Interethnic perception of ethnic boundaries in Penang, Malaysia
This case study was conducted to address questions of ethnic boundaries and the dynamics of urban communities in Penang, Malaysia. An ethnic boundary study is based on a systematic set of rules that governs a person's behavior and actions in interethnic relations: it generates and maintains ethnic groups (Barth, 1969:10). It also emphasizes the processes and situational conditions in order to identify boundaries in social interaction. The members of a given society are divided on grounds of race, religion, language, culture, ethnicity, history, ecology and social organization, separately or together (Furnivall, 1956). Culture includes and subsumes language, religion, conceptions of race, ethnicity, kinship, ecology, community and normative models of social organization and conduct (Smith, 1991). The research questions are formulated: How do people with ideological preconceptions interact within and among different ethnic groups? How do the people in Penang perceive and exhibit their ethnic identity based on beliefs, house-forms, and social associations? How do contemporary ethnic groups in Penang perceive the social life in terms of interethnic relations? How do the people of Penang retain their ethnic identity in response to the new formation of such communities? How do the people of outside official ethnic categories perceive their identities? An anthropological ethno-history (Sturtevant, 1966:14) was conducted to highlight and understand the earlier situations experienced by the first and second generations of Penangites. The use of collective and self-identity of Penagites in contemporary context is also examined. This research finds that the urban enclaves, the names of streets, religious buildings and cultural events reflect a poly-ethnic of Penangites. Then, the hybrid culture and cross cut the conceived ethnic boundaries occur when the awareness of social class and attachment to global culture are mingled. The upper class of different ethnic groups could live in a modern neighborhood. Moreover, identities of the Penang Baba, Penang Jawi Pekan, Jawi Arab and Penang Eurasians are not static, but more dynamic because of education, professions, and globalism. The next generation of Peranakan groups does not strictly follow the identities of previous one. However, those Peranakan fall outside the official categories of the 2010 census, and are categorized as Chinese, ndia or simply " ther". Since the official categories of the 2010 census do not acknowledge the realities of ethnic identities, the civil rights in terms of politics, economic, and education opportunities as Malaysians might be ignored.M.A

Ethnoregional social dramas of Southeast Asian in globalism: recasting cultural heritage for ethnic revivals
This book offers an interpretative symbolic analysis of present global phenomenon that gives rise ethnic culture as regional identity. With a multi-sited ethnography (Marcus, 1995 and 1998), this book is a sort of comparative ethnographies which sought the collective identities of the Melayu Baru or Neo-Malay and Chinese Peranakan or Nanyang in two cities of Southeast Asia. The Neo-Malay with Islam solidarity (Ummah) is attached to ethnoregional community, in contrast, the Chinese Nanyang or Peranakan got their identity remaking with syncretic popular beliefs in the Straits of Melaka. Ethnicity data of Neo-Malay and Chinese Nanyang of Georgetown of Malaysia and Medan City of Indonesia are divided into four Social Drama phases (Turner, 1982), they are: Breach, Liminal, Redress, and Reintegration. Ethnography of ethnic formations and revivals comprises of: (1) Colonialism as Breach: Ethnic Categories of the Dutch Indies and British Malay (2) Nationalism as Liminal: Ethno-national symbolic disputes (3) Ethnoregionalism as Redress: regionalizing the cultural hybridity of Neo-Malay and of Chinese Nanyang, and (4) Globalism as Reintegration: galvanizing heritage fiestas for global culture. The reproduced hybrid heritage of Neo-Malay and Chinese Nanyang is annually performed in public spaces and social media by the ethnic groups in Georgetown-Malaysia and Medan North Sumatra. Restoration of ethnic rituals and festivals arises to uphold ethnic identities of social groups. Even the solitary rituals, which move into the public spaces, solidify the ethnic identity and create “communitas” in urban areas. Beliefs and traditions are the foundation of shared identities that must have any adjustments to external factors. The observed and analyzed ethnic revivals in Georgetown and Medan city are using various reconstruction strategies; recasting of cultural heritage reproductions in the religious sites and public spaces of urban areas, re-enacting annual rituals and festivals. The ethnoregional shared identities are recast as ethnic revival strategy in globalism

Independent Reading as Critical Practice: Bridging Autonomy with Literary Theory and Criticism: -
This study aimed to implement independent reading as a form of critical practice through the lens of literary theory and criticism among 30 eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Langsa. The research sought to introduce independent reading not merely as a leisure activity but as a reflective and critical engagement with texts. Employing a qualitative case study design grounded in reader-response theory, the study examined a group of students, a reading program, and a classroom context where independent reading was practiced as critical literacy. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, including students’ reading responses and assessment results. The findings indicate a measurable improvement in students’ reading performance, with pretest scores ranging from 45–80 (M = 61) and posttest scores ranging from 50–85 (M = 69). More importantly, the integration of literary theory within independent reading encouraged students to engage with texts from multiple perspectives, consider cultural contexts, and develop empathetic and interpretive awareness. These outcomes suggest that independent reading, when supported by literary theory and guided reflection, can function as an effective pedagogical strategy for fostering critical literacy in EFL classrooms. The study contributes theoretically by positioning independent reading as a critical-literary practice and pedagogically by demonstrating its potential to enhance students’ interpretive competence and engagement with literary texts
Women’s Voices in Cyberspace: A Feminist Reading of Digital Narratives on Wattpad
In the digital era, online platforms have transformed the way literature is produced and consumed, providing new spaces for marginalized voices to emerge. This study explores how women articulate their voices, identities, and lived experiences through digital literary works on Wattpad. Anchored in the framework of feminist literary criticism, the research analyzes the representation of female characters, dominant narrative themes, and stylistic patterns employed by women authors. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, several popular Wattpad stories written by female writers were examined to uncover how digital narratives reflect feminist consciousness. The findings reveal that Wattpad functions not only as a site of popular entertainment but also as a medium of emancipation and symbolic resistance against patriarchal structures. Female protagonists are often portrayed as independent, self-aware, and empowered figures who challenge traditional gender norms. Aesthetically, the narratives exhibit the characteristics of ecriture féminine, a writing style that emphasizes emotional depth, intuition, and embodiment. The study concludes that women’s digital literature on Wattpad represents a dynamic form of contemporary feminist expression, where new media act as platforms for self-articulation, solidarity, and gender awareness. This demonstrates that digital culture plays a vital role in reshaping the boundaries of literary production and in amplifying women’s voices in the modern literary landscape
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
