Human platelet lysate allows expansion and clinical grade production of mesenchymal stromal cells from small samples of bone marrow aspirates or marrow filter washouts
We compared two protocols for the expansion of human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) starting from diagnostic samples of BM aspirates (2-5 ml) or using the remnants in the bag and filter at the end of the BM infusions. The protocols differed in the presence of either 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) or 5% platelet lysate (PL). We obtained a significantly (P=0.02) better expansion with PL, obtaining a median 1010-fold compared to 198-fold with a selected batch of FBS and in fewer days (29.8 in PL versus 41.4 in FBS). Overall, we recovered a variable number from 54.8 x 10(6) to 365 x 10(6) hMSCs in PL versus a variable number from 2.7 x 10(6) to 31 x 10(6) in FBS. No difference could be found in terms of gross morphology, differentiation potential, surface markers and immunological properties (inhibition of allogeneic PHA response and mixed lymphocyte reaction) of cells expanded with PL or FBS. The preparations were found within the range of acceptability for all the quality control criteria. Due to the clinical grade nature of the PL and the reproducibility of separate preparations, we propose this method to obtain hMSCs even from minute amounts of BM cells

Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV
The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region

Effect of chlorophyll hybrid nanopigments from broccoli waste on thermomechanical and colour behaviour of polyester-based bionanocomposites
Natural dyes obtained from agro-food waste can be considered promising substitutes of synthetic dyes to be used in several applications. With this aim, in the present work, we studied the use of chlorophyll dye (CD) extracted from broccoli waste to obtain hybrid nanopigments based on calcined hydrotalcite (HT) and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclays. The synthesized chlorophyll hybrid nanopigments (CDNPs), optimized by using statistical designed experiments, were melt-extruded with a polyester-based matrix (INZEA) at 7 wt% loading. Mechanical, thermal, structural, morphological and colour properties of the obtained bionanocomposites were evaluated. The obtained results evidenced that the maximum CD adsorption into HT was obtained when adding 5 wt% of surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate) without using any biomordant and coupling agent, while the optimal conditions for MMT were achieved without adding any of the studied modifiers. In both cases, an improvement in CD thermal stability was observed by its incorporation in the nanoclays, able to protect chlorophyll degradation. The addition of MMT to INZEA resulted in large ∆E* values compared to HT incorporation, showing bionanocomposite green/yellow tones as a consequence of the CDNPs addition. The results obtained by XRD and TEM revealed a partially intercalated/exfoliated structure for INZEA-based bionanocomposites, due to the presence of an inorganic filler in the formulation of the commercial product, which was also confirmed by TGA analysis. CDNPs showed a reinforcement effect due to the presence of the hybrid nanopigments and up to 26% improvement in Young’s modulus compared to neat INZEA. Finally, the incorporation of CDNPs induced a decrease in thermal stability as well as limited effect in the melting/crystallization behaviour of the INZEA matrix. The obtained results showed the potential use of green natural dyes from broccoli wastes, adsorbed into nanoclays, for the development of naturally coloured bionanocomposites
Among goats and bears: A taphonomic study of the faunal accumulation from Tritons Cave (Lleida, Spain)
Like human groups, carnivores are able to act on the same faunal accumulation and generate important bone assemblages with their prey remains. In addition, both predators can share the same habitable areas and alternate their occupations, producing the well-known palimpsest at archaeological sites. As a discipline, taphonomy helps us understand the formation of these sites and allows us to identify what occurred before and after the burial of the remains. In order to make an accurate taphonomic interpretation, knowledge of the carnivore ethology is necessary to understand the way that bone accumulations originate and to make inferences about their relationship with human behaviour or other living beings of the environment. In this work, a first taphonomic approach concerning the faunal assemblage of unit 2 of Tritons Cave (Lleida, Catalonia) has been carried out. This unit is characterized by the prevailing presence of the Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) and, to a lesser extent, the brown bear (Ursus arctos) and cave bear (Ursus spelaeus). The survival profile of goats, the alterations observed on the bones, and the consumption patterns seem to indicate that the main agent accumulator is the leopard (Panthera pardus); nevertheless, the occasional intrusion and secondary activity of other predators, including hominins, cannot be ruled out. The presence of ursids and the alterations on their bones seem to be related to natural deaths and subsequent carnivore activity, which indicates the high complexity in the assemblage formation. The identification of the leopard as a main taphonomic agent sheds light about these kinds of dens, establishing guidelines to differentiate bone accumulations produced by other carnivores as well as the criteria to identify them within anthropic contexts. Thus, the goal here is to highlight the importance of these types of studies to better understand the relationships and differences between human and carnivore activities in the Iberian Peninsula during the Late Pleistocene age
