Random walk over a hypersphere
In a recent paper the author had shown that a special case of S. M. Joshi
transform (so named after the author's reverent father) of distributions
(Sba f)(x)=〈f(y), lFl(a0;b0;ixy) lFl(a;b;−2ixy)〉
is a characteristic function of a spherical distribution. Using the methods developed in that paper; the problem of distribution of the distance CD, where C and D are points niformly distributed in a hypersphere, has been discussed in the present paper. The form of characteristic function has also been obtained by the method of projected distribution.
A generalization of Hammersley's result has also been developed. The main purpose of the paper is to show that although the use of characteristic functions, using the method of Bochner, is available in problems of random walk yet distributional S. M. Joshi transform can be used as a natural tool has been proved for the first time in the paper
Strained SOI FINFET SRAM design
Impact of strained silicon effects in double-gated FinFET structures on static random access memory (SRAM) cell functionality is presented. Three FinFET silicon-on-insulator (SOI) SRAM cell embodiments representing unstrained, strained, and NFET-only-strained devices are compared against a planar PDSOI SRAM cell design. The metrics encompass both static and dynamic behavior of the cell and are analyzed through 2-D process hardware-calibrated device models (Lg = 25 nm). Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow
In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow

Conduction mode laser welding with beam shaping using a deformable mirror
This study explores the possibility of tailoring the fusion zone in conduction mode laser welding using a deformable mirror for beam shaping of multi-kilowatt continuous wave laser sources. Three power density distributions were shaped and used in bead on plate welding of Ti64 plates in conduction mode at three travel speeds. The effect on melt pool free surface geometry, cross section, microstructure and hardness profiles was measured and studied. It is shown that the geometry of the melt pool can be modified using a deformable mirror. A narrower and longer melt pool or a wider, shorter and shallower one were indeed obtained forming Gaussian-elliptical power density distributions oriented along and transverse to the travel direction, respectively. The latter distribution could be a favourable option for laser beam additive manufacturing as it could improve process efficiency while reducing remelting of the previous layer. This system has also a promising potential for adaptive process control since it could change fundamentally the beam shape at a rate faster than 10 ms
Nanosecond electric pulses penetrate the nucleus and enhance speckle formation
Nanosecond electric pulses generate nanopores in the interior membranes of cells and modulate cellular functions. Here, we used confocal microscopy and flow cytometry to observe Smith antigen antibody (Y12) binding to nuclear speckles, known as small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles (snRNPs) or intrachromatin granule clusters (IGCs), in Jurkat cells following one or five 10 ns, 150 kV/cm pulses. Using confocal microscopy and flow cytometry, we observed changes in nuclear speckle labeling that suggested a disruption of pre-messenger RNA splicing mechanisms. Pulse exposure increased the nuclear speckled substructures by 2.5-fold above basal levels while the propidium iodide (PI) uptake in pulsed cells was unchanged. The resulting nuclear speckle changes were also cell cycle dependent. These findings suggest that 10 ns pulses directly influenced nuclear processes, such as the changes in the nuclear RNA–protein complexes
A new species of Plectocarpon (Roccellaceae, lichenised ascomycetes) from India
A new gall-inducing and lirellate lichenicolous fungus, Plectocarpon diedertzianum Y. Joshi, Upadhyay et Chandra, is described from Kumaun Himalayan regions of India colonising thallus of various parmelioid lichens (Flavoparmelia caperata, Myelochroa aurulenta, Parmotrema crinitum, P. melanothrix, P. reticulatum, Punctelia subrudecta). The new species is characterised by black, epruinose rounded to lirellate ascomata with a carbonised surface and a ±thalline pseudomargin, as well as a carbonised, sterile stromatic tissue, 4-spored asci and 3-septate hyaline ascospores
Measurement of the inclusive φ cross-section in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV
The cross-section for inclusive φ meson production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of the φ transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the region 0.6< pT <5.0 GeV/c and 2.44< y <4.06. The cross-section for inclusive φ production in this kinematic range is σ(pp→φX)=1758±19(stat) +43−14(syst)±182(scale) μb, where the first systematic uncertainty depends on the pT and y region and the second is related to the overall scale. Predictions based on the Pythia 6.4 generator underestimate the cross-section
Magnetic properties measurement of soft magnetic composite material (SOMALOY 700) by using 3-D tester
© 2017 Author(s). Core losses of rotating electrical machine can be predicted by identifying the magnetic properties of the magnetic material. The magnetic properties should be properly measured since there are some variations of vector flux density in the rotating machine. In this paper, the SOMALOY 700 material has been measured under x, y and z- axes flux density penetration by using the 3-D tester. The calibrated sensing coils are used in detecting the flux densities which have been generated by the Labview software. The measured sensing voltages are used in obtaining the magnetic properties of the sample such as magnetic flux density B, magnetic field strength H, hysteresis loop which can be used to calculate the total core loss of the sample. The results of the measurement are analyzed by using the Mathcad software before being compared to another material
