The Mistress of Dogs and warrior initiation at archaic Trebenishte

    No full text
The paper analyses and interprets the symbolic meaning of an iconographic composition consisting of a central Gorgon flanked by two canines, present on a bronze tripod from the archaic necropolis of Trebenishte, near Ohrid (6th–5th centuries BC). After introducing and describing the subject of interest, the author goes on to analyse the Gorgon in the symbolic role of ‘Mistress of Dogs’, comparing it to similar representations from geographical and chronological aspects. This is followed by an overview of the symbolic role of canines in the prehistoric and ancient Balkans as part of a wider Indo-European cultural milieu. The observed findings are then analysed in relation to the archaeological context of the tripod itself, which was deposited, along with a complementary krater, in the ‘princely grave’ of a high-ranking male individual with a warrior identity belonging to the archaic community buried at Trebenishte. The final conclusions of the author are that the iconography of the tripod reflects symbolic notions of liminality and transformation, whereby the object was probably intended to be used in initiation rituals that derive from the Indo-European traditions of the ‘Männerbünde’

Highlighting the similarities between the convex mirror used by Pierre Granche in his series of photographs and Parmigianino's Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror (1524), the mirror that Brunelleschi used in his experiments with portraying architecture as accurately as possible (Tavoletta, ca. 1415), or even the shield that Athena offered Perseus for his confrontation with the Gorgon, the author of this article proposes to approach this work by a play on associations. Ultimately, he sees in it, metaphorically, the image of a pendulum marking the time that Granche's photographs attempt to freeze

Perseus and the Gorgon: an experience in aesthetic capture

    No full text
The aesthetic capture experience is presented as of the impact undergone by the author in her encounter with Perseu and Medusa sculptured by Camille Claudel and all the issues consequent to that episode. She searches other author\'s similar encounters, such as that of Freud with Michelangelo\'s Moses aiming at identifying those more general elements composing that experience called in this paper as \"capture\". At the same time the author does not disconsider the subjective and singular aspects of encounters such as these. Reflecting over the sculpture she engages in biographic issues and their contextualization. Starting with the myth and the specificity of sculpturing through History, aesthetic readings and psychoanalytic conceptions about art and creation, the author presents an understanding of art as a product of the relation between spectator and art. In other words, this is an epistemological perspective where subject and object are not apart and the significance of the event is part of the experience. The essence of these understandings happens therefore as the experience occurs and not as the product of a deciphering act. A series of dialogs are presented in this paper between Psychoanalisis and Art, leading the reader to reflect on the possibilities of cross linking between these two expressions

Relict Bettongia lesueur warrens in Western Australian deserts

The Boodie or Burrowing Bettong Bettongia lesueur became extinct on the Australian mainland by about 1960 but, in some areas, left evidence of its previous distribution in the form of relict landscape features, which remain widespread in arid areas with hard soils. We recorded the location of landscape features ('mounds'), which we attributed to B. lesueur, in the western deserts during the 1980s and 1990s. There were two types of mounds - large, irregular shaped mounds of calcrete or clayey soils that were accumulated spoil from warren digging and smaller, regular, and largely circular mounds on lateritic surfaces. We mapped mounds, which are visible as obvious features in an otherwise often monotonous landscape, during vehicular traverses of desert tracks over a 10-15 year period. Mound density along one 215 km traverse in the northern Gibson Desert was 5.9±0.96 km-2. We measured attributes of both types of mound in the Gibson Desert. The former persist as warrens (often occupied by Rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus), have many entrances, are often large in aerial extent, and often associated with rock capping. The latter are largely symmetrical mounds, smaller (typically < 20 m in diameter), and with soil penetrability typically far greater than surrounding soil that often has a hard pan

Polyphony and the anxiety of influence in the fiction of Henry James

James's fiction, especially in the Middle Phase, centres on the figure of the artist and is characterized by, the two interrelated aspects which previous criticism has largely overlooked: the Bakhtinian 'polyphonic' -creation of 'author-thinkers'; and the conflict between ephebes and precursors, for which Harold-Bloom's concept of 'the-anxiety of influence' is the most illuminating model. Polyphony is the narrative mode, and influence is the intra-artistic, theme. These, as the Introduction to the thesis makes clear, are rehearsed in James's inaugural novel, Roderick Hudson. Rowland Mallet is an author-thinker, and his failure is caused by authorial limitations. His monologism -is impaired by his mistaking empathy for the authorial sympathy. Likewise, Hudson's failure does not arise from a mercurial temperament, but from a polyphonic shortcoming: not possessing the power of fiction to contain the fiction of power in, his mentor. And the relationships among the three artists - Gloriani, Hudson and Singleton - perfectly exemplify the Bloomian-theme. It is these two concepts, polyphony and influence, which are the major preoccupation in the Middle Phase; as, the works chosen demonstrate. These are a novella, a novel, and a number of short stories all of which have been unjustifiably neglected. Chapter One, on The Aspern Papers, argues that Tina Bordereau, far from being, the artless victim seen by many critics, actually challenges and defeats the narrator by the very form of her narrative. Her 'realist' discourse undermines his language of 'romance', and shows up its internal unstability. Chapter Two is an extensive study of the critical reception of The Tragic Muse. The most common areas of critical attention have been its contemporary topicality, its relation to previous novels on similar themes, and the possible genealogy of Gabriel Nash. Those have all missed the core of the work. - Chapter Three demonstrates how polyphony and the anxiety of influence make the novel what it really is. Influence arises from the juxtaposition of, and the wrestling between, artistic ephebes and their precursors (Nick and Nash,, Miriam and Madame Carre). The dialogic quality defined by Bakhtin is crucial to the proper, and even-handed, characterization of all, the conflicts in the novel. And since most of James's tales in the eighties and nineties -are about 'masters - and acolytes, the anxiety of influence remains central. Chapter Four is a study of 'The Author of Beltraffiol' and 'The Lesson of the Master'. Again the characters' manipulations are a crucial focus in a way that G6rard Genette's terminology helps to illuminate. The fact that the ephebe is the author-thinker emphasizes the inextricability of the Bakhtinian and the Bloomian in James. Just as polyphony offers a different focus for explicating the poetics of James's fiction; so the ephebal conflict provides the basis for a fresh perception of James's own artistic struggle

Alleviating Aversion to Artificial Intelligence in Digital Advertising with Humorous Disclosures

    No full text
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in creating online advertisements and posts. Yet, its prominent role in content creation remains often undisclosed due to potential aversive consumer reactions. In three studies, we examined how advertisers can transparently disclose AI authorship in ads without compromising marketing effectiveness. Study 1 was a proof-of-concept study, revealing that humor could alleviate negative evaluations (when the joke was less funny, AI received more negative ratings than a human author; however, when the joke was funnier, AI received similar ratings to a human author). Study 2 incorporated jokes into disclosures about AI authorship in advertising and found that humor reduced the negative effect of AI authorship because it shortened the psychological distance toward AI, positively impacting purchase intentions. Study 3 replicated these effects and tested a boundary condition, showing that humor mitigated algorithm aversion only when it was sufficiently funny

    African zoology

    No full text
This document continues the "African Zoology" series, providing systematic descriptions of large mammals and specific rodents found in Southern and Northern Africa. The text provides detailed taxonomic and physical characterisations for two species of the genus Catoblepas (Gnus) and one species of the genus Gerbillus (Gerbils). It begins with the Kokoon (Catoblepas Taurina), described as a large, ashy-grey antelope with a thick head, flowing dark mane, and horns that bend sideways and upwards. It also mentions the Brindled Gnoo (Catoblepas Gorgon), characterised by its white, round horns and larger stature. The second portion of the text transitions to the order Rodentia, describing Gerbillus Pygargus (the Northern Gerbil) from Upper Egypt, including a highly technical analysis of its dentition. The author notes the specific enamel folds on molar teeth and compares the dental system with that of the genus Erethizon

A recently discovered cameo and a few considerations on the glyptics from Apulum (Roman Dacia)

    No full text
In this paper, the author draws the attention of experts to a new glyphic discovery from Apulum. It is a schematic portrait of the Gorgon Medusa, depicted on a three-layered sardonyx. Based on parallels and the manufacturing technique, the author concludes that the piece originates from the workshops of Viminacium, Upper Moesia. The cameo is dated in the second half of the second century AD, prior the time when the canabae of the XIII Gemina legion rose to the status of municipium (ante AD 197). It is the only glyptic piece that bears the image of Medusa that's Dacian origin is certain. From an artistic point of view, it is a modest quality of execution, below the average provincial level. Furthermore, the author makes some remarks on the gems found in the collections of the National Museum of the Union in Alba Iulia, with a few additions and clarifications regarding the place of discovery and the possibility of the existence of a workshop of cavatores gemmarum at Apulum
