic unit is a general purpose PCI card, interfaced to the different subdetectors via custom mezzanine cards. This allowed us to successfully implement several completely different readout protocols (from the VME like protocol of the MS to the custom protocol of the pixel telescope). The system was fully tested with proton and ion beams, and several million events were collected in 2002 and 2003. This paper presents the readout architecture of NA60, with particular emphasis on the PCI layer common to all the subdetectors. RI Tinoco Mendes, Andre David/D-4314-201

Phi production in p-A and In-In collisions

    No full text
The NA60 experiment studied Phi meson production in p-A and In-In collisions at the CERN SPS. The ratio Phi / Omega shows an increase by a factor ?2 from peripheral to central collisions. The inverse slope parameter T of the p T spectrum increases with centrality, and seems to agree with the previous NA49 measurements. ? 2006

Sources : - William L. The Covid Crisis and CEO Pay Balance

    No full text
This paper focuses on the socio-economic challenges created by the Covid crisis. More specifically, it examines the impact of the COVID crisis on CEO Pay balance in Nasdaq. The research focuses on the top 10 most valuable firms traded on the NASDAQ. The 2017-2019 period is taken as the pre-Covid period, the 2020-2022 period is taken as the post-Covid period, and the CEO Pay balance is compared across these two periods. For the CEO Pay balance, four variables are used. These are the Pay ratio (which compares the CEO's pay to the average employee’s pay), the CEO/President ratio, the CEO/Top Vice President ratio, and the CEO/Average Vice President ratio. First, the trends in each CEO pay balance variable over the sample period are examined. During the 2017-2022 period, the CEO Pay ratio more than doubled (i.e. a 150% increase), while the CEO/President ratio doubled (i.e. a 100% increase). These findings show that, during this period, the average employee and the President suffered relative to the CEO regarding their pay. When the CEO/Top VP and the CEO/Average VP are examined, the results show little or no difference. Therefore, VPs did well during this period. Non-parametric tests are then performed to compare the pre-Covid and post-Covid periods. The results show that the increase in the CEO pay ratio (i.e. compared to the average worker) was statistically significant. At the same time, the change in the other three variables were insignificant. Finally, regressions are run to see whether there was a significant change in each pay balance variable after COVID-19. After controlling for firm size, growth, leverage, and profitability, there is no significant difference in the CEO pay balance measures pre- versus post-COVID

A new ultra radiation hard cryogenic silicon tracker for heavy ion beams

    No full text
We have designed and built a new hodoscope for heavy ion beams consisting of two tracking stations equipped with silicon microstrip detectors operated at 130 K. Preliminary results from tests performed in the high intensity CERN-SPS Pb ion beam show that we were able to detect and identify each incoming ion up to a beam intensity of similar to 10(7) ions/s. The beam profile could be monitored on-line with 50 mum resolution. The detector performed satisfactory even after a dose of 90 +/- 40 Grad

Nuclear dependence of light neutral meson production in p-A collisions at 400 GeV with NA60

    No full text
International audienceThe NA60 experiment has studied low-mass muon pair production in proton–nucleus collisions with a system of Be, Cu, In, W, Pb and U targets, using a 400 GeV proton beam at the CERN SPS. The transverse momentum spectra of the ρ/ω\rho /\omega and ϕ\phi mesons are measured in the full pTp_{\mathrm {T}} range accessible, from pT=0p_{\mathrm {T}}= 0 up to 2GeV/c2 \, {\hbox {GeV/c}} . The nuclear dependence of the production cross sections of the η\eta , ω\omega and ϕ\phi mesons has been found to be consistent with the power law σpAAα\sigma _{\mathrm {pA}} \propto {\mathrm {A}}^\alpha , with the α\alpha parameter increasing as a function of pTp_{\mathrm {T}} for all the particles, and an approximate hierarchy αηαϕ>αω\alpha _\eta \approx \alpha _\phi > \alpha _\omega . The cross section ratios ση/σω\sigma _\eta /\sigma _\omega , σρ/σω\sigma _\rho /\sigma _\omega and σϕ/σω\sigma _\phi /\sigma _\omega have been studied as a function of the size A of the production target, and an increase of the η\eta and ϕ\phi yields relative to the ω\omega is observed from p–Be to p–U collisions

    Phi meson production in NA60

    No full text
NA60 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS which measured dimuon production in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. The experiment collected muon pair samples of unprecedented quality in heavy-ion experiments. This paper presents a high quality measurement of the p(T) distribution of the phi meson, covering a broad p(T) window. The data were collected in 2003 in In-In collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. The results, presented as a function of centrality, were studied against several possible sources of systematic effects and proved to be fairly stable. We show that the inverse m(T) slope measured in In-In collisions, in the phi -> mu mu decay channel, depends significantly on the range used to perform the fit. When the fit is performed at low transverse momentum, the effective inverse slope increases from peripheral to central collisions, as measured by other experiments. We finally show that our measurement for In-In is compatible with the overall systematics of T slope versus mass, measured in different collision systems by the NA49 experiment. Rapidity-rank structure of p anti-p pairs in hadronic Z0 decays

    No full text
The rapidity-rank structure of pp̄ pairs is used to analyze the mechanism of baryon production in hadronic Z0 decay. The relative occurrence of the rapidity-ordered configuration p M p̄, where M is a meson, and that of pp̄ adjacent pairs is compared. The data are found to be consistent with predictions from a mechanism producing adjacent-rank pp̄ pairs, without requiring 'string-ordered' p M p̄ configurations. An upper limit of 15% at 90% confidence is determined for the p M p̄ contribution. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.0SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
