Clinical characteristics and outcomes of diabetic patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and endocarditis
The complications from S. aureus bacteremia (SAB) and infective endocarditis (SAIE) are higher in patients with diabetes. We summarize the characteristics and outcome of diabetic patients enrolled in a multicenter trial of daptomycin vs. standard therapy for SAB and SAIE. Adult patients with SAB were randomized to daptomycin 6 mg-kg-day or standard therapy (vancomycin 1 g every 12 h or antistaphylococcal penicillin 2 g every 4 h, both with gentamicin 1 mg-kg every 8 h for 4 days). Clinical success was defined as survival, resolution of S. aureus infection, and clinical outcome of cure or improved 6 weeks after end of therapy. Diabetic patients (86-235) were older, more overweight, and were more likely to present with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and to have complicated SAB. Clinical success rates were similar (67.4percent in diabetics and 70.5percent in non-diabetics). The mortality rate was significantly higher among diabetic patients (22.1percent vs. 11.4percent, p∈=∈0.038). In the diabetes subgroup, the clinical success and mortality rates were comparable between the daptomycin and the standard therapy arms. The presence of diabetes is associated with significantly higher mortality in patients with SAB and SAIE. Flowcytometric assessment of fetomaternal hemorrhage during external cephalic version at term
External cephalic version (ECV) at term is a safe procedure and reduces the incidence of cesarean sections for breech presentation. One of the known complications, however, is an ECV-related disruption of the placental barrier and a subsequent transfusion of fetal blood into maternal circulation. While the incidence of ECV-related fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) has been determined recently in a large trial using a manual Kleihauer-Betke test (KBT), questions remain on the amount of ECV-related FMH. KBT, which detects fetal red blood cells (RBC) on the basis of acidic resistance of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), is known to be a sensitive test, yet prone to procedural errors limiting its accuracy in quantifying FMH. In this study we investigated 50 patients for FMH before and after ECV, using a dual-color flow cytometric test kit with a lower limit of quantification of 0.05% fetal RBC in maternal peripheral blood. Three patients had a quantifiable increase of fetal RBC detected after ECV (0.06%; 0.08%; 0.1%). None of these subtle increments was predictable by ECV-related clinical parameters or translated into fetal compromise. Using a sensitive and accurate flow cytometric test method, our data provide further assurance to mothers on the safety of ECV at term

BRACING AND NON-SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF SCOLIOSIS IN CANADA: EARLY DETECTION, ACCESS INEQUITIES, AND THE NEED FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY REFORM
Bracing remains the cornerstone of non-surgical management for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with an aim to minimize the risk of progression and to avoid spine surgery. In Canada however, one third to half of patients present with curve magnitudes too severe for optimal brace treatment, resulting in higher than necessary surgical volumes. High-cost spine surgeries are fully funded while non-surgical management is not. This Professional Opinion article highlights systemic barriers to early detection that limit opportunity for non-surgical management in Canada and ultimately drive up healthcare spending. In Canada, there is an urgent need for a coordinated national strategy to re-establish routine scoliosis screening, ensure equitable public funding for treatment and expand professional training in non-surgical spinal care.

Hundreds of variants clustered in genomic loci and biological pathways affect human height
Most common human traits and diseases have a polygenic pattern of inheritance: DNA sequence variants at many genetic loci influence the phenotype. Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified more than 600 variants associated with human traits(1), but these typically explain small fractions of phenotypic variation, raising questions about the use of further studies. Here, using 183,727 individuals, we show that hundreds of genetic variants, in at least 180 loci, influence adult height, a highly heritable and classic polygenic trait(2,3). The large number of loci reveals patterns with important implications for genetic studies of common human diseases and traits. First, the 180 loci are not random, but instead are enriched for genes that are connected in biological pathways (P = 0.016) and that underlie skeletal growth defects (P<0.001). Second, the likely causal gene is often located near the most strongly associated variant: in 13 of 21 loci containing a known skeletal growth gene, that gene was closest to the associated variant. Third, at least 19 loci have multiple independently associated variants, suggesting that allelic heterogeneity is a frequent feature of polygenic traits, that comprehensive explorations of already-discovered loci should discover additional variants and that an appreciable fraction of associated loci may have been identified. Fourth, associated variants are enriched for likely functional effects on genes, being over-represented among variants that alter amino-acid structure of proteins and expression levels of nearby genes. Our data explain approximately 10% of the phenotypic variation in height, and we estimate that unidentified common variants of similar effect sizes would increase this figure to approximately 16% of phenotypic variation (approximately 20% of heritable variation). Although additional approaches are needed to dissect the genetic architecture of polygenic human traits fully, our findings indicate that GWA studies can identify large numbers of loci that implicate biologically relevant genes and pathways

In these studies literature potentials are used for all but the X-state of He. In that case, we calculated the potential at the CCSD(T)level of theory using the SDD+G(3df) basis for Br, the aug- cc-pVQZ basis for He and a set of bond functions, optimized for rare-gas molecule centered at the midpoint between He and the center of mass. The potential was fit it to an expansion in Legendre polynomials and radial functions that had the proper short- and long-range behaviors. Using these potentials, the energies and wave functions of the bound states of the complexes are generated for and from these the vibronic spectra are computed over a range of temperatures from 0.1 to 2.5 K. Excellent agreement with the reported spectra is obtained. Based on these results we compare the temperature dependencies of the experimental and calculated spectra to obtain insights into the relative binding energies of the linear and T stereo isomers of both of these complexes
Engaging Young Adult College Students in Preventive Health Literacy Through Gamification
This study investigates the efficacy of gamified educational interventions on health literacy among young adults aged 18 to 24, specifically targeting traditional undergraduate college students at a Midwestern private university. The researchers aimed to establish whether virtual escape room-style education modules, focusing on preventive health maintenance, nutrition, and mental health, could achieve a 20% increase in health literacy scores. Results demonstrate a substantial improvement, exceeding the target goal with an overall increase of 27.8% in post-test scores. Notably, general healthcare literacy experienced the most substantial improvement, followed by nutrition literacy and mental health literacy. Despite the smallest mean change occurring in mental health literacy, this area had the highest pre-test scores, possibly indicating a ceiling effect where baseline awareness limits room for improvement. These findings align with prior research by Kurki et al. (2021), which observed minimal change in mental health knowledge scores due to a similar ceiling effect. The study emphasizes the effectiveness of gamified educational approaches in improving health literacy among young adults, particularly in domains such as general healthcare and nutrition. Further exploration could delve into refining interventions to address nuanced challenges in improving mental health literacy despite high baseline awareness levels
Mythocritique des Contes de Jacques Ferron
The work of Jacques Ferron could well be defined by a paradox: to go forward one has to revisit one's past. Indeed, in his texts, Ferron, significantly, returns to his roots---literary and political---to understand, explain, and criticize his nation which at the time was preparing for the Quiet Revolution. Assuredly, Contes du pays incerain (1962) and Contes anglais (1964) are the two works in which are found the greatest number of references to great texts of the Western literary tradition. Ferron transposes classical and traditional Culture into his own and adapts many myths, biblical texts, and folk tales. Moreover, these two collections of tales, united in 1968 under the title Contes, but still independent of each other, allow one to understand, by their titles alone, that the author describes through them his vision of the nation, a bipolar Quebec where uncertainty is opposed to Englishness. From there it is only a short step to linking the present to the past: defining uncertainty and Englishness---signs of the collections' identity, signs, ultimately, of Ferron's vision of the nation---by looking into the processes of reactualization of Ferron's literary roots. Using an approach based on John J. White's method, this thesis proposes a mythocritical reading of Ferron's Contes. This approach allows one to retrace the path the author followed to understand his society. To understand Ferron's vision of the nation developed throughout his texts, one has to go back to the author's literary sources; to know to what extent uncertainty and Englishness are opposed, one has to analyse how each collection of tales transforms and gives new meaning to the myths and legends that are the foundation of the Western culture
Depicting Scent: Incense Burners in the French Engravings of the 18th Century
This article is devoted to the comparative study of images of the incense burner, i.e. a device for filling the interior with a pleasing scent. The author refers to materials from French design and book engravings of the eighteenth century. The article contains descriptions and results of a comparative analysis of engraved images of incense burners in the works of French decorators and illustrators of the eighteenth century. A comparative study of incense burners as a sketch of an interior item and as the entourage of a book illustration makes it possible to trace the changes in their typology, style, and semantics over the eighteenth century. The article refers to engraved sketches of incense burners in the projects of French architects and ornamentalists of the eighteenth century, such as J. Bйren, B. Turreau, J.-M. Oppenord, J.-F. Blondel, J.-Ch. Delafosse, J.-F. de Nefforge, J.-F. Boucher, R. De La Londe, and J.-F. Forty. Secondly, it draws upon book engravings depicting incense burners created by such artists as C. Gillot, L.-F. Dubourg, H.-F. Gravelot, F. Boucher, Ch. Eisen, J.-J.-F. Le Barbier, K.-P. Marillier, J.-M. Moreau le Jeune, J. de Sиve, and A. Borel. As a result of the description and analysis of images, the author determines the genres and features of the iconography of the incense burner. A comparative analysis of design and book engravings helps address the problem of the genesis of the image of the incense burner in illustrations. The author substantiates the direct influence of design engravings on the images of incense burners in book illustrations and at the same time, the absence of a “literal” influence of literary texts, pointing out the stable continuity of images of the incense burner in similar works of illustrators for different editions of the same literary text. In a comparative aspect, the article analyses the semantics of images of the incense burner in the design and book engravings, noting the predominance of the sensual-hedonistic connotation of the images of the incense burner over the eighteenth century

In spite of its astrophysical interest (acetic acid was detected recently in the Sgr B2 interstellar using millimeter arrays), the millimeter and microwave spectra of this molecule is far from beeing understood, especially in the torsional excited states. No really satisfactory agreement between observed and calculated frequencies was obtained up to now. Using data from the and some new measurements performed with the Lille millimeter wave spectrometer, we began to apply the same RAM (Rho Axis Method) theoretical approach that we used successfuly for a similar (from the internal rotation point of view) molecule, acetaldehyde .
