A cv.
Data on the positive synergic action of dimethylacetamide and trehalose on quality of cryopreserved chicken sperm
AbstractThis data article contains supporting information regarding the research article entitled “Combined effect of permeant and non-permeant cryoprotectants on the quality of frozen/thawed chicken sperm”(Mosca et. al., 2016) [1]. The combined effect of the permeant cryoprotectants agent dimethylacetamide and the non-permeant cryoprotectants agent trehalose on the quality of frozen-thawed chicken semen was assessed. In particular, the quantitative dimethylacetamide/trehalose ratio was investigated freezing semen samples according to the following treatments: trehalose 0.1M+0% dimethylacetamide (DMA-0), trehalose 0.1M+3% dimethylacetamide (DMA-3), trehalose 0.1M+6% dimethylacetamide (DMA-6)
Multilayer (Al,Ga)N Structures for Solar-Blind Detection
We report on solar-blind metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) detectors fabricated on stacks of (Al,Ga)N layers with different AI mole fraction. These structures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates to allow backside illumination and a low-temperature GaN buffer layer. They consist of a 9-3-0.4-μm active layer grown on a thick (Al,Ga)N window layer (≈ 1 μm) that is transparent at the wavelength of interest. Different Al contents were used in the window layer. We observed that, in general, samples with a high Al content were cracked, which is explained in terms of mechanical strain. MSM photodetectors fabricated on these samples showed large leakage currents that were correlated with the crack density. In order to reduce the strain and eliminate the cracks, we inserted an AIN layer between the buffer and window layer. A crack-free sample was obtained and the solar-blind photodetector fabricated on this structure showed record performance
The internet as a new channel for political participation?
This chapter focuses on the political use of the internet considering both individual and organisational use. Firstly, we look at how individuals which took part in the Athens European Social Forum (ESF) use the internet politically. Secondly, we shed light on how social movement families and organisations mobilized in the Italian Global Justice Movement (GJM) use the web, highlighting limits and opportunities of using the web politically.
Data were gathered using different research instruments: a survey of participants in the European Social Forum in Athens and a series of interviews with spokespersons of different social movement families of the Italian GJM.
While quantitative data allows for controlling relations among variables concerning the political use of the internet by individuals, qualitative data provides more detailed information on internet use in the everyday life of activists and organisations
The role of social cooperatives in the fight against criminal organization: the Italian experiences
Criminal organisations such as mafia and camorra build network between affiliates, politicians and individuals to rule in the territories. They use social ties and network to construct a social consent which allows them to operate, uncontested, in the production of illegal wealth for their members. Mosca and Villani (2011) show that in order to break the vicious circle between the social and cultural impoverishment and the strengthening of an economy sustained by crime it is necessary to utilize the same determinants of the social consent used by criminal organisations. The social and economic development of the territories created by promoting initiatives that favour the accumulation of “pure” social capital such us those sustained by social economy can avoid criminal organizations to continue to gain the consent of a large part of the population living in the territories in which they operate. These strategies seem to be in action in some Italian regions promoted by social cooperatives that the law n. 109/1996 and the recent antimafia code (d.lgs n.159/2011) recognise such as productive nonprofit organisation able to reuse illegal assets for social purposes. In Campania thanks also to the recent regional law for the reuse of illegal assets L.R. n.7/2012 and a particular model of welfare promoted by the art. 46 of L.R. n.1, illegal assets confiscated to criminal organisation represent inputs of a local development process based on the reconversion of the social capital used by mafia into a “pure” social capital useful for legal economic activities.
The number of reutilised illegal assets can be a proxy of a process of independence from criminal organisation that can signal the force of the territory to faith it.
The paper using the available data intends to show that the seizure and the confiscation of the illegal acquired assets, and suitable policies aimed at promoting and supporting the development of social cooperatives and non-profit organizations such us social cooperatives, which assume an important role in the labor market, can have a direct impact on the individuals’ choices, reducing the incentive for illegal activity
Intolerance of uncertainty: A temporary experimental induction procedure
Background and Objectives
Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is a trans-diagnostic construct involved in anxiety and related disorders. Research focused on cross-sectional reporting, manipulating attitudes toward objective and impersonal events or on treatments designed to reduce IU in clinical populations. The current paper presents an experimental procedure for laboratory manipulations of IU and tests mediation hypotheses following the Intolerance of Uncertainty Model.
Methods
On pre-test, undergraduate volunteers (Study 1, n = 43;68% women. Study 2, n = 169;83.8% women) were asked to provide an idiosyncratic future negative life event. State-IU, Worry, Positive and Negative Affect were assessed after that a standardized procedure was used to identify event’s potential negative consequences. The same variables were assessed on post-test, after that participants were asked to read-through increasing and decreasing IU statements.
Results
Temporary changes on IU were consistently reproduced in both studies. Participants receiving increasing IU instructions reported greater state-IU, Worry and Negative Affect than those receiving decreasing IU instructions. However, this latter condition was not different from a control one (Study 2). Both studies revealed significant indirect effects of IU induction instructions on Worry and Negative Affect through state-IU.
Limitations
Both studies used undergraduate psychology students samples, younger than average population and predominantly female. Experimental manipulation and outcome measures belongs to the same semantic domain, uncertainty, potentially limiting generalizability.
Conclusions
Results supported the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed IU manipulation for non-clinical sample. Findings parallel clinical research showing that state-IU preceded Worry and Negative Affect states
