Lessons and current Challenges for Urban Sociologists. A Conversation with Robert J. Sampson
In this interview, Robert J. Sampson discusses main lessons and current challenges for urban sociologists, starting from his personal experience and perspective. The interview recaps his important works on factors and events that can determine criminal behavior, the important Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, that he led with his innovative theories and empirical results on violence, race and ethnic segregation, inequality, order and disorder in urban environments, and the shifting structure of community network. The interview also reflects on the process and encounters that led him to the formulation of a theory of race, crime and urban inequality with William J. Wilson (1995). Our discussion spanned over areas of research interests of Professor Sampson, including crime, disorder, life course, civic engagement, inequality, "ecometrics," and the social structure of the city, with particular attention to neighborhood effects. Finally, the interview deals with current challenges for urban sociologists, focusing on two main problems: poor quality of data and limit of funding
Co władca powinien wiedzieć o władaniu – według egipskich mędrców i Niccolò Machiavellego
The paper studies the thought of Ancient Egypt in the context of Niccolò Machiavelli’s work entitled The Prince, which has not yet been examined in the context of political philosophy. The author outlines many similarities between the texts and their authors’ honest and substantive approach to the subject discussed. It seems that through the realistic presentation of selected aspects of power, these works are practical guides for the authorities rather than only postulates regarding the functioning of the state and the ruler. At the same time, the author of the article seeks to stress the value of these works which express the political thought of their time and contain some universal observations
Recepcja pism Niccolò Machiavellego w twórczości literackiej Andrzeja Maksymiliana Fredry
In this article I will try to show to what extent the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli influenced the literary work of Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro. It is worth mentioning that the political thought of the author of The Prince was widely known among the Polish intellectual elite in the 17th century. However, in the old Poland, the Florentine was increasingly criticized, as he was believed to promote a type of politics full of falsehood and cynicism. In his works, Fredro did not perceive Machiavelli in this way. He was referring to the ideas contained in two works – different in content – by the Florentine secretary: The Prince and Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius.W niniejszym artykule postaram się ukazać, w jakim stopniu pisma Niccolò Machiavellego oddziaływały na twórczość literacką Andrzeja Maksymiliana Fredry.
Neighbours' Conviviality without Gatherings. Social Streets in Times of Lockdown
The lockdown period imposed by Italian institutions to their citizens from March to May 2020 to contrast the Coronavirus diffusion had a very deep impact on people's sociality and their daily practices. However, informal groups and associations tried to keep them alive with the help of digital communication technologies, used to enhance conviviality and to support and organize forms of mutual help. This article aims to analyse how Social Streets promoted sociality and mutual help among neighbours in time of lockdown, and how Streeters, here defined as people who are at least inscribed at the Facebook group of their Social Street, have profited from the possibility to have at their disposal an online social place where to interact and be informed about the possibility of giving and receiving help. This article draws from data gathered through two online surveys, administered, respectively, during lockdown phase in the second half of April (838 respondents) and in June 2020, after its end (371 respondents). Our results show that, after seven years since their foundation in 2013, Social Streets still play a pivotal role in the neighbourhood. During lockdown, they gave a contribution in keeping neighbours informed about what was going on in the neighbourhood, in sustaining and producing convivial ties, in organizing mutual help services. In the hard time of lockdown, when most of the usual habits and practices were forcefully suspended, Social Streets proved very important in setting a cognitive, emotional, and organizational framework inside which conviviality and collaboration among neighbours could find greater plausibility.<br /
Modelling and toolpath generation strategies for zero-defect peripheral milling
Peripheral milling is one of the most used technologies in the mechanical industry thanks to its accuracy and versatility. Nonetheless these redeeming qualities may be compromised in cutting operations where the flexibility of both the tool and the workpiece is relevant. In such conditions the tool/workpiece flexibility may cause static deflections or vibrations leading to inacceptable surface errors. Due to the complexity of these mechanisms, the most suitable approach to deal with surface errors is the use of virtual predictive techniques. This thesis presents models and approaches aiming at ensuring the required accuracy on machined components when the tool/workpiece flexibility is limiting the process performances, fitting Industry 4.0 paradigm
In Praise For Monstrosities. The Case of Niccolò Machiavelli
In the paper author refers to the passage from The Prince of Niccolò Machiavelli, in which the famous Florentine says that there are two kinds of combat: one with laws, the other with force. Author defend the claim that by writing this, Machiavelli opened up a new and still unused way of thinking about nature-culture relationship. A follower of this way of thinking withdraws from saying that nature is surpassed by culture, or that nature is nothing else but a subject of an on-going human speculation, and rebuts the sole hypothesis that what there is, is nothing but nature. Modern Western culture entrusted its key opposition to the nature-culture relationship. By and large, political philosophy is a story about surpassing the nature in order to establish a state under the rule of law. According to Machiavelli, the juxtaposition of nature and culture, the narrative on surpassing by politics the laws of nature, just as well as the narrative on us being stuck in it, are all utterly wrong. Accepting the ambiguity of the opposition between nature and culture and assuming that the social contract is indeed fictitious, author would like to question Machiavelli about his vision of subjectivity and politics in a world where “natural objects” appear to be socialized, and “cultural subjects” appear to be dissocial. In the way author puts the question: does Machiavelli recommend monstrosity by writing stories in praise of monstrosity as it may well seem
Per un'edizione delle postille di Niccolò Tommaseo alla Crusca veronese del Cesari
This article examines the handwritten annotations made by Niccolò Tommaseo in the first volume of the Crusca veronese edited by Abbot Antonio Cesari. It retraces the research process carried out by the author, with particular attention to the transcription and analysis of these annotations, aiming to reconstruct the Dalmatian scholar's linguistic reflections and lexicographic methods. The study highlights the systematic nature of Tommaseo's annotations and connects them to his later lexicographic works, such as the Nuovo dizionario de' sinonimi and the Dizionario della lingua italiana. Finally, the article presents a sample critical edition of selected annotations, accompanied by a discussion of the editorial criteria applied
