    Invertebrate troponin C typically contains Ca2+-specific binding sites, sites II and IV, in the N- and C-terminal domains, respectively. To investigate the roles of these sites for Ca2+-dependent regulation of muscle contraction, we generated lobster troponin C mutants, and analyzed their Ca2+-binding properties and regulatory effects on actomyosin-tropomyosin Mg-ATPase activity. The results suggest that Ca2+ binding to site IV is responsible for regulation at relatively low Ca2+ concentrations, while site II has an essential role in full activation at higher Ca2+ concentrations. Australian Institute of Marine Sciences and National Cancer Institute, 18/X/1989.</p> <p>Morphology: Solitary circular sponge with a bulbous cushion base 52–83 mm wide and 25–40 mm in height (Fig. 9 A–G). Partially burrowing with a single large contractile and retractile central papilla, 13–19 mm wide, height 0–3 mm above the dermis in preservative, and judging by Fig. 9 A, B equal in height as width in vivo. There is a large single oscule at the top of the papillae (1–2 mm wide). The sponge is grey/brown in life and in ethanol, reflecting the colouration of the surrounding mud/silt. The papillae are ivory to cream in life and ethanol (Fig. 9 A–G). The sponge is firm but compressible, and is covered in a soft covering of fine hairs (except the papilla).</p> <p>Skeleton: The ectosomal skeleton is composed of an erect palisade of smaller tylostyles on the base, absent from the papilla, with larger styles protruding out from the choanosomal tracts (Fig. 9 H, I). There is abundant sand/detritus on the surface providing grey colouration to the ectosome. The choanosomal skeleton consists of huge multispicular tracts diverging and providing support to the smaller ectosomal tylostyles (Fig. 9 H, I). Stellate formations of smaller tylostyles occur between the tracts (Fig. 9 J).</p> <p>Spicules: Choanosomal principal styles tapering sight subtylostyle bases (hastate), tapering to sharp points (Fig. 9 K). Ectosomal tylostyles are straight to slightly curved and have a prominent tylote base (Fig. 9 L). Stellate tylostyles in the choanosome between the tracts, are indistinguishable from the tylostyles in the ectosome. Spicular measurements are given in Table 5.</p> <p>Distribution: Antarctic and Subantarctic waters</p> <p>Ecology: Partially burrowing in soft mud</p> <p>Molecular data: no unambiguous 28S-C region barcode could be generated from this species.</p> <p> Remarks: These specimens match Kirkpatrick’s (1907) and subsequent authors’ descriptions of this species albeit with some variable spicule measurements between the publications. Plotkin & Janussen (2008) reviewed the various authors’ descriptions and measurements compared to their material, which is not repeated here. The location of this specimen from the Lord Howe Plateau is a range extension from the previous Antarctica and subantarctic records. In Plotkin & Janussen (2008), the <i>P. invaginata</i> samples from Antarctica deposited at the SMF, contain novel sceptre like spicules. Unfortunately, the <i>P. invaginata</i> specimens that were sequenced (Plotkin <i>et al.</i> 2017) were from a different cruise and are deposited at ZMBN. Plotkin <i>et al.</i> (2017) makes no mention of whether these samples have the sceptre like spicules. The morphology, skeleton and spicules match the original and more recent descriptions these new specimens also contain the stellate formations of tylostyles as reported by Kirkpatrick, (1907), Hentschel (1914), Koltun (1964), Boury-Esnault & van Beveren (1982), and Plotkin & Janussen (2008).</p>Published as part of <i>Ekins, Merrick, Erpenbeck, Dirk, Wörheide, Gert & Hooper, John N.     Somatic symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder from the DSM-IV: Associations with pathological worry and depression symptoms in a nonclinical sample

    The present study investigates specificity of the six somatic symptoms that are associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), according to the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A nonclinical sample of 183 students provided severity ratings for (a) restlessness, (b) easily fatigued, (c) difficulty concentrating, (d) irritability, (e) muscle tension, and (f) sleep disturbance. In addition, they responded to questionnaires assessing pathological worry and depression symptoms. Partial correlations and multiple regression analyses indicated that only muscle tension showed a unique relation to pathological worry. In contrast, difficulty concentrating was exclusively related to depression symptoms. Present findings corroborate psychophysiological findings that elevated muscle tension is a specific characteristic of pathological worriers. Moreover, they suggest that the problem of unclear boundaries between GAD and major depression may be reduced if future revisions of the somatic symptom list for GAD emphasize muscle tension while de-emphasizing difficulty concentrating

    On Si IV and C IV broad absorption line variability in the UV spectra of 10 BALQSOs

    In this article, we study the variability of Si iv and C iv broad absorption lines (BALs) between two different epochs in the case of 10 broad absorption-line quasi-stellar objects (BALQSOs). By performing multicomponent analysis of Si iv and C iv broad absorption troughs, we analyse each BAL trough to find the individual and uniquely determined number of components it consists of. By measuring the radial velocity, full width at half-maximum (FWHM) and optical depth of each component, we study the kinematics, physical conditions and variability of each absorber in the line of sight. Our results suggest that Si iv and C iv BAL troughs arise from clumpy gas clouds that have similar locations, kinematic structure and physical conditions and that both ions originate in the same gas clouds. Our findings favour ionization changes over the moving-cloud scenario as the main driver of BAL variability. However, the possible contribution of other mechanisms cannot be ruled out, given our small quasar sample. Finally, we find strong evidence indicative of density stratification within the absorbing gas, suggesting that quasar outflows are far from being smooth and homogeneous. © 2019 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society

    The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey : First Spectroscopic Data from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the Second Phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment

    The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020 and will be followed by SDSS-V.Peer reviewe

    Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region
