Les Fables de la Fontaine mises en scène par Dedieu: Le Lièvre et la Tortue et Autres Fables
Here is one of those little surprises for a book collector. In 2008 Seuil published this book, apparently without a title-page. The cover was the closest thing to a title-page, and the cover read: Livre II: Les Fables de la Fontaine mises en scène par Dedieu. Now there is a title-page, and both on the title-page and on the cover the title has changed to Les Fables de la Fontaine mises en scène par Dedieu. Livre II is gone. The cover now adds a sub-title: Le Lièvre et la Tortue et Autres Fables. The year of publication is one year later. The earlier version included bibliographical material on the back cover. This material has been removed from there in this later version and put onto the new last page created by freeing an endpaper at the back as at the front. Might one conjecture that a first and second isolated Dedieu fable pop-up book did so well that a series was suddenly planned, and numbering the various members of the series became too tricky? Would it not be easier to identify them rather by specifying the first fable? As I wrote earlier, this book contains six exquisite pop-ups: TH, OR, The Fox and the Goat, The Heron, FS, and WL. Dedieu's special gift is to create depth by getting four or five layers into the pop-up picture. Among his best efforts is The Fox and the Goat, which gives a goat's-eye-view of the fox appearing at the top of the well. In each case, the fable text is presented on the left and the right of the central pop-up picture. Exquisite work! This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: FrenchJean de La Fontain
Les Fables de la Fontaine mises en scène par Dedieu: Le Cerf se Voyant dans l'Eau et Autres Fables
Here is the Seuil original behind Der Hirsch, der sich im Wasser spiegelt: Die schönsten Fabeln von La Fontaine from Knesebeck in 2014. It is also related to Livre II: Les Fables de la Fontaine mises en scène par Dedieu. I wrote of the French edition that I was ordering several of his books in French and German. Here is the first arrival! The pop-ups are again exquisite. Dedieu's special gift is to create depth by getting four or five layers into the pop-up picture. Among his best efforts is the title pop-up, which plays with reflection and dimensionality. The background of DW suggests a net. That suggestion is perfect for this fable about confinement and freedom. Another great use of dimensionality occurs in The Rabbits and the Frogs, as the frogs leaping into the water become the backdrop for our viewing of the rabbit. In each case, the fable text is presented on the left and the right of the central pop-up picture. Exquisite work! The book has a solid feel often lacking in pop-up books. This French version costs $23.90 less than the German version! This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: FrenchJean de La Fontain
Der Rabe und der Fuchs: Die schönsten Fabeln von La Fontaine
Here is my fifth Dedieu pop-up book, the third German. It has not appeared yet in English, and I just ordered the French. This is again exquisite work. The six fables presented here are FC; GA; OF; WC; LM, and TMCM. The hint of the outside world in TMCM is good, as is the movable proximity of frog to ox in OF and of fox to crow in FC. In each case, the fable text is presented on the left and the right of the central pop-up picture. As in the other four Dedieu copies I have, the book is beautifully put together. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: Germa
To determine the political dimensions that the subject Moslems' question had in Spain during the XVI century, the author makes a mdel of assimilation on a local scale. After that, Dedieu elucidates the ambiguous and changing relations between the subject Moslem minority and the digerent contemporary powers, emphasizing the relationship between Moslems and the Inquisition. Dedieu maintains that the destiny of the subject Moslems did not depend on the Establishment's unilateral attitude but on a more complicated social position

K3 curves with index k>1
International audienceAbstract Let KC g k be the moduli stack of pairs ( S , C ) with S a K 3 surface and C ⊆ S a genus g curve with divisibility k in Pic ( S ) . In this article we study the forgetful map c g k : ( S , C ) ↦ C from KC g k to M g for k>1 k > 1 . First we compute by geometric means the dimension of its general fibre. This turns out to be interesting only when S is a complete intersection or a section of a Mukai variety. In the former case we find the existence of interesting Fano varieties extending C in its canonical embedding. In the latter case this is related to delicate modular properties of the Mukai varieties. Next we investigate whether c g k dominates the locus in M g of k -spin curves with the appropriate number of independent sections. We are able to do this only when S is a complete intersection, and obtain in these cases some classification results for spin curves

Pioneering Women in Cryptology
Abstract: Riverbank Laboratories - a think-tank outside of Chicago, Illinois - was one of the only U.S. facilities to seriously study cryptology in the early 1900’s. It was also home to several talented women who would go on to become leaders in cryptology. Elizebeth Smith Friedman and Agnes Meyer Driscoll were two of these women.
Elizebeth Smith Friedman (1892 – 1980), an English major and poetry enthusiast, began working at Riverbank in 1916. It was here that her love affair with cryptology began. She was hired to analyze Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets in the hope of finding a hidden cipher that would reveal that Sir Francis Bacon was the true author of Shakespeare’s work. She would go on to work for the U.S. Navy, Treasury Department, and Coast Guard where she cracked thousands of codes. She is often credited as being America’s first female cryptanalyst and as one of the most remarkable women to ever work for the U.S. government.
Agnes Meyer Driscoll (1889 – 1971), a mathematics major, began her career as a high school teacher and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War I. She began learning about cryptography in the Code and Signal Section and travelled to Riverbank to continue her studies in 1920. She spent over 40 years in cryptology, led the attack on several Japanese naval systems, and was the Navy’s principal cryptanalyst for many years.
In this talk, we will dive deeper into the lives and careers of female pioneers in cryptology like Elizebeth Smith Friedman and Agnes Meyer Driscoll. We will examine examples of codes they broke and will discuss their impact in the field of cryptography.

Coupling of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cycles in sediments from a Mediterranean lagoon: a seasonal perspective
Experimental data and simulations were used to investigate the seasonal coupling between carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cycles in marine sediments from a eutrophic shallow lagoon in the Mediterranean Sea area. A negative seasonal correlation was observed between oxygen consumption and coupled nitrification–denitrification rates in surface sediments. Elevated values of oxygen consumption rates were reached during warm periods (up to 87.7 mmol m–2 d–1) whereas nitrification and denitrification rates remained close to the lowest rates reported for coastal sediments (values around 0.021 to 0.35 mmol N m–2 d–1 for nitrification and 0.014 to 0.045 mmol N m–2 d–1 for denitrification). A steady-state diagenetic model closely represented the seasonal negative correlation of oxygen uptake, coupled nitrification–denitrification rates, the vertical distribution patterns of pore water oxygen and the solid phase distribution of organic carbon when nitrification inhibition by sulfide was included. Simulation adjusted to field data also highlighted the importance of oxygen penetration depth in the seasonal variation of nitrification. The modelling indicated that anaerobic metabolism was the most significant pathway (65 to 80%) during organic matter mineralization with a clear seasonal increase during warm periods. These warm periods were also characterized by the higher benthic demand of oxygen mostly used to re-oxidize the by-products from anaerobic reactions (from 57 to 82%), the other part being used for carbon mineralization.
