Experimental study of square and rectangular hollow section aluminium alloy columns
Get PDFRecently, aluminium alloys are extensively used in the construction sector because of their small self-weight, good corrosion resistance, low maintenance, high recyclability, and aesthetic appearance. However, one of the main disadvantages of these alloys is the low Young's modulus, which may cause a stability issue of aluminium structural members. Moreover, currently available design standards for predicting buckling resistance of aluminium columns are generally conservative. Therefore, additional research is required to evaluate the actual structural behaviour of aluminium columns under axial compression. The present study experimentally investigated the buckling response of 13 square and rectangular 6082-T6 aluminium alloy columns subjected to axial compression. The properties of the aluminium alloy were achieved from tensile test of coupon samples. The compressive load was employed concentrically by using a knife-edge hinge to ensure pin supports on both ends of the specimens. The structural response of the columns observed from the tests is presented in terms of ultimate strengths, failure modes and load-mid-height lateral displacement relationship. Furthermore, the test results of the specimens are compared with the ultimate strengths calculated by Eurocode 9, showing that the latter provides conservative and scattered design estimations
Numerical modelling of concrete-filled aluminium alloy 6082-T6 columns under axial compression
Get PDFAluminium alloys are characterised by numerous benefits, such as ease of fabrication, good strength-to-weight ratio, attractive appearance and high corrosion resistance. On the other hand, aluminium has low Young's Modulus and as a result, it is susceptible to structural instability phenomena that can subsequently affect the structural integrity. Improved strength and stiffness can be achieved by combining aluminium alloys with concrete. The present work investigates numerically the response of concrete-filled aluminium tubular members under axial compression. In particular, 6082-T6 extruded aluminium alloy rectangular and square hollow sections filled with C30 concrete are examined. Finite element models are developed accounting for geometric and material non-linearities. Upon validation against experimental data, the finite element models are used to conduct a thorough parametric study over a wide range of structural members likely to occur in practice to investigate their structural behaviour under axial compression. The obtained load capacities are discussed and remarks on the structural response and on the buckling behaviour are reported. Design recommendations for the buckling strength of concrete-filled aluminium tubular columns on the basis of the numerical analyses are also made

No full textIn this article author depicts influence of French political philosophy of the Enlightenment period, represented by Gabriel Bonnot de Mably, on views of typical sarmatian conservatist, namely Lithuanian Master of the Kitchen, Michał Wielhorski. Wielhorski, representing mentality characteristic for this group, during so‑called Czaplic’s sejm of 1766 defended the law of liberum veto and opposed reforms proposed by Czartoryskis’ “Familia”. After forming of Bar confederation in 1768 he became its representative on French court, what allowed him to contact Mably. As a result, political views of Master of Kitchen undergoal most complete revaluation, what can be seen in treatise published in 1775 O przywróceniu dawnego rządu według pierwiastkowych Rzeczypospolitej ustaw (Eng. Of restoration of former government by Republic’s fundamental laws). Seeing in the Dark: Investigating the Photographic Act, Object, and Experience
Get PDFThrough my practice of colour darkroom manipulations and site installation, I investigate the photographic act as a unique phenomenon, serving a visual practice that embraces iteration and futurity. Photographs are in their very nature a unique set of variables and limits fixed together to produce an image. They are the surface negotiating causality (through time and calibration) that allows a viewer to witness traces of the photographic act through an experience of a photographic object and site installation. This negotiation is located in the recursive synthesis of the photographic act, the photographic object, and the photographic experience. Throughout this thesis I articulate how a material practice such as my own addresses an embodied investigation of limits both in a darkroom process and in the installation of work

Get PDFAutor recenzuje książkę Andrzeja Szahaja, „O interpretacji”. W swym szkicu zwraca uwagę na prekursorstwo tez głoszonych przez Szahaja w latach 90. XX wieku wobec polskiej recepcji problematyki zwrotów: etycznego, politycznego i kulturowego. Ponadto, stawia tezę, iż neopragmatystyczne stanowisko Szahaja można także uznać za stanowisko hermeneutyczne sensu largo, przeciwstawione paradygmatowi formalno-strukturalno-semiotycznemu nowoczesnego literaturo-znawstwa. Z tego punktu widzenia autor podejmuje krytykę Szahajowskiej krytyki hermeneutyki, starając się dowieść, że „w tekście istnieje raczej coś, niźli nic”, zwracając uwagę na rozmaite przesądzenia kulturowe Szahaja, które determinują jego ocenę nie tylko hermeneutyki, ale także na przykład dekonstrukcji. Całość szkicu utrzymana jest jednak w tonie życzliwej polemiki lub też, inaczej rzecz ujmując, „sporu w rodzinie”.The author reviews the book by Andrzej Szahaj, “On interpretation”. He points out that the ideas Shahaj proposed in the 1990s anticipated Polish reception of the ethical, political and cultural turn. Moreover, he argues that Szahaj’s neopragmatic approach can also be considered hermeneutical in the broad sense, opposed to the formal-structural-semiotic paradigm of modern literary criticism. From this point of view, the author undertakes criticism of Szahaj’s criticism of hermeneutics, in an attempt to prove that “in the text there exists something rather than nothing”, noting the variety of Szahaj’s cultural prejudices that affected his view of not only hermeneutics, but also, for example, of deconstruction. Streszczenie
Od zarania dziejów człowiek nie godził się z nieuchronnością śmierci, jednak religijne dogmaty i tradycja podważały możliwość przeciwstawiania się jej. Zasady prowadzenia resuscytacji krążeniowo-oddechowej ulegały znaczącej ewolucji od pierwszych prób ożywiania do aktualnie obowiązujących standardów postępowania. Niniejsza publikacja przedstawia przegląd literatury dotyczącej historii rozwoju czynności resuscytacyjnych.
Abstract
Since the beginning of time the human being could not accept the inevitability of death, yet religious dogma and tradition undermined the possibility to fight it. Instructions for how resuscitation should be practiced has significantly changed over decades. The Dark Side of Poland? Neo-Noir and Police Cinema in the Work of Patryk Vega
No full textWśród najistotniejszych cech nowego kina czarnego (neo-noir) szczególną rolę pełni transkulturowy charakter tego fenomenu. We współczesnej popkulturze neo-noir stał się jedną z dominujących tendencji, łatwo adaptując się do lokalnych uwarunkowań kinematografii narodowych. Artykuł jest poświęcony jednej z polskich realizacji wpisujących się w tę estetykę. Filmowa i serialowa twórczość Patryka Vegi nawiązuje do neo-noiru oraz do konwencji amerykańskiego kina policyjnego. Abstrahując od rozważań o charakterze genologicznym, autorka przygląda się specyfice tych powiązań. Czy kino policyjne w neo-noirowym wariancie stanowi w dorobku Vegi zaledwie inspirację czy też podlega ono reinterpretacji, będąc próbą zaadaptowania konwencji hollywoodzkich? A może należałoby spoglądać na twórczość reżysera jak na rodzaj imitacji modnej estetyki? Wątpliwości te autorka próbuje rozstrzygnąć, przyglądając się wybranym realizacjom Vegi, zarówno kinowym (PitBull, Służby specjalne), jak i telewizyjnym (m.in. Instynkt, Ciemna strona miasta).The transcultural aspect is an important feature of the new cinema noir (neo-noir). In contemporary pop culture neo-noir has become one of the dominant trends, easily adapting to the local conditions of national cinematography. The article is devoted to one of the Polish films that fall into this category. Films and TV series by Patryk Vega refer to neo-noir and the convention of American police films. Genologic considerations aside, the author looks at the nature of the connections between Polish neo-noir and American film. Is police film of the neo-noir variety merely an inspiration for Vega, or does it undergo reinterpretation and an attempt at adaptation of Hollywood conventions? Or perhaps we should look at the work of the director as a selected works by Vega, including those made for the cinema (Pitbull, Special Forces) and those made for television (among others: Instinct, Dark Side of the City)
Wielki Inny niewzruszony. O książce Piotra Krupińskiego Co sięśni zwierzętom? Eseje z pogranicza zoofilologii i psychoanalizy
No full textThe author of the article reviews the book of Piotr Krupiński, Co się śni zwierzętom? Eseje z pogranicza zoofilologii i psychoanalizy (What Do Animals Dream about? Essays on Zoophilology and Psychoanalysis). The initial parts of the article introduce the concept of zoophilology and discuss its paradoxical nature. Then, the author re-constructs the content of the reviewed book. In the following parts, he challenges Krupiński’s ideas, focusing on the issues of Freudian psychoanalysis and representationalism as ineffective ways of overcoming the anthropocentrism. For, they leave the big Other of the anthropocentric reality principle untouched. Therefore, the author suggests moving beyond representationalism. In his opinion, it would result in better implementation of Krupiński’s objectives. He follows mainly the practitioners of the new materialism: Donna Haraway and Karen Barad

No full textCelem artykułu jest przybliżenie założeń teoretycznych zjawiska, które określić można jako „plakat społeczny”. W pierwszej części pracy opisuję początki, źródła oraz historyczny kontekst powstania i funkcjonowania tzw. Polskiej Szkoły Plakatu, która na przełomie kilku dekad XX wieku budowała znaczenie plakatu, nie tylko jako dzieła artystycznego (z wyraźnie widoczną funkcją estetyczną), ale również jako wytworu o silnym oddziaływaniu społecznym. Druga część tekstu ma zdecydowanie bardziej osobisty charakter. Przedstawiam w niej tematykę swoich plakatów oraz zdarzenia i impulsy, które skłoniły mnie do jej podjęcia. Decydującymi elementami w doborze tematów jest dla mnie społeczeństwo i zachodzące w nim zmiany. A plakat to, moim zdaniem, najbardziej ludzka forma przekazu myśli w przestrzeni miejskiej, będąca jednocześnie ważnym głosem w „walce ulicznej”.The aim of the article is to present the theoretical assumptions of the phenomenon that can be described as a “social poster”. In the first part of the work, I describe the origins, sources and historical context of the creation and functioning of the so-called Polish School of Posters. It is a school which, at the turn of several decades of the last century, built the significance of the poster, not only as an artistic work (with a clearly visible aesthetic function), but also as a product with a strong social impact. The second part of the text is definitely more personal. In it, I present the subject of my posters as well as the events and impulses that prompted me to undertake it. For me, the decisive elements in the selection of topics are society and the changes taking place in it.
