LIFE AND DEATH FANTASY IN MATT HAIG\u27S THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY
Abstract
This study discusses the fantasy of life and death desire in Matt Haig\u27s The Midnight Library (2020). The aim of this research is: To find out what fantasy of life and death desire that represent id, ego, and superego of Matt Haig in The Midnight Library. This study uses a psychoanalysis approach, which is used to analyze the fantasy of life and death desire that can representative the id, ego, and superego of Matt Haig as an author regarding to life and death desire. The result of this study show the id is dominant among the ego and superego. prominently features id symbols, indicating a profound exploration of primal desires, instincts, and the unconscious mind, particularly evident in main character\u27s arc. These id symbols, serve to unveil author\u27s innermost wishes and untamed impulses, suspending societal norms and reality\u27s constraints. Through id- driven narratives, readers witness Nora\u27s pursuit of immediate gratification, navigating alternate lives driven solely by desires, devoid of moral judgment. Additionally, ego symbols reflect author\u27s attempts to negotiate reality, while superego symbols embody societal ideals and moral judgments that conflict with author\u27s id-driven desires.

Some people like to read novel texts of various genres. Readers will get entertainment, information, and even knowledge by reading novels. However, in order to obtain these things, a text must be said to be fully legible only with cohesion. This relationship implies a continuity between one sentence and another. This research focuses on grammatical cohesion which can be seen through the text conversations in the novel 'The Midnight Library' by Matt Haig. This study uses Holliday and Hasan's theory. It is very important for students to deepen their knowledge of cohesion material because cohesion is a tool so that a sentence can be said as a whole, especially with text that uses English. The researcher chose the novel The Midnight Library because this novel contains many sentences or texts that contain types of cohesion, besides that students can get many deep life messages about the meaning of life and how one values one's life no matter what circumstances one lives in.
The object of the study is: (1) to find out types of grammatical cohesion that consist of reference, substitution, conjunction, and ellipsis; (2) to find out the dominant type of grammatical cohesion in the conversation text of the novel The Midnight Library written by Matt Haig.
The design of the research was descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The main source of the data was the text of conversation that exists in the novel The Midnight Library written by Matt Haig. There were 75 chapters in the novel, but only 52 chapters have been analysed because 23 chapters did not have any conversation yet. The technique of analysis involved categorization, abstraction, coding of the text and the last result. To see the dominant kind of grammatical cohesion, the researcher used percentages and count them manually.
The result of the data analysis showed 4 types of grammatical cohesion in the novel ‘The Midnight Library’ used in the conversation text that consists Reference, Substitution, Conjunction, and ellipsis. In the text of the conversation found reference occurred in 3.588 items, Substitusi occurred in 56 items, conjunction occurred in 696 items, and Elipsis in 106 items. The percentage of that data is a reference; the highest percentage of grammatical cohesion. Reference exceeded 80,70%, Conjunction is 15,65 %, Ellipsis is 2,38 % and the lowest substitute is 1,25 %. Therefore by the highest number of references, the researcher concludes that references are used to refer to the character in the novel The Midnight Library

Latar Belakang: Bahasa adalah bagian dari kehidupan kita, kita hidup di lautan bahasa dan sebagian besar interaksi kita dilakukan dengan menggunakan bahasa. Bahasa adalah sebuah sistem simbolik di mana kata-kata dikaitkan dengan objek, ide, dan tindakan berdasarkan kesepakatan sehingga bunga mawar dengan nama lain akan berbau harum.
Tujuan: Untuk menganalisis simbol-simbol dalam novel The Midnight Library karya Matt Haig.
Metode: Data dalam penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif. Data kualitatif berupa kata-kata atau teks “bukan gambar atau angka-angka” (Aminuddin 1999:16) berdasarkan pernyataan tersebut data dalam penelitian ini adalah kutipan teks dari novel “The Midnight Library” karya Matt Haig. Dalam melakukan penelitian kualitatif ini, peneliti menggunakan teori Carl Jung tentang citra arketipal, seperti yang dijelaskan dalam buku karya Guerin (2005) sebagai konsep dasar dan kerangka berpikir. Keempat belas simbol tersebut adalah air, matahari, warna, lingkaran, ular, angka, perempuan arketipal, kekasih iblis, orang tua bijak, penipu, taman, pohon, padang pasir, dan gunung. Setelah membaca novel, peneliti memberikan catatan pada halaman dimana data ditemukan. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik studi dokumenter, dengan cara studi pustaka. Penelitian dilakukan dengan cara mengklasifikasikan bagian-bagian yang menjadi objek penelitian dalam rencana penelitian ini, terutama unsur-unsur semiotik yaitu simbol-simbol yang terdapat dalam novel The Midnight Library.
Hasil: Dalam novel The Midnight Library ditemukan 14 simbol berdasarkan hasil analisis data. Simbol lingkaran muncul sebanyak 75 kali dalam novel ini.
Simpulan: Dapat disimpulkan bahwa dalam novel “The Midnight Library” karya Matt Haig terdapat 14 simbol dan simbol yang sering digunakan adalah lingkaran. Saran: Disarankan untuk penelitian selanjutnya meneliti unsur intrinsik dan ekstrinsik, menggunakan teori lain dan bahkan aspek lainnya.

AN ANALYSIS OF SYMBOLS IN NOVEL THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY BY MATT HAIG
Language is a part of our life, we live in a sea of languages and most of our interactions are done using language. Language is a symbolic system in which words are associated with objects, ideas, and action.. The objective of the study is to analyze the symbols in The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The data in this study is qualitative. In conducting this research, a researcher used Carl Jung's theory of archetypal image, as described in a book by in a book by Guerin (2005).The fourteen symbols: water, sun, color, circle, serpent, number, the archetypal woman, the demon lover, the wise old man, the trickster, garden, tree, desert, and mountain. The resercher is done by classifying the semiotic elements, namely the symbols. In the novel The Midnight Library finds 14 symbols based on the result of the analysis data. The circle symbol appeared 75 times in this novel. It can be concluded that in the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig there are 14 symbols and the frequently used symbol is circle

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui citra perpustakaan dan citra pustakawan dalam novel The Midnight Library karya Matt Haig. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan content analysis lalu fokus dan kajian penelitian terdapat pada citra perpustakaan dan citra pustakawan. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara membaca dan mencatat bahan penelitian. Sumber data utama yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah novel The Midnight Library karya Matt Haig. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis isi (content analysis). Hasil dari penelitian terdapat citra baik dan citra buruk perpustakaan. Terdapat pula citra baik dan citra buruk pustakawan. Citra Baik Perpustakaan: Perpustakaan merupakan tempat yang hangat, suaka kecil peradaban, memiliki koleksi buku yang banyak, dan memiliki udara yang segar. Happiness is something that everyone wants to achieve. Even, it can be said that happiness is the purpose of human life. The theme of happiness can’t be separated from the scope of literature include novel. Study on novel is often become the subject of study because it describes about human life in the real world. However, the study often raises the negative side of human. While research with positive psychology that sees humans from the good point of view is still not widely done. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig was chosen to be studied because the entire plot in the novel tells about the main character's search for happiness. The novel describe a person named Nora who is filled with negativity and full of hopelessness but tries to start a new life and looking for the happiness she wants.
This research aims to examine the interpretation of happiness by the main character and examine the indicators represent the main character happiness in the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The research design used was library research design. In this study, the researcher applied documentation method for the method of data collection. The data in this research are units of lingual, words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in narrative form. In this research, the researcher used Content Analysis (CA) model. The content analysis consist of three activities, namely: data reduction, data display and drawing conclusions.
The research produced two subjects regarding the main character interpretation of happiness and the indicators that represent the main character's happiness in the novel The Midnight Library. Happiness according to the main character a condition in which a person fully accepts himself/herself (self-acceptance), understands the meaning of life, appreciates every moment in his/her life, and has strong and loving social relationships. Teknik Penerjemahan pada Versi Indonesia Novel "The Midnight Library" Karya Matt Haig
This study examines the translation techniques used in the Indonesian version of The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, translated as Perpustakaan Tengah Malam by Dharmawati. The research aims to identify the dominant translation techniques and explain the reason for the dominance using the framework proposed by Molina and Albir. A qualitative method was employed to analyze 140 phrases and sentences taken from Chapters One and Two of the novel. The findings reveal that 10 translation techniques were used: modulation (35.7%, 50 occurrences), literal translation (25.7%, 36 occurrences), linguistic amplification (9.2%, 13 occurrences), established equivalent (7.8%, 11 occurrences), borrowing (6.4%, 9 occurrences), transposition (6.4%, 9 occurrences), adaptation (3.5%, 5 occurrences), reduction (2.1%, 3 occurrences), discursive creation (1.4%, 2 occurrences), and linguistic compression (1.4%, 2 occurrences). Modulation emerged as the most dominant technique. Analysis of The Main Character’s Personality in “The Midnight Library” Novel By Matt Haig
This research has the purpose of finding out the personality of the protagonist in the novel entitled “The Midnight Library” written by Matt Haig. The researcher had used the theory of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud in order to analyse on Nora’s personality, the protagonist of the novel. Freud had introduced psychoanalysis on human psyche, which consisted of three aspects, they are the id, the ego, and the superego. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research, which the data collection is using the method of library research and data analysing is using descriptive analysis method, both theorized by Ratna (2004). It results on the findings of 4 data of id aspect, 3 data of ego aspect, and 5 data of superego. It can be concluded from the analysis result that the main character of the novel, Nora Seed, was controlled the most by her superego, where she built her superego personality through her experiences and journeys in finding the right life for herself.
