The author of Vita Fructuosi, probably a monk follower of Saint Fructuosus of Braga in the area of Gallaecia, shows in this biography an evident sense of rooting in the monastic Tradition, specially in the Egyptianeastern one, and also he declares a strong Roman-Catholic and Hispanic conscience. As the highest expression of it, he presents Saint Fructuosus with the same merits of the Egyptian monks and, joined to Saint Isidorus of Seville, as a light for Spain, for the Western and for the whole Catholic Church: they both are two causes of glory for a Visigothic Spain which fells herself as Roman and Catholic.
The article focuses on a very little explored subject to date, within the field of travel literature: the description of Wallachia, made by Diego Galán. Only one article has been published until today on this topic. His author was Alejandro Ciorãnescu and the article was published 50 years ago. Our study intends to provide a different analysis of the text, throughout a double, historical and philological perspective that contributes to understand better the creation and integration of the Romanian space and culture to the Spanish collective imaginary.
A Data Envelopment Analysis Approach to the Assessment of Natural Parks’ Economic Efficiency and Sustainability. The Case of Italian National Parks
Wilderness protection is a growing necessity for modern societies, and this is particularly true for areas where population density is extremely high, as for example Europe. Conservation, however, implies very high opportunity costs. It is thus crucial to create incentives to efficient management practices, to promote benchmarking and to improve conservation management. In the present paper we propose a methodology based on Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA, a non parametric benchmarking technique specifically developed to assess the relative efficiency of decision-making units. In particular, the objective of the discussed methodology is to assess the relative efficiency of the management units of the protected area and to indicate how it could be improved, by providing a set of guidelines. The main advantage of this methodology is that it allows to assess the efficiency of natural parks’ management not only internally (comparing the performance of the park to itself in time) but also by external benchmarking, thus providing new and different perspectives on potential improvements. Although the proposed methodology is fairly general, we have applied it to the context of Italian National Parks in order to produce a representative case study. Specifically, the choice of adequate cost and benefit indicators is a very important and delicate phase of any benchmark analysis. For this purpose, a questionnaire was used to investigate the opinions of Italian National Parks managers and stakeholders and to define the relevant indicators for the analysis. Finally, relevant policy implications for the case study are given.Data envelopment analysis, Natural park management
A translation and edition of the Sacrorum Parallelorum Liber Primus of Franciscus Junius : a study in sixteenth century hermeneutics
In his
preface
to the Sacrorum Parallelorum Libri Tres, Junius
expresses
the confidence that, if he has
not attained the
goal
in
writing
the book
which
he
yearned
to achieve,
he has
at least pointed out to
others the
way of proving more successful.
As the first
monograph on
the use of the Old Testament in the New, the Sacri Paralleli
opened up
new exegetical
territory into
which
hosts
of explorers and,
indeed,
settlers
have
since moved.
The
earlier scouts
in this
region often remind us that
they are travelling in the pioneering
footsteps
of
Franciscus Junius.
Thus, Andreas Kesler in the seventeenth
century
makes use of the Sacri
Paralleli,
as
does the great
Surenhusius
of
Amsterdam in the
eighteenth
century.
Even
as recently as a
hundred
years ago
Eduard Bdhl, in the
historical introduction to his
own
dissertation
on the Old Testament
citations in the New Testament,
wrote:
"Dass
ein
Mann
wie
Franciscus
Junius,
welcher mit
Tremellius das berühmte lateinische Bibelwerk
herausgab,
viel
Gutes bietet, lasst
sich erwarten". Yet,
more recent
surveys of past
literature
on the bi-testamental
passages omit any mention
of
the original spade-work
in the field. Ellis, for
example,
begins his
summary of "the more
direct
study of
NT
quotations" with
the notes which
Drusius
wrote around
1594. No
account of such research,
however,
can
justly
pass over the thorough
work of
Franciscus Junius. Some have
considered
it,
with good reason,
the most
important book of one of
the
most
influential
exegetes
in the Age
of
Orthodoxy. As Cuno
observes,
the Sacri Paralleli
were
truly epoch-making
in the history
of exegesis.
The
present study of
the Sacrorum Parallelorum Liber Primus
begins
with a rather
full
account of
the life
of
Junius for two
reasons.
First, there is
no
delineation
of
his life
available
in English longer than
the brief
article
in the New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia
of
Religious
Knowledge.
Secondly, the life
of
Junius
not only
is
very
interesting,
but
also sheds much
light
on
the
rationale of the Sacri Paralleli. There
follow discussions
of
this rationale,
the history
of the Sacri Paralleli
and
the various editions, and
the hermeneutical
principles employed
by Junius
in the Liber Primus. In the course of
his investigation
of the several
editions of
the Sacri Paralleli, the author
has
examined all copies of
the
book
which
he
could
locate in the
public repositories of
Scotland and so
hopes that his treatment may prove useful to the
rare
book librarians
of
the collections concerned.
The translation of
the Liber Primus
was executed on the basis
of
the first folio
edition
(1607)
of the
works of
Junius, this
printing
being
a
reliable, specimen of
the text
and the
earliest copy available
in the Library
of
the University
of
St Andrews. Some
minor
textual
corruptions,
however,
in the 1607
edition
have been
corrected on
the basis
of
the original
edition of
1588. Likewise, the Biblical
and patristic citations which appeared
in the margins of
the
original edition
have been
noted as marginal
references
here, rather than being into the text in the manner of the folio
editions
(which
sometimes match these
citations to the
wrong, sentences
in the text). The translation here,
nevertheless,
follows
the
paragraph
divisions
of the folio
printings, since such
divisions
are so
few in the original edition.
The third volume of this dissertation
contains several pertinent
appendices:
The first is
a photographic copy of
the
specimen of the original edition of the Sacrorum Parallelorum Liber Primus in the possession
of the Library of
New College, Edinburgh. Mention has been
made
in the
course of this appendix
if
a note relating
to
a given page occurs
in the
"Errata", listed
at the
end of the copy of the Sacri Paralleli
used
here.
Copies
of the 1607
printing of the Sacri Paralleli are
available
in
so many
British libraries that to
provide a copy of the Liber
Primus of
that
edition
here
would
be
superfluous.
The
second appendix
is
a photographic copy of the "Praefatio" to the Sacri Paralleli (New Col-
lege
specimen again).
The Roman
numeral at the bottom
of each page
has
been
supplied
here to facilitate
reference
to this "Praefatio" in the course
of
this study.
There follows
an annotated translation of
the "Praefatio"
Energy Efficiency in Transition Economies: Is There Convergence Towards the EU Average?
This paper investigates the relationship between energy intensity in the 12 countries of Eastern Europe that can be considered as in transition to a full market economy, and that of the present EU members. The raw data shows some evidence of convergence, and a carefully estimated econometric model of lagged adjustment confirms this. On average, a 1% decrease in the per capita income gap between developed and transition economies leads to a decrease in the energy intensity growth rate of a transition country by 0.7%. There are differences in the rate of convergence across countries, and these depend on two parameters that are allowed to vary across countries: ?, the elasticity of desired energy intensity with respect to the per capita income gap; and µ, the rate at which actual energy intensity adjusts to the desired energy intensity. The countries with the fastest convergence rates given these parameters are the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia and Turkey. The forecast values for energy intensity and actual energy demand levels of seven transition countries were estimated. Results show that the energy intensities of transition countries except Estonia converge to EU levels significantly. On the other hand, actual energy demand levels between 2000 and 2020 show an increasing demand in all 7 countries despite the reductions in energy intensity. Therefore, it will not be feasible to use as a target a non-increasing level of total energy consumption.Energy, Convergence, Transition
Translations were a crucial channel for the reception of Italian Humanism in the Iberian Peninsula. This intellectual activity not only led to the recuperation of a significant part of the classical Greco-Roman legacy, but also fomented engagement with the works and ideas of contemporary Italian authors. On the one hand, this article underscores the critical role of translation in cultural transfers between both peninsulas and shows the change in authors selected to translate over the course of fifteenth century. On the other hand, it analyzes the implications of these author selections, arguing that they reveal at once an ideological transformation, a change in the conception of the very act of translation, and the adoption of new terminology
This thesis tries to configure the space occupied by literature in Revista USP magazine, starting from the reflection about the art produced in the 80's and 90's. The popular music, the theater and the movies are submitted to an evaluation of their recent creations while the literature does not receive the same kind of critical approach. Investigating motivations and consequences of this attitude is the main proposition of this research, which intends to develop the following hypothesis: a great amount of texts published in Revista USP composes a mosaic, in which the reflection about Brazilian literature configures itself through the constitution of a monumental axle, formed by Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, written by Machado de Assis and Grande sertão: veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa. These books mark and support the limits of the canon proposed by the magazine, which considers Guimarães Rosa's narrative as the last sign of creativity in Brazilian literature. Although, it's possible to perceive some shadows that disturb the clearness of this axle. The first one is Grande sertão: veredas seen as a "neobarroco" text, and the second is an anthology of Brazilian poetry published at Universidad de México magazine
Sparsentan in patients with IgA nephropathy: a prespecified interim analysis from a randomised, double-blind, active-controlled clinical trial
Background: Sparsentan is a novel, non-immunosuppressive, single-molecule, dual endothelin and angiotensin receptor antagonist being examined in an ongoing phase 3 trial in adults with IgA nephropathy. We report the prespecified interim analysis of the primary proteinuria efficacy endpoint, and safety. Methods: PROTECT is an international, randomised, double-blind, active-controlled study, being conducted in 134 clinical practice sites in 18 countries. The study examines sparsentan versus irbesartan in adults (aged ≥18 years) with biopsy-proven IgA nephropathy and proteinuria of 1·0 g/day or higher despite maximised renin-angiotensin system inhibitor treatment for at least 12 weeks. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive sparsentan 400 mg once daily or irbesartan 300 mg once daily, stratified by estimated glomerular filtration rate at screening (30 to 1·75 g/day). The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline to week 36 in urine protein-creatinine ratio based on a 24-h urine sample, assessed using mixed model repeated measures. Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were safety endpoints. All endpoints were examined in all participants who received at least one dose of randomised treatment. The study is ongoing and is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03762850. Findings: Between Dec 20, 2018, and May 26, 2021, 404 participants were randomly assigned to sparsentan (n=202) or irbesartan (n=202) and received treatment. At week 36, the geometric least squares mean percent change from baseline in urine protein-creatinine ratio was statistically significantly greater in the sparsentan group (-49·8%) than the irbesartan group (-15·1%), resulting in a between-group relative reduction of 41% (least squares mean ratio=0·59; 95% CI 0·51-0·69; p<0·0001). TEAEs with sparsentan were similar to irbesartan. There were no cases of severe oedema, heart failure, hepatotoxicity, or oedema-related discontinuations. Bodyweight changes from baseline were not different between the sparsentan and irbesartan groups. Interpretation: Once-daily treatment with sparsentan produced meaningful reduction in proteinuria compared with irbesartan in adults with IgA nephropathy. Safety of sparsentan was similar to irbesartan. Future analyses after completion of the 2-year double-blind period will show whether these beneficial effects translate into a long-term nephroprotective potential of sparsentan.
