Chain length dependent termination in butyl acrylate free-radical polymerization studied via stationary and pulsed laser initiated RAFT polymerization
The chain-length dependence of the termination rate coefficient, k t, in butyl acrylate free-radical polymerization has been determined by two independent methods, RAFT-SP-PLP and RAFT-CLD-T, both employing control of radical chain length by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Within RAFT-SP-PLP, the polymerization induced by a laser single pulse is monitored via near-IR spectroscopy with a time resolution of microseconds. In RAFT-CLD-T, isothermal reaction rate measurements are carried out via DSC under stationary polymerization conditions. The resulting k t data refer to the situation of living/controlled radical polymerization, where both radical chain length and monomer conversion increase during the course of the reaction. The RAFT-SP-PLP measurements were carried out at 60°C and two pressures, 5 and 1000 bar. The RAFT-CLD-T experiments were run at ambient pressure and at two temperatures, 60 and 80°C, respectively. In absolute value, the termination rate coefficients for identical pressure and temperature deduced from the two methods differ by less than a factor of 2. For the dependence of kt on chain length, i, almost identical information is provided by the two techniques. The chain-length dependence of kt may be described by the power-law expression kt(i) = k t(1,1)i-α with, however, α being different for short-chain and long-chain radicals. RAFT-SP-PLP yields α1 = 1.25 for the short-chain regime from 1 < i < 30, and α2 = 0.22 for chain lengths above i = 50. RAFT-CLD-T results in α1 = 1.04 and α2 = 0.20 in identical chain length regimes. k t(1,1) values are found to be close to 1 × 109 L mol-1 s-1. © 2005 American Chemical Society
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.
IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells

Does the amplitude of biceps brachii M waves increase similarly in both limbs during staircase, electrically elicited contractions?
Objective: Humans usually tend to control more finely muscle force production in dominant than non-dominant upper limbs. It is well established that motor unit recruitment is a key mechanism by which muscle force is controlled, and we hypothesized that a relatively smaller number of motor units may be recruited in muscles of dominant than non-dominant limbs for any given increase in synaptic input. Hence, we investigated peripheral properties of dominant and non-dominant biceps brachii through the analysis of M-wave responses to incremental electrical stimulation. Approach: Current pulses at progressively greater intensities were applied in the proximal region of biceps brachii of 16 subjects while surface electromyograms were recorded with a grid of electrodes in the distal region. M-wave amplitude was averaged across channels and normalized with respect to the maximum amplitude value, separately for each stimulation intensity and limb. Amplitude-current intensity curves were interpolated to provide an equal number of stimulation levels between limbs. Differences between dominant and non-dominant arms were assessed through the average increase in M-wave amplitude for consecutive stimulation intensities (increments). Main results: Wilcoxon's signed-rank test showed that increments in the M-wave amplitude were significantly smaller (p = 0.017) in dominant than non-dominant biceps brachii. Significance: The results suggest that there was a more gradual recruitment of motor units in biceps brachii of dominant than non-dominant arms. This is in agreement with the hypothesis of a broader spectrum of motor unit recruitment thresholds in the dominant arm, which may contribute to a finer regulation of force production
Measurement of the top-quark mass in all-jets events in pp collisions at = 7 TeV
The mass of the top quark is measured using a sample of candidate events with at least six jets in the final state. The sample is selected from data collected with the CMS detector in pp collisions at = 7 TeV in 2011 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.54 . The mass is reconstructed for each event employing a kinematic fit of the jets to a hypothesis. The top-quark mass is measured to be 173.49 0.69(stat.) 1.21(syst.) GeV. A combination with previously published measurements in other decay modes by CMS yields a mass of 173.54 0.33(stat.) 0.96(syst.) GeV
