Working memory capacity and fluent L2 Speech production
Working memory capacity and fluency, accuracy, complexity, and lexical density in L2 speech production
This study investigated whether there was a relationship between working memory capacity and L2 speech production. The participants were 13 advanced learners of English as a second language at the University of Minnesota. Participants’ working memory capacity was assessed by means of the speaking span test (Daneman, 1991) in the L2. L2 speech production was elicited by means of a picture description task and a narrative task. Four aspects of speech production were assessed: fluency, accuracy, complexity, and weighted lexical density. Statistical analyses revealed that, in both tasks,
working memory capacity, as measured by the speaking span test, correlates positively with fluency, accuracy, and complexity, as predicted, and negatively with weighted lexical density, contrary to predictions. The analyses also revealed that the speaking span test is a significant predictor of fluency,
accuracy, and complexity in L2 speech and that it partially accounts for variation in L2 oral performance. The analyses further indicate a tendency for an interaction between fluency, accuracy, complexity, and weighted lexical density. To explain the relationship between working memory capacity and the measures of L2 speech production, it is proposed that L2 grammatical encoding is a complex subtask of L2 speech production that requires the control and regulation of attention.
Abstract : This dissertation discusses some issues related to the typological pattern of Portuguese expression of motion events, guided by the theory of Leonard Talmy (2000). From the analysis of some prefixes and verbs, we objective is to demonstrate that in some instances, the expression of the event does not fit fully the characteristics of typological pattern proposed by the theorist. In the initial classification Talmy classifies Romance languages into a typological category in which the verb converges to each other, so the semantic components MOTION and PATH. If MODE or CAUSE are explicit will usually be by a construction gerundive or adverbial. To the contrary, Germanic language the verbs lexicalizes both semantic components of MOTION and MODE or CAUSE and the PATH is expressed by a grammatical element associated with the verb. Based on some concepts of Cognitive Semantics and diachronic study of the Latin prefix, it will be possible to present some evidence that the expression of motion events in Portuguese can also be made by a different typological pattern. We analyze some instances of the lexicalization pattern in Portuguese that makes use of elements of another type and we propose to analyze some verbs typological pattern of Portuguese, indicating by means of comparisons between languages of distinct pattern grammatical and semantic features that show features of other lexical patterns in the language
The Effects of age and proficiency on verbal morphological processing in english as L1 and L2
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura CorrespondenteThe linguistic focus of the present study is English verbal morphology. More specifically, regular and irregular verbs in English are the items under investigation. For the last 25 years, in the context of the past tense debate, dual-mechanism models and single-mechanism models of verbal morphological processing have presented evidence for the storage vs. composition theory and connectionist theory, respectively (Marslen-Wilson & Tyler, 1998). On the one hand, dual-mechanism models, such as the Declarative/Procedural Model, suggest that in English as L1, regular verbs are processed in procedural memory with the application of a rule, the addition of the -ed suffix, while irregular verbs are stored in declarative memory (Ullman, 2001, 2004, 2005). In English as L2, the D/P Model suggests that, at high proficiency levels, regular verbs are also processed in procedural memory whereas irregular verbs are stored in declarative memory (Ullman, 2001, 2004, 2005). In contrast, at beginning stages of L2 learning, regular and irregular verbs are stored in declarative memory (Ullman, 2001, 2004, 2005). Single-mechanism models, on the other hand, have presented evidence in favor of a connectionist theory of verbal morphological processing, in which regular and irregular verbs in English as L1are stored in associative memory, based on phonological and semantic connections (Joanisse & Seidenberg, 2005). In this context, the present study has 2 objectives: (1) to investigate the effects of age and proficiency on the processing of regular and irregular verbs in English as L1 and L2 in healthy adults; (2) to investigate the effect of individual differences on the processing of regular and irregular verbs in English. Thirty one participants, 11 Brazilian advanced late bilinguals (Portuguese-English), 11 Brazilian beginner late bilinguals (Portuguese-English) and 9 native speakers of American English, were required to perform a battery of tasks. The following materials were employed in this study: (a) a background questionnaire; (b) two proficiency tests (KET / PET); (c) a frequency effects task of regular and irregular English verbal morphology (Pinker & Ullman, 2002; Prado & Ullman, 2009, VanderLely & Ullman 2001; Walenski, Mostofsky & Ullman, 2007); (d) a non-linguistic working memory task called "the letter-number ordering task" (Maurits, Bosch & Hugdahl, 2006; Tagarelli, Borges-Mota & Rebuschat, 2011; Wechsler, 1997); and (e) a non-linguistic inhibitory control task called "the Simon arrows task" (Bialystok, 2006; Bialystok, Craik & Luk, 2008). The frequency effects task was included with the objective of investigating if dissociations exist between the processing of regular and irregular English verb forms. The inhibitory control and working memory tasks were included with the objective of investigating whether individual differences, measured through these executive functions, have an effect on English verbal morphological processing. Results show that native speakers and late beginner bilinguals store regular and irregular verbs. Late advanced bilinguals store regular verbs and compute irregular verbs. These results are explained in terms of associative memory overload and the application of subregularities (Stockall & Marantz, 2006). The results obtained through the frequency effects task support single-mechanism theories of verbal morphological processing. Finally, the results of the present study show that individual differences did not influence participants´ performance on the frequency effects task of regular and irregular morphological processingO foco linguístico do presente estudo é a morfologia verbal do inglês.
Syntactic Priming Effects on the Processing of the Passive Voice by Brazilian Portuguese Adult Native Speakers: a Behavioural Study
Syntactic priming, or structural priming, is a phenomenon in which the exposure to a syntactic structure facilitates the processing of a following structure (Pickering & Branigan, 1999) during language production or comprehension. The present behavioural study investigated syntactic priming effects on the processing of the passive voice by 20 Brazilian Portuguese adult native speakers performing a self-paced reading task. The results indicated that BP adult native speakers show shorter response times when processing a passive structure after having previously processed the same structure with the same main verb. These findings are in line with previous research on syntactic priming effects during comprehension of BP passive sentences conducted with children (Kramer, 2017; Kuerten, 2017) that suggested that syntactic processing during comprehension is, to some extent, lexically mediated
WORKING MEMORY CAPACITY AND LEXICAL DENSITY IN L2 SPEECH PRODUCTION
Phonological Awareness and L2 Learning by children: A systematic research synthesis
The present study critically reports the results of a systematic research of empirical studies in phonological awareness and L2 learning in children at the age of literacy acquisition. The aim of the present study is to determine (1) how empirical studies assess phonological awareness, (2) the age of the population investigated in these studies, (3) the possible relation between the ages of participants and PA tests and (4) the implications of the studies selected in terms of the role of phonological awareness for L2 learning by children. The method consisted of searching the keywords ‘Phonological Awareness’, ‘L2 Learning’, ‘English’ and ‘Children’ in the following databases: American Psychological Association, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, Web of Science and ScienceDirect. To be included in the inclusion criteria, the first language of the studies should be a western language, preferably a romance language. Also, the second language (L2) approached in the studies should be English. In order to achieve the objectives of this research synthesis, the articles selected for the study should also have used a phonological awareness test and should have been published between the years of 2006 and 2019. Following these criteria, 20 articles were selected and 19 articles were used for analysis. The analysis of the articles selected showed that there is no clear relation between the use of instruments to assess phonological awareness and the age of the population investigated, except in the case of the PALS test (Phonological Awareness and Literacy Screening), which seems to be used with younger children in kindergarten age. About the implications of PA for L2 learning, most of the studies focused on reading, followed by vocabulary, spelling and cross-language transfer, indicating that PA plays an important role in L2 reading acquisition. The articles also provided results that did not fulfill the objectives of the present study, showing the lack of studies that are focused on the role of PA for L2 acquisition among alphabetic languages
