Workplace Design, Complementarities among Work Practices, and the Formation of Key Competencies: Evidence from Italian Employees
The author analyzes the extent to which High Performance Workplace Practices (HPWP) act as a mediating variable between High Performance Work Organization (HPWO) and the economic outcomes of firms in developing workers’ key competencies, which include higher order cognition, problem-solving, and self-reflexivity. Using a large survey of Italian employees drawn from a government-constructed database, the author finds that HPWPs that comprise greater worker discretion, participation in improvement groups, inclusion in workplace improvement schemes, and involvement in performance evaluation help employees develop such competencies, thus enabling firms to thrive and grow. He also shows that these organizational work practices result in more efficient production when simultaneously adopted as a bundle, which confirms the importance of complementarities or synergies among such practices
Remembering (with) the Body. Form and Experience in Post-war Memorial Architecture Dedicated to Political and Racial Deportation
The text explores the evolution of memorial architecture post-World War II, focusing on its role in commemorating victims of political and racial deportation. It argues that architecture must transcend traditional formalism, becoming a reflection of collective experiences and processes shaped by historical traumas. Central to this discussion is the notion of "bare life," as defined by Giorgio Agamben, highlighting the loss of individuality and humanity in concentration camps, where victims were stripped of identity and agency.
Memorial architecture faces unique challenges, as it must confront the unspeakability of the victims' experiences while also serving as a moral obligation to remember those silenced. The author emphasizes the need for architecture to facilitate a personal, embodied engagement with memory, transforming the act of visiting into an active reflection on the past. This shift from static monuments to dynamic memorials allows visitors to connect physically and emotionally with the history, bridging the gap between the past and present.
Ultimately, the text advocates for an architecture that honours anonymity and collective suffering, seeking to reconstruct a sense of place and identity for victims through thoughtful design that encourages personal interpretation and reflection
The quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop in N= 4 Chern-Simons-matter theories
In three dimensional N= 4 Chern-Simons-matter theories two independent fermionic Wilson loop operators can be defined, which preserve half of the supersymmetry charges and are cohomologically equivalent at classical level. We compute their three-loop expectation value in a convenient color sector and prove that the degeneracy is uplifted by quantum corrections. We expand the matrix model prediction in the same regime and by comparison we conclude that the quantum 1/2 BPS Wilson loop is the average of the two operators. We provide an all-loop argument to support this claim at any order. As a by-product, we identify the localization result at three loops as a correction to the framing factor induced by matter interactions. Finally, we comment on the quantum properties of the non-1/2 BPS Wilson loop operator defined as the difference of the two fermionic ones.Fil: Bianchi, Marco S.. Saussure, la syllabe et le phonème
This paper analyses de Saussure's observations concerning phonology. By drawing on the CLG as well as on its sources and other writings, it is argued that Saussure’s emphasis was on the relationship between phonetic elements in the speech chain, rather than on the phonic substance of the minimal segment per se. In this connection, alternation between opening and closing processes proved of basic importance not only for the concept of syllable, but from the perspective of general linguistics as well. The author further suggests that it is incorrect to consider Saussure as a precursor (even implicitly) of the contemporary concept of phoneme (as Jakobson first of all did).Cet article analyse les réflexions de Saussure sur la phonologie.
[English]: This book is a selection of Federico Albano Leoni’s publications, representing the multifaceted nature of his research activity in different fields, which nonetheless share a great interest in signification and in linguistic production, as concrete manifestation of parole. In each of these areas, Albano Leoni’s research has left a mark that contributed to further developments: Germanic philology, historical linguistics, linguistique d'intervention, phonetics and phonology, corpus linguistics, philosophy of language. Each of these research areas represents a section of this volume, with an introduction by one of his former students or scholars who shared his scientific interests (Simona Leonardi, Luisa Corona, Anna Rosa Guerriero, Mariapaola D'Imperio, Loredana Cerrato, Mauro Serra). An exhaustive bibliography of Federico Albano Leoni’s many publications concludes the volume: the publications are arranged chronologically within each subject area (a link indicates works that are freely accessible online).
The book is opened, as a general Introduction, by an interview with Albano Leoni, including academic memories and considerations on the future prospects of each of the themes covered by the volume. Contributing to the interview are also the three editors of the book (Elda Morlicchio, Valeria Micillo, Francesca M. Dovetto), the earliest pupils of Federico Albano Leoni, in German linguistics, Germanic philology and Historical and general Linguistics respectively, and Annibale Elia, Linguist at the University of Salerno, colleague of Albano Leoni and artist, author of the cover image
COVID-led consumption displacement: A longitudinal analysis of hotel booking patterns()
This research contributes to the literature on consumption displacement by exploring the pandemic-led shifts in hotel booking patterns. We perform a longitudinal analysis and a critical comparison of bookings before and after COVID-19 outbreak, focusing on the booking window, length of stay, and booking channel. Data include weekly bookings of a representative sample of Balearic Islands’ hotels between 2018 and 2021. Results indicate that the pandemic has led to a drop in the volume of bookings and a remarkable change in booking patterns. Specifically, we find a temporal shift in booking behavior, characterized by a lower anticipation and a change in the tourism supply chain, namely a decrease in the share of intermediated bookings. The expected increase in the frequency of exogenous shocks, such as weather-related and sanitary crises, could affect purchasing behaviors, thus enhancing the relevance of this study, with managerial implications for industry and destination managers
Probing Wilson loops in N=4 Chern–Simons-matter theories at weak coupling
AbstractFor three-dimensional N=4 super-Chern–Simons-matter theories associated to necklace quivers U(N0)×U(N1)×⋯U(N2r−1), we study at quantum level the two kinds of 1/2 BPS Wilson loop operators recently introduced in arXiv:1506.07614. We perform a two-loop evaluation and find the same result for the two kinds of operators, so moving to higher loops a possible quantum uplift of the classical degeneracy. We also compute the 1/4 BPS bosonic Wilson loop and discuss the quantum version of the cohomological equivalence between fermionic and bosonic Wilson loops. We compare the perturbative result with the Matrix Model prediction and find perfect matching, after identification and remotion of a suitable framing factor. Finally, we discuss the potential appearance of three-loop contributions that might break the classical degeneracy and briefly analyze possible implications on the BPS nature of these operators
The author restores to Ottavio Leoni a portrait kept in Palazzo Montecitorio, on deposit since 1925 from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, formerly assigned to a 17th-century Dutch school. Moreover, the sitter is identified for the first time with Paolo Giordano II Orsini, Duke of Bracciano, one of the most famous Roman patrons of the Baroque period. This important acquisition for the State’s historical and artistic heritage shed new light on a canvas whose history, even the most remote, has been reconstructed thanks to detailed documentary research, identifying its passage from the ancient baronial Orsini family to Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Braschi, later Pope Pius VI, until its acquisition in Rome by Cavalier Domenico Venuti for the Bourbon collections under the pompous and disguised name of Van Dyck. The addition of the portrait to Ottavio Leoni’s catalogue has also made it possible to rethink the sequence of the known effigies of the Duke of Bracciano, proposing to assign to Ippolito Leoni the drawing in Lille, Palais des Beaux-Arts, and the painting in Ajaccio, Musée Fesch, already assigned to the hand of his father, Ottavio
