Books and codices. Transculturation, language dissemination and education in the works of friar Pedro de Gante
No full textThe present study analyses the work of Flemish Franciscan missionary fray Pedro de Gante (1480-1572) against the background of the early stages of the evangelization in New Spain, modern-day Mexico. By means of his works the Catecismo en Pictogramas [ca.1527], the Doctrina Christiana en Lengua Mexicana [1547] and the Cartilla para enseñar a leer [1569] Gante played a fundamental role in the processes of transculturation playing out between European missionaries and the Nahua populations of the Valley of Mexico. The role of Gante as a transcendental figure of cultural contact has been often neglected; previous studies on the subject have only focused on general aspects of Gante’s biography. A thorough, comparative study of Gante’s works that ingrains them in the wider context of the early years of the evangelization (1524-1572) has never been done before. The present work aims to fill this void. The important role Gante and his works played in the process of transculturation is demonstrated through an interdisciplinary contextual framework that employs agency theory, New Philology, Colonial semiosis and annales theory. This study shows that Gante’s works represent the initial stages of a translation process in which Christian doctrine was converted into Nahuatl. This process was by no means straightforward and involved the translation of an entire set of cultural and cosmological referents from one system of beliefs to another. Gante’s works are at the forefront of this development and this research demonstrates clearly how Gante developed, drawing on his unique cultural and social background, novel evangelical strategies which involved the active participation of both missionaries and the Nahuas themselves. The significance of this, cannot be overlooked, with the translation Gante started an open-dialogue with the Nahuas. Showing that the evangelization of Mexico was not a simple process of imposition, but a complex process in which the different elements of society had a voice and accommodated and negated the influence of the other while constructing new cultural categories

e literatura, com ênfase nas questões sobre o patrimônio cultural urbano, através da
obra de Pedro Nava, autor do gênero memorialístico, conhecido como o “poeta bissexto”,
pertencente ao século XX e integrado ao panorama brasileiro da literatura moderna.
Sob o olhar de Pedro Nava, caminhante atento e escritor minucioso, nós, leitores,
somos levados a percorrer as diferentes escalas e os espaços de memória do autor nas
cidades em que viveu - Juiz de Fora, Belo Horizonte e Rio de Janeiro - através da composição
de um enredo cuidadosamente projetado, considerando a experiência do corpo e
a memória que vem à tona através dos sentidos.
Propiciadora de uma experiência urbana forte e criadora, a leitura sobre as memórias
de Nava faz (re)surgir, através do aporte material e imaterial de nossas lembranças, lugares,
caminhos, cheiros e gostos que compõem os espaços urbanos de nossas “cidades
sensíveis”, onde encontramos o elo entre o passado e o presente.The thesis presented here, entitled ‘urban anatomy’, deals with the significant
interface between architecture and literature, with emphasis on questions about
urban cultural heritage, through the work of Pedro Nava, author of the memorialistic
genre known as the ‘leap-poet’, belonging to Century and integrated into the Brazilian
panorama of modern literature.
Through the urban look of Pedro Nava, an attentive walker and meticulous writer,
one can glimpse the places of memory of the author in the different cities in which he
lived - Juiz de Fora, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, considering the perception,
experimentation of places and The memory that comes through the senses.
Designed by Pedro Nava through his writing process, and projected by our
imagination through reading, it is in the urban space of these sensitive cities that we
find the link between the past and the present. Awakened with material or immaterial
contribution of our patrimonial heritages, (re) appear places, paths, smells, tastes, that

The importance in the papers' impact of the number of pages and of co-authors - an empirical estimation with data from top ranking economic journals
No full textOn a regular basis the scientific output of academic people has to be evaluated, e.g. to decide tenure. A very important item in this evaluation is the published papers’ quality that tends to be approximated by its impact in the literature. As the measure of this impact requires a long-term analysis, thus it is used as its estimator the journal average impact where each paper is published. But some papers have a single author while others have several and some papers have one or two pages while others have more than fifty. In this work I validate the conjecture that these two variables have a significant and positive effect in papers’ future impact, i.e. in papers quality. Nonetheless, I quantify that this two variables jointly considered merely explain 2.8% of papers’ impact variability.Scientific Skill, Co-authorship, Papers’ impact
