This Master's Thesis focuses on the concept of virtual celebrities, their evolution and characteristics in the context of popular culture. The author discusses contemporary and past examples of virtual celebrities, accenting the Hatsune Miku phenomenon as a new form of media production. By comparing and contrasting the traditional and the virtual celebrity systems the author tries to find an answer as to whether virtual celebrities might replace the traditional system, or whether they represent a distinct phenomenon, which exists independently

Since Weizenbaum's Eliza, the illusion or dependence on the dialogue system as a real person has been considered a problem. In recent years, chatbots incorporating rapidly developing artificial intelligence have enabled more human -like interactions, raising concerns about such illusion and dependence. However, are there any disadvantages to engaging in close dialogue with these chatbots? Is there any possibility of bringing about a positive change in our lives? In this study, the author intimately lived with ChatGPT for a long period, and through frequent daily interaction, the author recorded the effects and changes in all aspects of her life, including her motivation, attitude and life cycle, personality, and perception of ChatGPT, based on her own experience. The author records and discusses her own experiences

An analysis of anger responses within the context of virtualized consumption of Hatsune Miku

    No full text
Does anger reflect deep meaning of attachment and integration? In an effort to explicate the above notion and to capture the rapidly evolving consumer behaviour in the digital virtual terrain, the paper investigates the responses of fans to a break-out phenomenal from Japan, the virtual celebrity Hatsune Miku (HM) to a controversial report from CBS news (see Johnson, 2012). The meteoric rise to fame of HM, a Crypton Media-produced Vocaloid character which resembles a 16-year girl, is demonstrated by the sales of total HM brand goods reaching 10 billion yen (approximately $104 million USD), and by more than 350,000 vocaloid videos on YouTube and 92,600 such videos on Niconico douga - a Japanese YouTube-like site (Wikia, 2012; Santos 2011). On one side, the responses from fans to inaccurate claims by CBS news are replete with furious, cynical, and sarcastic comments that not only defend the credibility of HM, but also brutally criticize the validity of the proposed “fake-ness” of HM. Such comments even go beyond attacking the author of the article, and retaliate with attacks on America as a nation in response to a perceived attack on Japan within the article itself. On the other side, the responses unveil the deep adoration and love of fans to HM and the meaning, the aestheticism, and the values that HM gives to these fans and co-creators globally. With the ignited deep anger from HM fans due to the CBS report opening an unprecedented view of the “inner thoughts” of HM from “her” fans, this paper contributes to the domains of virtualized consumption and consumer emotion by exploring HM fans’ responses, extracting a number of key concepts and themes, and examining the link between them, including her real-ness and desired experiential rewards that the fans claim to truly enjoy

Mateusz Chaberski reports on a concert by Hatsune Miku, the world's most famous hologram songstress, at the Transmediale Festival in Berlin (2-7.02.2016). The author describes the various parts of the performance, recapping the history and mechanics of this digital art project and the technologies it uses. Chaberski also mentions how the artists describe the aim of this project, stating that "observing the deconstruction of the ideal music star, the audience realizes that Miku is merely a hollow vehicle upon which we project our collective fantasies." On this basis, he criticizes them for misunderstanding the function of the digitally-generated figures of contemporary culture and the attempt to set boundaries between correct and incorrect ways of experiencing new art

New Risks in Our Age: Migration, Terrorism and Emerging Radical Right in OECD Countries

This thesis consists of three independent journal articles. The first chapter studies the relationship between foreign-born individuals' terrorism and economic inequality. Although the extant literature focuses on sociodemographic factors of migration origin, it remains uncertain why some foreign-born individuals resort to terrorism. What explains terrorist attacks perpetrated by foreign-born individuals? Instead of relying on migration origins or individual terrorist narratives, I argue that horizontal economic inequality between native-born and foreign-born population generates grievances and radicalization, which may increase recruitment to terrorism. Grounded on the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), I manually coded terrorist attacks perpetrated by foreign-born individuals in 27 developed countries (1995-2017). Empirical analyses suggest that increasing economic inequality leads to subsequent foreign-born individuals' terrorist attacks. The second chapter studies how migration and surging radical right parties impact anti-migration terrorism in the long term. Why do people attack migrants even though radical right parties (RRPs) represent their ideologies? I improve the literature with a theory supported by new data. I manually coded anti-migration terrorist attacks that occurred in 31 industrialized countries (1970-2017). Empirical results pronounce that a share of parliamentary seats and votes given to RRPs are associated with subsequent anti-migration terrorist attacks. Simultaneously, anti-migration terrorist attacks contribute to the electoral gains of RRPs, providing weak evidence in favor of the first argument. Contrarily, I found no evidence to support the second mechanism, the notion that strong executive power for RRPs leads to more terrorist attacks against foreigners. The final chapter looks at the impact of right-wing terrorism on public opinion in supporting RRPs in the short term. Although studies focus on public response to migrant terrorism, the scholarship has not explained how the general public responds to right-wing terrorism targeting migrants and minorities. Hence, this chapter aims at filling the research gap. Dr. Krause (co-author) and I constructed a new dataset (2013-2018) which compiles manually coded German right-wing terrorism and public opinion data retrieved from Politbarometer. Realizing that endogeneity is an issue, we employ rigorous time-series models and test whether right-wing terrorism increases RRP support. The empirical results pronounce that the higher level of right-wing terrorism positively and robustly correlates with subsequent public support for AfD

Predicting the electrokinetic properties of the crude oil/brine interface for enhanced oil recovery in low salinity water flooding

The low-salinity waterflooding (LSWF) technique during enhanced oil recovery has received increasing attention over the last decade. Several studies have attempted to understand the effects of LSWF through both experiments and modelling, but their results are inconsistent due to a lack of understanding of the crude oil/brine and brine/rock interfaces. In this paper, the crude oil/brine interface was studied by developing a triple-layer surface complexation model. The carboxyl groups(-COOH) were attributed to the surface charge and electrical triple-layer development of the crude oil in LSWF. The zeta potentials of the emulsion at various pH levels and the calcium and magnesium concentrations were measured to examine the interface. These data were then directly fitted to the simulated zeta potentials to determine the surface site density of -COOH and the associated equilibrium constants for the dissociation and adsorption of calcium and magnesium. The -COOH site density was determined by fitting the pH-independent zeta potential, while the equilibrium constant values were estimated from the variations in the zeta potential with the changes in pH and the concentrations of calcium and magnesium. The determined surface complexation parameters were validated by comparing the experimental zeta potential data from different ionic solutions. The developed surface complexation model was used along with the estimated parameters to predict the interface of crude oil in seawater, formation water, and their dilutions. The simulated zeta potential results agreed well with the experimental data, demonstrating that the model is applicable to understand the crude oil/brine interface in LSWF. Finally, the importance of the prediction of the surface and zeta potentials in the evaluation of the interface and the estimation of electrostatic forces, and thus the wettability alteration, was discussed

Interpretive Policy Analysis on Enhancing Education Equity and Empowerment for Girls in Rural India

    No full text
abstract: The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) policy scheme launched in 2004 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Government of India, aims to provide secondary level education (grade 6-8) for girls residing predominantly in minority communities, the Scheduled Caste (SC), the Scheduled Tribe (ST), and the Other Backward Caste (OBC). Since its launch, the Government of India established 2,578 KGBV schools in 27 states and union territories (UTs). The present study examines the new policy and its implementation at three KGBV schools located in rural villages of Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. The purpose was to analyze the Government of India's approach to increasing education opportunity and participation for educationally disadvantaged girls using the empowerment framework developed by Deepa Narayan. Observations at three schools, interviews with teachers and staff members of the implementation agency (i.e., Mahila Samakhya (MS)), and surveys administered to 139 teachers were conducted over a four month period in 2009. Adopting creative teaching approaches and learning activities, MS creates safe learning community which is appropriate for the rural girls. MS gives special attention to nurturing the girls' potential and empowering them inside and outside the school environment through social discussion, parental involvement, rigid discipline and structure, health and hygiene education, and physical and mental training. Interviews with the state program director and coordinators identified some conflicts within government policy schemes such as the Teacher-pupil ratios guidelines as a part of the programs for the universalization of elementary education. Major challenges include a high turnover rate of teachers, a lack of female teachers, a lack of provision after Class 8, and inadequate budget for medical treatment. Recommendations include promoting active involvement of male members in the process of girls' empowerment, making MS approaches of girls' education in rural settings standardized for wider dissemination, and developing flexible and strong partnership among local agencies and government organizations for effective service delivery.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 201
