Do pensamento á ficção no exílio de Francisco Ayala

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura.Do pensamento à ficção quer expressar um trânsito na obra de Francisco Ayala, que começa com o exílio na América em 1939 e se estende ao exercício intelectual do escritor espanhol nesse período. Representante de um pensamento liberal que se fundamenta no conhecimento racional e historicista, desenvolvido no campo da sociologia e da política, ele atua no meio argentino e latino-americano em geral através de artigos publicados em revistas e jornais, livros teóricos e traduções. Seu trabalho busca refletir sobre os acontecimentos históricos da primeira metade do século XX e do pós-guerra no contexto mundial de crise da modernidade, com o objetivo de compreender as mudanças sociais e situar o papel da elite letrada frente às urgências da sociedade de massas, observando como o estado das letras se viu sitiado pelo avanço das imagens dos meios de comunicação. O exílio coloca Ayala frente a uma realidade emergente e descentrada nos países por onde andou. Isso alimenta um desvio gradual da atividade sociológica para uma dedicação literária predominante. Ao final do exílio, na década de 70, e das viagens que esse período proporcionou, ele acaba por incorporar as imagens às letras e, mesmo mantendo a consciência do seu eu, experimenta as possibilidades de ser outros através da narrativa ficcional. Esse processo caracteriza um avanço sobre os limites do pensamento modernista, envolvendo Francisco Ayala numa situação tardo-moderna por experimentar, nas décadas de 50 e 60, elementos hoje atribuídos ao pós-modernismo. From thought to fiction it wishes to express a transit in the work of Francisco Ayala, which starts with the exile in America in 1939 and continues towards the intellectual exercise of the Spanish author in this period. Representative of a liberal thought which bases itself in the rational and historicist knowledge, developed in the field of Sociology and of the politics, he acts in the Argentinian and Latin-american as a general rule environment through articles published in magazines and newspapers, theoretical books and translations. His works aims to reflect upon the historical events of the first half of the XXth century and of the pos-war period in the world context of the crisis of modernity, with the objective of understanding the social changes and to situate the role of the educated elite as far as the urgencies of the mass society are concerned, noticing how the state of the education has found itself besieged due to the advances of the images of the communication media. The exile puts Ayala facing an emergent reality and decentred from the countries where he had traveled to. This provokes a gradual deviation from the sociological activity to a predominant literary dedication. At the end of the exile, during the 70#s, and of the trips, which this period had offered him, he finally incorporates the images into the texts and, even keeping the awareness of his self, the author experiences the possibilities of being others through the fictional narrative. This process characterizes an advance over the limits of the modernist thought, engaging Francisco Ayala into a late-modern situation for experimenting, during the 50#s and the 60#s, elements credited to the post-modernism

In Architecture and Development Ayala Levin charts the settler colonial imagination and practices that undergirded Israeli architectural development aid in Africa. Focusing on the “golden age” of Israel’s diplomatic relations in and throughout the continent from 1958 to 1973, Levin finds that Israel positioned itself as a developing-nation alternative in the competition over aid and influence between global North and global South. In analyses of the design and construction of prestigious governmental projects in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia, Levin details how architects, planners, and a trade union—owned construction company staged Israel as a new center of nonaligned expertise. These actors and professionals paradoxically capitalized on their settler colonial experience in Palestine, refashioning it as an alternative to Western colonial expertise. Levin traces how Israel became involved in the modernization of governance, education, and agriculture in Africa, as well as how African leaders chose to work with Israel to forge new South-South connections. In so doing, she offers new ways of understanding the role of architecture as a vehicle of postcolonial development and in the mobilization of development resources.</p
El perspectivismo lírico de Ramón Pérez de Ayala
The paper aims at describing Pérez de Ayala’s contribution to the New Spanish Narrative at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. In line with the great European novelists of the moment, the Asturian author created a type of lyrical novel in which the interiorized glance fragments itself in multiple perspectives that aspire to offer a complex and rich vision of the imagined reality. This fusion of lyricism and perspectivism, that I denominate «lyrical perspectivism» here, constitutes one of the great contributions of Perez de Ayala to the narrative language of its time.El trabajo analiza la contribución de Ramón Pérez de Ayala a la renovación narrativa en la España del primer tercio del siglo XX. En sintonía con los grandes novelistas europeos del momento, el autor asturiano ensayó un tipo de novela lírica en la que la mirada interiorizada se fragmenta en multitud de perspectivas que aspiran a ofrecer una visión más compleja y rica de la realidad imaginada. La fusión de lirismo y perspectivismo, que aquí se denomina «perspectivismo lírico», constituye una de las grandes aportaciones de Pérez de Ayala al lenguaje narrativo de su época
El mundo a la espalda. La vanguardia y el compromiso en el pensamiento sociológico-literario de Francisco Ayala
It has not highlighted yet the place of the avant-garde notions and the commitment in the autobiographical writings and literary-critical works of Francisco Ayala, where often the sociologist who was in it warns. The first stage of this author escapes the formula that usually sums up the path of the «young literature»: from the avant-garde to commitment. However, as this paper tries to show, his support to avant-gardist spirit means at the same time that he assumed a commitment with the elites that promoted the modernization and europeanization of Spain. This commitment carried with it an aesthetic program based on the autonomy of art, a budget-length Ayala urging him to separate politics and literature, and to express their differences, paradoxically, with the sartrean notion of engagement.No se ha resaltado aún el lugar que ocupan las nociones de vanguardia y compromiso en los escritos autobiográficos y los trabajos crítico-literarios de Francisco Ayala, donde a menudo se advierte el sociólogo que hubo en él. La primera etapa de este autor escapa a la fórmula con la que usualmente se resume la trayectoria de la llamada «joven literatura»: de la vanguardia al compromiso. No obstante, como trata de mostrar este artículo, su adhesión al espíritu vanguardista supuso al mismo tiempo contraer un compromiso con las minorías selectas que impulsaban la modernización y la europeización de España. Este compromiso llevaba aparejado un programa estético basado en la autonomía del arte, un presupuesto de larga duración en Ayala que lo insta a separar política y literatura, así como a manifestar sus discrepancias, paradójicamente, con el concepto sartreano de engagement

El Berlín de Ayala
¿Qué significaba Berlín -"extraña ciudad"- para un joven español al final de la República de Weimar, durante los años locos de los roaring twenties, cuando Ayala se fue a estudiar derecho? ¿Cómo vivió en aquel entonces la experiencia de una cultura tan diferente de la suya? Provisto de cartas de recomendación, Ayala fue aceptado en el ámbito universitario berlinés. Allí fue donde conoció a Etelvina Silva Vargas, su primera mujer, trabó amistad con el romanista alemán Walter Pabst y vió y vivió el acoso del nazismo. Después de la Guerra, volvió un par de veces a Alemania, pero una sola vez a Berlín. Todo esto se nos cuenta en algunos episodios de sus Recuerdos y olvidos ("Mi Berlín", "La universidad alemana", "Me asomo a la Alemania nazi"). Además, el Berlín de los años veinte se presenta como el telón de fondo y el lugar exótico de dos curiosos cuentos suyos ("Erika ante el invierno" y "San Silvestre"). El artículo pone de manifiesto las huellas que la experiencia berlinesa dejó en la vida y la obra del autor granadino llegando a la conclusión que la estancia en Berlín fue para Ayala mucho más que un episodio efímero.What did Berlin -"strange city"- mean to a young Spaniard at the end of the Weimar years, during the roaring twenties, when Ayala went there to study Law? How did he experience a culture that differed so much from his own at that time? Provided with letters of recommendation, he was accepted in Berlin academic circles where he met Etelvina Silva Vargas, his first wife, became friends with the German scholar Walter Pabst, and finally witnessed the rise of Nazism. Once the war was finished, he returned a number of times to Germany, but to Berlin he just returned once. The author acquaints the reader with this and other episodes in some of the chapters of his Recuerdos y olvidos ("Mi Berlín", "La universidad alemana ", "Me asomo a la Alemania nazi"). Moreover, the Berlin of the 1920s is the exotic setting of two of very remarkable stories by Ayala ("Erika ante el invierno" and "San Silvestre "). This article shows how Ayala's stay in Berlin meant much more than just a fleeting episode, but rather left important traces in both the life and the work of the Granadian author
