Daughter of fortune: Isabel Allende's popularity from a readership perspective
The primary aim of this thesis is to explore and critically interrogate Isabel Allende’s popularity cross-culturally in Britain and Spain. It analyses readers’ responses to Allende’s works as well as the discourses surrounding her public representation, an approach that is ‘readerly’ but must also take account of production and text. This approach is intended to further the understanding of Allende’s work which so far has always been analysed from a textual perspective. However, the relationship between Allende’s popularity, her texts, public representation and readers has not been yet analysed in detail. This thesis is innovative in other ways too. Methodologically, it approaches readers through the under studied cultural form of the reading group. It also incorporates a comparative dimension by looking at the reception of Allende in two different cultural contexts: the British and Spanish respectively. Finding out about Allende’s popularity has involved asking readers about their reading experiences as well as analysing the production of discourses around her public representation. Paul Ricoeur’s (1984, 1988) perspective on authorial intentions and readers’ responses to texts helps in understanding the intricacies surrounding what is involved in reading any text. It draws attention to Allende’s and her publishers’ authorial strategies, her ‘strategies of persuasion’ and the specificity of the lives and contexts of British and Spanish reading publics. Equally, this ‘readerly’ approach draws on feminist audience research and primarily on the work of Ien Ang and Janice Radway. Their work with viewers and readers respectively is particularly useful in establishing and developing methodological parameters for the study of reading groups. As a whole, this thesis contributes to the understanding of Allende’s cross-cultural popularity by situating readers at the centre
From thought to fiction it wishes to express a transit in the work of Francisco Ayala, which starts with the exile in America in 1939 and continues towards the intellectual exercise of the Spanish author in this period. Representative of a liberal thought which bases itself in the rational and historicist knowledge, developed in the field of Sociology and of the politics, he acts in the Argentinian and Latin-american as a general rule environment through articles published in magazines and newspapers, theoretical books and translations. His works aims to reflect upon the historical events of the first half of the XXth century and of the pos-war period in the world context of the crisis of modernity, with the objective of understanding the social changes and to situate the role of the educated elite as far as the urgencies of the mass society are concerned, noticing how the state of the education has found itself besieged due to the advances of the images of the communication media. The exile puts Ayala facing an emergent reality and decentred from the countries where he had traveled to. This provokes a gradual deviation from the sociological activity to a predominant literary dedication. At the end of the exile, during the 70#s, and of the trips, which this period had offered him, he finally incorporates the images into the texts and, even keeping the awareness of his self, the author experiences the possibilities of being others through the fictional narrative. This process characterizes an advance over the limits of the modernist thought, engaging Francisco Ayala into a late-modern situation for experimenting, during the 50#s and the 60#s, elements credited to the post-modernism

During the first half of sixteenth century and in the Salernitan court of the last prince Sanseverino and his wife Isabel de Vilamarí (a lady coming from a noble Catalan family) an intense intellectual climate developed. Orientadora: Profa. Dra. The present research is based on the assumption that the text is an individual result of
an intercultural experience. Likewise, taking into consideration the Berman's (2007)
perception of the translated text the place where the culture of the other is manifested, we
objectify, in our translation project of Lilus Kikus (1954) by Elena Poniatowska, to cultivate
elements that state directly or indirectly issues that constitute Mexican society and culture.
Thus, from a careful look at the linguistic-cultural multiplicity that accompanies the life and
work of the author, we track the following path: 1. We carry out a literary approach that
contemplates reflections that guide the author, her writing and the work Lilus Kikus; 2. we
reflect about doing translation as experience-reflection elucidating the challenges in the
elaboration of the project; 3. We analyze the choices that have been outlined in the translation
process of Lilus Kikus from phonetic, lexical and morphosyntactic elements in order to
accommodate the work in the target language and explore its possibilities of (re) creating
similar or analogous meaning effects. Therefore, with this work we intend to give the reader
an analogous experience to the reading of Elena Poniatowska in Mexican Spanish, while we
show how the letter and the meaning of the source text are reflected in our translation in order
to accommodate this foreigne
